What everyone else has said is very true.

One day I was carrying my toddler down some steps to go to the garage. I cannot remember where we were going. I tripped and he ended up falling out of my arms and landing on some concrete at the bottom of the steps.

I picked him up and put him in his car seat. The look on his face was "why'd you do that?" And I swear I was crying harder than he was. I called the pediatrician and they saw him right away. He was fine. I was a wreck. You think that him being the 3rd I would be prepared for anything. Nope, this one has and probably always throw me for a loop.

I have yet to meet a single parent (myself included) who HASN'T had that happen.

Here's an OLD trick for rollers (but not sitting uppers/ crawlers/ climbers). When you want them to stay put; use a dresser drawer. Put that in the middle of the bed/ table/ floor/ what have you.

I still remember how loud the "thump" was when my daughter did that! I was downstairs. Then there was the moment of silence, then the scream. She was fine!

I think they all do this once, because before that, they weren't able to, now they are. And then we know!

Ok this will make you laugh,, and youll feel so much better,, but several years ago, a father was helping his wife make Thanksgiving dinner. He sat their 2 yr old son on the counter to help with some small little thing.. and turned his back for a second,, and the son fell off the counter and broke his arm. Now, that in itself isnt funny, but the fact that this man was our pediatrician...makes all the difference! So, if he can have this little accident,, we all can.

Oh dear God...that won't be the last time! Try to relax. They're kids, and they bounce!

I've honestly lost track of how many times my 3yr old has fallen down the stairs (he insists on jumping), or off of something.

In the last 2 weeks, my 1yr old has tumbled 1/2 way down our stairs, fallen off the bed, and out of her high chair. She cried for a minute, and tried it all over again minutes later.

Once they start moving around, something WILL happen. Watch as best you can and try to keep them out of SERIOUS danger.

It happens and will happen more often. Try not to stress about it. Avoid it when you can but realize that things will happen despite your best efforts.

T., I'm so sorry you're scared and upset. I honestly think it's almost a "right of mommy passage" bc almost everyone I know has had this happen.

It's one of the first things that teaches you that, as a mom:

1. Babies / kids move a LOT faster than you think!

2. You can't prevent every accident, but you learn from most of them how attentive you need to be

3. Kids are fantastically resilient - thank God!

4. When you can't be with baby, better safe than sorry - err on the side of caution in safety situations.

If you're concerned at all about him, please call your pediatrician.

I know how scary that is. Welcome to the club. = /

Aww, I know what you mean. My baby had learned to roll over, okay cool, but she had stayed the night at my follks so I could move into a new apt and get everything ready so she had learned a lot of rolling over that I didn't realize lol. I put her in the middle of a king bed and she rolled onto the floor. I felt bad and like a terrible mom. I was a panicking first mom and went to the ER and was freaking out. You see how many moms have done this. It is scary, it's okay to forgive yourself and not forget. That's good that y'all talked about being more careful and honestly I think it's cute that your hubs got mad but that's coming from someone who doesn't have dad (daughter's dad) in the picture and I take it that he really cares and was scared. It is scary, but you aren't a terrible mom.

Honey,

I think they should have a "baby fell out of bed syndrome". You are not the first and you will not be the last. I remember when that happened to me, I felt so bad, that I couldn't stop crying, but you know what, you cannot blame yourself. Babies will continue to be bouncy and rolling.

Take it as the first lesson he teaches you that he is ready to rock and roll and that the bed will not be his stage anymore.

He will be fine. Just continue to watch him. They some how have built in spring boards that help to cushion their bodies.

