I was wondering if anyone has had an infant with scoilious,my son is 9 month old and sits up fine and is starting to stand up, but for the last few months we noticed that his lower rib bone is the back pertrudes out, i though it was because he was still forming and asymetrical, but when i asked the doctor he said that he thought he spine was curved and now we had to see an orthopedic specialist, has anyone have any experience with this, and is it someting he can outgrow?

What can I do next?

Hello.

I have scoliosis. It is not something that you outgrow. It actually can worsen while you are still growing (until around age 18). I had to wear a back brace for a few years. It doesn't affect me now. You can still participate in all sports/activities that others can. Definitely ask your doctor. I didn't think it showed up so young. I was 8 when it was discovered through an xray I was having for another issue.

I would like to suggest you find an excellent chiropractor. If there is a curvature beginning, they will be able to work on it and move things back into place. if not completely, then pretty darn close to it.

I'm a physical therapist (and also a mom to a great 10 month old boy). I can tell you from my knowledge from school a few things about infantile scoliosis. Most cases resolve on their own, with treatment being observation, sometimes bracing, physical therapy and in rare cases, surgery. Kids who have this are not usually in any pain. It's more common in boys than girls. Your child should definitely be seen by a specialist because sometimes these cases can lead to heart and lung issues (not trying to scare you, just make sure that you go to a doctor to be followed..). We are fortunate to live in a major medical mecca, and great resources are nearby. Definitely call Childrens hospital. Good luck!

Hi! I was just wondering something. Have you noticed any small coffee colored marks (like birth marks) on your son. Maybe in the armpit or groin area. Even on his torso. Your son might just be developing scoilious, however I know of a disorder that can cause it as well as a number of other things. So if you have noticed the marks i have discribed to you it could possibly be that. Please dont be alarmed I have the disorder and have , and continue to live a full productive life. from what I know of scoilious it can be corrected.

Dr. Zimbler at Children's Hospital Boston is wonderful. Don't go to a chiropractor without the ok of a Dr. They can do more harm then good. Good Luck
