HI, I am going out with a bunch of my girl friends for the first time since I had my little girl 5 wks ago. I know I will have a few glasses of wine and I am breastfeeding. How do I do this? I know I will probably have to pump while I am out and then again when I get home, but I will dump it. When is it safe to feed her myself agian? The next morning? Any advice would be great! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Something you may want to consider is, of course if it suits your tastes, switch to a good beer with some color. An amber or a dark would be ideal. And limit yourself to one. Beer is made from hops which is excellent in helping to encourage milk producton and with the level of alcohol from one beer you would eliminate the need to pump and dump. And just think, you'll actually be doing yourself some good with the beer.

Now if you're NOT like me and actually have a good supply of pumped milk on hand, then pumping at all unless it's necessary within about 2 hours of drinking that ONE drink isn't really required.

Even if you do decide to have the wine instead of the beer, just remember that just like how your BAC level is affected, one drink for every hour, 2 hours of no pumping or pump and dump is appropriate for each drink. If you can limit yourself to one wine or one beer, you'll be fine.

Have fun. I was never able to do what you're going to attempt with such a young little one. I couldn't make it out the door without them.

Enjoy!

I read @ this on the net when I had my second,(sometimes I just needed to get away) They say alchohol passes through the b-milk very quickly, 60 min. after the end of your drink on an empty stomach or 90 min. on a full one. Mostly, the baby just doesn't like the taste. If little one does happen to get some, their bodies filter it very quickly. I have @ 1 glass of wine before bed 3-4 times a week, just to help me sleep. I wouldn't worry too ____@____.com't waste your "buzz" by sitting there pumping. Just use a already pumped bottle in the middle of the night if your worried. Have fun!! Sounds like you could use a nice break! K---------

When I was breastfeeding my lactation consultant advised me to pump just before I went out, drink no more than 1 drink and to pump and dump twice after doing so. Then I was able to breastfeed again.

One thing to keep in mind is that the alcohol content of your milk is the same as your blood. So even if you drink 3 glasses of wine that are 10% each, over several hours, and your BAC is .10 rendering you unable to drive, your milk is only going to output .10 at that time. A bottle of fruit juice or a banana could have more alcohol than that (not that you're giving a baby that young either of those, anyway!). And it will decrease rapidly after you stop drinking. A good rule of tumb is if you're sober enough to drive, and sober enough to care for your child, you're sober enough to breastfeed.

Make sure you drink plenty of water! :) Most hangovers are caused by dehydration, and that would be even worse when lactating.