Totally what the other mom's said. It happens. Every time I put my son in his car seat, without fail, I bonk his head. I try so hard not to, but it happens. He'll be fine. Next time put him in a bouncy toy or let him roll around your feet. In my bathroom while my son was still around that age, I kept a pillow in the bathroom and lied him on that. He loved it! Or our Boppy. That way he could sit up too.

oh sweetie, please forgive yourself, which i know is easier said than done. someone i used to work with told me that pretty much every kid she knew had fell off the bed or couch or down the stairs by the time they were one year old. my oldest boy fell down our basement stairs when he was about 13 or 14 months old. i was in the bedroom changing my clothes and hubby was with him in teh kitchen. Ian had walked over to the basement door but hubby didnt think anything of it because the door was closed and he had never touched it before. but he had learned how to open the door and he fell down, it is 11 steps, and at the time our basemtn wasnt finished so it was wood steps. my husband saw him roll down the last few steps and i got in there as he was carrying him back up the stairs. my hubby was devastated and was crying hysterically. I looked over Ian entire body, felt all over and squeezed to see if anything hurt, I made him walk around and moved his arms all over to make sure he didnt have anything broke. he was okay, he is 2 1/2 now and my husband still cant think about it. Just know that your little baby wont remember. i use pillows on all the sides of our bed if i leave our 8 month old twins on the bed, which isnt often. about 6 months ago or so our Ian fell off of our bed. he was in there watching mickey mouse, hubby was in the shower and i was vacuuming the living room, poor little guy fell from our king sized bed it was pretty far. i still feel horibble about it, but on the upside now if he is in there to watch his show he stays in the middle of the bed only. he wont even try to get off the bed with our help, he makes us pick him up and set him down. you are not terrible, just another in the line of moms who have babies who fell.

Hi T.,

First, don't be so h*** o* yourself. He's fine. Now you know to be extra careful.

You are not alone. I was nursing my son on the bed, when he was just 3 wks old. I fell asleep and he rolled out of my arms onto the floor. Thankfully, all of the pillows from the bed were there and that's where he landed. However, that didn't stop me from screaming and crying all day long. But with the assurance of my mother and later my husband, I was okay.

I will never forget it, but I have forgiven myself. My son, almost 10, is fine and is a boy's boy with more energy than I can keep up with.

The fact that you care shows that you are not a terrible mom. Your son just moved faster than you thought he could.

Your husband's initial reaction was normal, but it could have happened to anyone, even him. Don't worry and if it happens on your husband's watch, show him the compassion you would have loved to have gotten from him initially.

Have a blessed day.

unfortunately it happens to the best of us. it teaches you to be a bit more aware of things before you walk away leaving a child unattended. If you have an uneasy feeling, follow that feeling, as your probably right. When it doubt, don't do it.

I had my son buckled in his changing pad on top of my queen bed. I walk out of the room thinking hes buckled in. Well my little munchkin got out of that buckle and ended up on the floor. Talk about panic and feeling stupid at the same time. Thankfully my son was okay. Believe i was more bruised due to stupidity then anything else.

Heck I remember playing with my son and swinging him back and forth in my arms and play launching him on the bed into the pillows. My parents did this all the time with him and he loved it. I was pet sitting for my parents one night and did this as a daily night ritual to help make going to bed fun.

Well my son decided to launch his feet off my tummy, causing him to be thrown full force into the pillows (he never pushes off my tummy as he did that night) and slams the side of his face right into the bedroom wall and lands on the pillow just whaling and screaming hysterically.

I was in tears!!!! called the ER room at the hospital to ask advise. They helped me check him over and felt he was okay. But we all make careless mistakes, even ones we really had no control over. Its part of being a parent. Sucks sometimes!!!

Again, take this as a lesson learned. Know for now one, make sure the baby is 99.9% out of harms way before walking off. It takes one stupid chance to loose a child.....protect that child with all you got!

Hugs to you!

Please don't feel bad...I think it happens to everyone. My baby (15 months) fell out of bed this morning, but I keep pillows by the bed so she didn't get hurt. (She sleep with us more than half the night, and the bed rails were more dangerous because she was trying to go head first over them.)

My first daughter fell off my chest while napping on the couch twice. I felt TERRIBLE both times...but she wasn't hurt.

