Hello! My 22 month old has been "sawing logs" lately- should I be concerned? He just got over a cold about 2 weeks ago with symptoms like coughing, congestion, runny nose, and low-grade fever. I took him to his pediatrician to rule out anything else. His lungs sounded great and his ears looked fine, but he did proceed to put my son on antibiotics because he has a history of getting ear infections soon after getting a cold. He finished up his antibiotics, is active and appears completely healthy, but he STILL has a runny nose (not clear) and is snoring like the dickens. Last week my husband had to take him out of church because he was snoring so loudly! :)

Does this sound abnormal? Any other snoring toddlers out there?! Thanks!

What can I do next?

My son was always sick when he was a baby. Took him to an ENT specialist, did allergy testing. He had 3 sets of tubes in his ears, they removed his adnoids with the 2nd set then his tonsils with the 3rd set. He was SO much better after that and didn't snore. He is 14 now, still has allergies but we now how to control his outbreaks. Will get better for you but, I would suggest and ENT!

Hi there! My son, now 6, snored ever since he was a baby. At first, we thought it was cute, because it was so soft...and we had never heard another newborn snore! Well, it kept up into toddlerhood, and it kept getting progressively louder. Eventually, it turned into 'sawing logs' and was no longer cute. I had asked his pediatrician about it, because he also got ear infections frequently, but she didn't seem too concerned. I thought perhaps the two issues were related. She said some people are just born snorers. Made sense at the time. Well, when he turned 4 1/2, i was driving one day, and heard him snoring in the backseat. I turned around to look, and was surprised to see him wide awake...sitting in his booster seat, snoring! At that point, i took him to a specialist, an ENT. (Ear, nose & throat doctor). He did an evaluation and found that his tonsils and adenoids were so enlarged, that they were restricting his breathing! His adenoids had become so big, they completely blocked his nasal passages. His tonsils were to the point where they were touching each other, almost blocking off his throat. I felt so terrible! Guilty. My son couldn't breathe. I did notice at night, as he slept, his chest heaved up & down very heavily. I realized it was because he was struggling so hard to breathe. He had an adenoid-tonsillectomy, it was an outpatient procedure that took about a half an hour. A few hours after surgery, we were home. I had a brand new boy! No more snoring. He still gets ear infections now, at age 6, but not as frequent. Boys are more prone to them. I have 3 girls as well, and never had to deal with ear infections with them. I suggest you get your little man in to see an ENT. A simple evaluation could be all it takes to help him breathe better! And you don't wnat to let it get to the point where he is snoring while wide awake! Good luck!

Have you had him checked by the pediatrician? It could be his adenoids that need removal.

My youngest snored until our ENT Dr. removed her tonsils when she was 4. She doesnt snore very much now. Maybe you should take your son to an ENT and see what they say.

In march of 2009 we had to have our 3 year old daughters tonsils and adnoids taken out because from the time she was 1 1/2- 2 she snored so horribly and couldnt breath while she was asleep. Come to find out her tonsils, although not infected at the time, were almost touching they were soo big, and her adnoids were also huge. I would have someone look at his tonsils, because they always overlooked my daughters. She is now 4 and a month after the surgery she stopped snoring all together. That was most def. the problem with her. Oh her adnoids being so big were also causing a lot of ear infections. I hope this helps, abd let me know how it goes.

Are his tonsils and/or adenoids swollen? My kid stopped snoring as soon as those were removed.

My kid is snoring too..especially when she's played a lot.. running and jumping are most of the reason why she's tired. Maybe if you hear your baby starting to snore, just move him to other side, change his position while sleeping. And put a pillow for his head so that he easily breath.

Hi Jen,

If his runny nose is yellowish or greenish, then there is still an infection. MOST infections will run there course and antibiotics shouldn't be used (especially a second time) if you can help it. They can break down the immune system as well as cause yeast infections that can go unnoticed.

The snoring probably has to do with the runny nose. If he's still doing it after everything has cleared up you might want to look at other options. Snoring, when seemingly healthy, can be caused by an irritant. I always recommend that young mothers detox their homes to keep their little ones, not only safe, but healthy. If you're interested, let me know and I can give you some info.

God bless,

M.
