Anyone Else in Wisconsin Still Waiting on School Open Enrollment Decision?

Well...here it is at the end of May and we still haven't heard whether or not there is room for my son next year at our out-of-district neighborhood school. I emailed the principal in mid-May and she said that letters will be mailed out soon. I have not heard anything since. I'm sure we're not the only ones in this situation, and I wonder how this is going to impact the Wisconsin school districts? If students are denied their first choice, parents won't even BEGIN to apply to other schools or even notify their in-district 'assigned' school until after this letter is received. It seems like it's getting really late in the game for the districts to be swapping students, adjusting class sizes, and hiring teachers. Has anyone else received an out-of-district approve or deny letter yet?

What can I do next?

I work at a school that is heavily open-enrollment based and I know that for us, because of the changes in the open-enrollment window this year, we have had to notify students much later than usual. We still have a large number of students who are not "officially" in the school yet, although we are treating them as if they were. I would contact the school district you are hoping to attend and see if they can give you any more information, but understand that the last-minute change in open-enrollment laws has really made this more difficult for schools to manage in a timely way. I hope you get you choice school!

This page has documents with the info you need: http://dpi.wi.gov/sms/psctoc.html

The acceptance/denial letters are sent out starting by June 8 for non-resident, and June 15 for resident. Parents have until June 29 to notify schools.

As for applying to a 'second choice' school, it is too late. You can apply for up to three schools, but applications are due by April 30. If you're denied and don't win an appeal, your child will go to the school he/she is zoned to attend unless you go a private or homeschool route.

Added: I wanted to say that it may be possible to transfer from one school to another after the new school year begins.

I live in Indianapolis and when we did inter-school transfer requests, we typically didn't find out until well after the registration deadline (in July). We had to register at our 'home school' and then fill out the forms there. We would then get a letter in the mail if we were approved. Basically, the 'home school' counts us in their numbers until they are notified to remove us. Makes it hard to plan, that is for sure!

We went to the school that we did a boundry exception for, to pick up paperwork, so my daughter can plan which classes she wants and they said that letters won't be out until June. I'm sure they rarely turn away kids from other districts. Hang in there mama and give them a little time. I'm sure things are hectic for them, being the end of the year and all the budget cuts. Have a wonderful summer!!
