Antibiotics Haven't Helped

My daughter just turned three, and she has had a small amount of nasal drainage, swollen glands, but mostly bad breath. Her Dr. diagnosed an ear infection, but after 10 days on Omnicef, she still had the bad breath. So. the Dr. prescribed 7 more days of Omnicef. Needless to say, the ear infection is gone, but the drainage, swollen glands and breath are still there. This problem has been going on for two months. Has anyone else had this problem? I really need some info, but don't know where to begin looking. Please help!

So What Happened?

I am taking her in to her Dr. again next week for a referral , then to an ENT specialist. Thank you all so much for the responses and the link websites. Can anyone give me the name of a few good ENT specialists? I will let you all know what happens next. Thanks again for all of your help!

All three of my kids have had to have tubes put in their ears and Dr. Mark Guy at St. Francis Broken Arrow did all three of them. He is excellent!

See if you can take her to an ENT and have then check her out. Her adnoids maybe be enlarge there for creating extra drainage or other sort of problems. If the drainage is going down her throat it could make her breath smell. If the antibiotics aren't working that might be a good course of action to take.

You might want to check with an ear nose and throat specialist. Bad breath can be a sign of tonsils. My daughter had bad breath and started to lose weight she tended to only eat soft foods. We ended up getting her tonsils out in a matter of days. It might be good to take note on what kind of foods she tends to eat more of.

My son is now 2 and we had problems with ear infections not even completely going away. About 3 months ago our Ear Nose and Throat doctor told us to try soy milk. He said this would keep the fluid from building up that causes so much drainage. He has done much better... you may want to give it a try.

L. I know this may sound strange, but you might want to look into chiropractic. There is so much research on pediatric adjusting and how it helps with childhood infections, particularly upper respiratory.
You can check out our website at www.familyfirsthealthcenter.com

Hi, I'm a pharmacist student and mother of 4. This really works for ear infections. Go get some saline nasal spray and a suction bulb used for infants. squirt saline up childs nose twice a day, then suction out congestion- believe it or not colds can lead to ear infect. Then get some iodine, warm it up, put it in child ears, its kind of messy so keep a towel near by. This has kept my baby and 2 year old from having to get tubes. You might also ask dr to give the child a rocephen shot, but I think that just might be for babies

L., my daughter's best friend at preschool had a problem like this for over a year, and finally she saw an ENT. End result, her nasal passages were very narrow, not permitting proper drainage. She had surgery to enlarge the openings, and has been doing very well since then. I'd definitely take her to a specialist, just to rule out anything serious if nothing else. Omnicef is pretty strong not to have knocked an infection out by now! Good luck!

I have no medical background but googled your child's symptoms which led to the following two links that may be helpful.

Best of success as it is always disconcerting when there is something awry and there does not appear to be a good explanation nor cure for what ails your little bundle of love.

I personally had that problem while in college, went to an ENT doctor who said my adenoids were swollen. This sounds gross, but my tonsils had little "craters" in them that food slowly built up in when I swallowed and it hardened and got a terrible odor giving me awful breath. My doc took out my tonsils and adenoids and that was the end of that problem! He said it was fairly common problem and I certainly wasn't alone, although most of my friends looked at me funny when I was asking around if anyone else experienced it! :O)

My daughter had the draining and swollen glands. It turned out to be her adnoids, they took her tonsils and adnoids at 2 and she hasn't had a problem ever since.

Has the Dr. checked to see if possible there is food or an object lodged in her nose or ears? The bad breath, as well as the drainage could be a sign... just a thought.
Good luck.

DOCTORS USE ANTIBIOTICS TOO MUCH! THEN THE CHILD JUST GET IMMUNE TO THEM! YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY TO NOSE/EAR/THROAT DOCTOR. MY SON HAD THE SAME THING THEN IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE HE GOT SO MANY EAR INFECTIONS HE WAS GOING DEAF! SO HE ENDED UP GETTING TUBES IN HIS EARS, HE WAS JUST BARELY OVER A YEAR OLD WHEN HIS SURGERY TOOK PLACE, NOW HE IS 4 AND ONLY HAD 2 EAR INFECTIONS SINCE!

I had the same EXACT problem. My daughter had horrible breath, always had a runny nose, and her throat was always swollen. This went on for about 4 months. Tried the antibiotics and nothing. My husband and I went investigating four ourselves. She had a piece of cottong shoved so far up her nose that it couldn't be seen. It was up in her sinus cavity. You might want to look into that. We laid our daughter down and looked up her nose with a flashlight and saw it. you might want to take yours to the doctor again and see if they can see something up there.

Good luck!!

Hi L.,

I have read the other responces and also have to agree that there must be some to do with the ENT Dr.s. My daughter never had tubes or tincils or adenoids out (with your symptoms described) until my son also experienced the same issues then both children with in 2 weeks of each other had tubes put in and toncils and adenoids out. They are both healthy now. During the healing of the soft tissues their breath was horriffic thankfully it only lasted a few days after the surgery. Hope it helps

if you are willing to drive the distance doctor Richard Leuzler is wonderful and many in his medical group have said that gived the chance to have nasal throat types of surgeries they would choose him his number is ###-###-####

hope it helps S. again

There's a really nasty virus of some sort going around KC right now. I know people from online I've never even met that have had this and people in my home and daycare have it too. My 16 year old is on her second round of omnicef. I'm on augmenten now and it's not even touching whatever this is. My mother has it now and my daycare kids have been passing around some junk that lasts forever.

My 16 year old doesn't have her tonsils. They were out when she was 4. I don't have tonsils either. Mine were out when I was 9. I don't remember if my mother has hers or not.

I don't know from personal experience but from friends with the same issues. One had dental issues, the other was an allergy problem. But I would start with your pediatrician first. Tell him the problem isn't going away and to please run more tests or recommend other options. If you don't have that type of relationship or he just blows it off, I recommend seeing another pediatrician!

Hey L., My daughter and I have been dealing with "sinus infections" for months now and can't seem to kick them. I have requested our doctor to refer us to an allergist, and we hope to figure something out soon. Our symptoms are drainage, swollen glands, bad-breath, coughing, sinus/ear pain and my daughter with fevers reaching 104-106. If you figure anything out let me now. I think the suggestions about adnoids and tonsils are good and you should definitely look into them but they don't work in my case I had them removed when I was young and my daughters tonsils look great.