No matter how careful you are, things happen. I think you probably feel more guilty than you should because of your husbands reaction...that happened to me, too. A few months ago my youngest stood up in her toddler bed crying and I guess I was so sound asleep I didn't hear her right away, and she tripped forward and banged her mouth on the end of the bed (wood). She bled, and my husband was SOOO mad at me, but it's not like these things happen because we are being neglectful...accidents happen.

You'll be okay...you probably won't ever forget it, but it doesn't make you a bad mom!

Oh don''t feel bad, it truly does happen to the best of us. My first son fell off a make shift changing table, 3 ft or more off the ground, onto tile floor. I turned around to turn the tub water on and then heard a blood curdling scream and thud. I think the worst part was I didn't see how he fell, didn't know if he landed on his head, bottom tummy or what. The only thing I heard that was good was the screaming. I still took him to the ER because of the hard surface and he turned out perfectly fine--we jokingly tell him he cracked our bathroom floor with that fall (the crack was already there before we moved in, but it makes him feel like he's tough).

All that warning about not leaving the child unattended seemed to wane once he was 6 months of age, but let me tell you after that fall, we always have one hand on a kid on the changing table :) No worries now you know he's a moving and no unattended time on the bed :)

Hi. Things happen. As much as we want to, we can't watch them every single second. & They grow up so fast & learn so quickly...before you know it, he will be running around the whole house, unlocking doors, etc etc etc. Even when we do watch them, things can happen. They can be playing at the park, & they fall.
Prepare yourself because this might not be the last time that your baby falls. Do your best to be cautious, especially if you have him up high (like on a bed). Don't leave him alone, but remember that babies roll over faster than we all realize. I would suggest not putting him up on high places, especially with hard surfaces (like counters) - especially if he could fall on a hard floor.

Anyway, tell your husband to calm down. This will probably not be the last time he falls down. These things help us to learn. (I have 3 older children, ages 23 yrs, 17 yrs, & 16 yrs. They have grown to become wonderful people. They had their share of falls & scrapes from time to time, but they are fine.)

Take care.

Let yourself off the hook. It happens to everyone. If they say it doesn't then they are either
A.) WAY too protective
B.) Lying.

BTW - When my oldest was a baby I was walking through a doorway, holding him (like you would when nursing) and whacked his head on the door jamb. I definitely cried more than he did.

When I'd get up to shower in the mornings before work, she'd roll near me but I wasn't there. She'd roll over all the pillows I had around her. And she'd hit the floor. I'd jump out the shower and run to pick her up. OMG. My heart would be racing a mile a minute. That girl has fallen and hit her head so many times it's ridiculous. Babies learn to turn over at about 5 months. They may surprise you when they roll over the changing table and end up on the floor! That happened to two of my girls with a loud thud. My husband ran in the room. The first time, we were both terrified and worried, the baby hit the head and was crying. The second time (a few years later), the baby hit the shoulder, she did not even cry much! We learned since, so this never happened to our third child.

I trust that you and your husband aren't at odds over this incident. Children can and do fall with no serious damage and it sounds like that is the case with your baby. However, at 7 months of age, you need to remember that he is starting to move around a lot. Putting him anywhere that he might take a fall is not a good idea anymore. I'm not a big fan of playpens, but for times when you need hands free to do a short task, I recommend putting him in one until you finish the task. Other times, when you can be keeping an eye on him, let him play on the floor.

For little babies, some of the best advice I got was: the baby can't fall off the floor.... So, for little babies starting to roll around/crawl, the floor is best. If you don't feel comfortable with that, get a bouncy seat and use the seatbelt for the little babies, or pop the baby in the crib for a few minutes.

When my son was about 6 or 8 months old, I had him on the changing table. I turned partly away from him to reach a diaper, and he rolled off. Thank goodness, I saw it out of the corner of my eye and I was right there next to the table, so I was able to catch him by his shirt, about 3 inches before his head hit the floor. That scare the ____@____.com out of me.
