8 1/2 Month Old Still Not Crawling - Fort Worth,TX

My 8 1/2 month old is not crawling yet, and while everything I read tells me that I shouldn't be worried...I still am. He sat at 5 months old, but never has been able to roll all the way over either. I am not sure of the two are connected somehow. He sits on the floor and gets so frustrated that he can't move, but when I put him on his stomach he gets mad. He has never been a tummy time kid. Part of me is thinking that he is going to go straight to walking since he loves standing and being in his walker. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to motivate my little guy?

Thanks,
C.

So What Happened?

He started crawling just days before he turned 10 months old.

Don't worry. Mine didn't crawl until 2 days after his 1st birthday. He got frustrated too that he wasn't mobile. He didn't walk until he was 16 months old either. So, he will do it when he's ready. Enjoy the time that he's not mobile; everything is still safe!

Seriously, do not worry about the crawling. All babies are different, and he will crawl or walk when ready. It has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence. My granddaughter's pediatrician said that the number one measure of an infant's intelligence is verbal skills, so just be content to have him in your lap and read to him!

Was he breach? My neice's daughter was breech. Her ped told her that most breech babies never crawl, they just sort of bounce on their butt. They don't know why this is, but it is for some reason.

If not, try more tummy time with toys that he likes. It may help him develop those muscles. Also, keep in mind, some kiddos have their own plan (they don't read the manuals). My husband's nieces didn't crawl until closer to a year (or after). Their peds were not concerned. Milestones are on a bell curve, meaning there's a range of normal behavior.

My first son didn't crawl until 11 months and my youngest is 10 1/2 months and still no signs of crawling. It is really not a big deal. Enjoy it while it lasts.

My son never crawled, he would pull up on furniture to get something or would roll across the floor but he never crawled. Then 2 days before he turned one he walked and never stopped. Then there is my niece who crawled at 6 months on her tip toes and hands (not her knees) then just started walking last week at 11 months. Every kid is different don't worry.

Hi C.,

Babies are amazing and all develop at their own pace, but moms also have powerful intuition - if you think there is a problem call ECI - Early childhood development. They can come and evaluate your child, screen for any "issues", and make great suggestions.

Good luck!

I have read on Mamasouce that many children skip crawling altogether. They just go to walking! My son was a "late" crawler--he hated tummy time too! He only crawled for about 2 months before he decided he'd walk. Any motivation or push he's gotten from us on anything has made him more apt to not do it. To this day he only does things when HE is ready. So, in my opinion, I don't think you should be concerned. However, I know that I would be anyway.

Good luck! And, enjoy the fact that you can walk out of the room and return to find him in the same spot you left him! It won't be long until he'll be all the way across the room or even in another one!! :)

let him do his thing. regardless, he is exploring the world around him and may go straight to walking. my guy only army crawled until after he learned to walk. when he decides he is good and ready to be mobile, he will be. I would accept it, but not encourage it. Dont bring him thing intentionally in his reach, make him at least try and bit by bit he will decide to do it
