Age Appropriate Movies?

Our almost 5-year old wants to see Speed Racer and Kung Fu Panda. It is hard, for me at least, to tell which movies are geared to kids, and which to the kid in adults!! Has anyone seen these movies, and if so, would you take your children? Also, any websites you know of that let you know if the movie really is age appropriate, or just marketed that way? Thank You!

So What Happened?

Thank you for the respones. Nikki is right, you can't really trust another person's opinion as everyone has different ideas of what is appropriate. We will handle this on our own. I do appreciate the links; those will be helpful as it isn't always possible to spend a few hours previewing a movie. Thanks again.

Family Fun has an article about these websites in their June issue. Movie review sites are

commonsensemedia.org
parentpreviews.com
kids-in-mind.com

If you're on the fence about something, go check it out before hand. My husband took my son to see Speed Racer, just turned 6 a couple weeks back. My son said it had some bad words but he didn't hear them, whatever that means. My husband didn't see anything wrong with it. We are all looking forward to Kung Fu Panda.

At the very least, if a movie has something different than your family beliefs, it is a good opening to discuss them with your child. This has lead to some good conversations with our children about certain things. At 5, most things might go right over their head and you won't have to worry.

The advice you got already is great, I just want to tell you a story that you may use.

A young girl wanted to go with friends to see a movie and the parents knew that it was not what they wanted her to see. The girl said there was just a little bad stuff in it and it was mostly good so it wouldn't make any difference. So the mom called her into the kitchen to help bake a cake. As they were baking the mom asked the girl to go outside and get a big spoonful of dirt. The young girl asked why, and the mom told her that it would only be a little bit of bad stuff and it wouldn't make any difference, just like the bad stuff in the movie. The cake would be mostly good, so what would be the harm?? I won't eat it said the girl, and the mom said, that is why you are not going to see this movie.

If it all possible, I try to view the movie first to see if its appropriate. When it's not possible, I use http://www.parentpreviews.com/
They are very clear about describing the movies (and the parts that make them PG or PG13) and its contents so you can make an informed decision.

A.,

Although I haven't read it yet, here is a review for Speed Racer. Also, bookmark this site, it's a great place to find out if a movie is kid friendly or not!

With my oldest child we went thru this same thing. We took the adivce from another family that a movie was family friendly, turns out that we are not like that other family and this was NOT a movie we wanted out child to see. So three kids later, I still preview all movies first if in doubt! YOu know what you want your kids to see better then anyone, so if you are not sure if this movie is going to be okay for your child then you need to go see it first and then make the choice for yourself and your family. Some movies you just KNOW that you and your children are going to love it, the others need to be previewed first, and at this youg age they really dont care about the waiting time to get it on DVD anyway.

I always check http://christiananswers.net/spotlight/
They tend to have a lot of reviews from parents telling if they would let their children watch a movie or not. I don't think it matters if you are a Christian or not to get some great information. One suggestion...don't listen to your kids friends when they say they got to go...doesn't matter. Make sure the moveie is what you think is ok for your kid.
