7 Year Old - Burns When She Urinates

My 7 year old daughter has been complaining of burning when she urinates. I took her to a doctor(not her pediatrician) about 2 weeks ago. They did a urine test but everything came back normal. She put her on Amoxicillan anyway for 5 days. She is still complaining. I am trying to decide if I need to take her to her pediatrician?

What can I do next?

One of the things that my ped. used to have me do was to add a little white vinegar to the bath water. (about 1/8 c.) As odd as it may sound, vinegar is actually used in feminine products for adult women. Age old remedy. And never, never use any kind of bubble bath or other bath chemicals for little girls.

My daughter gets that from taking bubble baths. Quick fix {given to me by a doctor} in between when it starts and getting her in to see the doctor... I buy a 2 Lt of coke and have her drink the WHOLE thing. Then put her in a warm tub. The acid in the coke helps the infection and the warm water 1-forces her to pee, 2-eases the pain while she going. This has worked on her since she was 3 (now 11). Hope this helps.

Hi J.,

There could be many culprits. I agree with Colleen, it's probably yeast. Candida is rampant in our society today because of all the sugar in our diet, whether it be processed sugar, white potatoes, white flour pastas, etc. You get the idea...what most kids eat these days. And if it is yeast, the amoxicillin has made it worse. Antibiotics CAUSE yeast. (If you HAVE to give an antibiotic, ALWAYS add acidophilus to prevent yeast.) If yeast is in the vaginal canal, then her whole body is eaten up with it. That is the LAST place it shows. Remove the sugar completely and add plain yogurt with active cultures. If you can afford it, Tanalbit is the best solution and it will rid the entire body within 3 months.

My 15 year old had a problem like this and I sat her in a bath of a solution that I can tell you about. It has melaleuca oil in it. Yes, bubble baths are BAD, but this is not that. If you want more info, please let me know.

Regards,

M.

I dont know the age range on this but it could be possible she has a yeast infection or just has some itch that she has scratched to much. As her mother why not take a peep down there and see if u see any visible signs of irritation and ask ur doctor first but some over the counter creams for vaginal itch and burning may also help.

Try no baths at all for a little while - my 9-year-old neice gets this problem now and then and that's what her pediatrician said years ago. My almost 5-year-old now gets this problem occassionally and that's what we do also, which clears it up. Bubble baths are definitely a culprit, but sometimes just soaking in the warm water can be an irritant also (I know, confusing...sometimes warm water helps it feel better and sometimes warm water just perpetuates the problem). Good luck!

Both myself and my daughter have had problems with this same issue. Here are a few things that we have had watch for. Has your daughter used any kind of bubble bath lately? Does she use any of those toddler wipes to clean herself after using the bathroom? Make sure that she is still wiping herself from front to back. Or, have you changed laundry detergent? I hope this helps. Sometimes things that you have been using, like bubbles, can start to cause problems for no reason. Good luck!

You should definitely take her to her pediatrician. Amoxil is not usually strong enough for UTIs, and if she is still burning, there is something wrong.

Yes, please take her to her pediatrician. I had this problem with my daughter and had to switch her soaps and the detergent I washed her clothes in. Also, with my daughter it came from her putting her hands down there which I was told by the doctor it's normal at that age that they are discovering their bodies. Good luck and I hope she feels better.

Does she take bubble baths? If so cut them out. Try switching to a mild, hypo-allergenic soap and be sure she is rinsing good down there. My sis-in-law had to cut out baths completely w/ her girls. They started w/ showers at age 1 1/2 and have not had any problems. Also laundry detergent and fabric softeners are a big culprit. Use fragrance free ones. Be sure she is not holding her pee to long as well.

I would take her in. Until then though.. while she is going to the bathroom dump a little glass of warm water over her private area. It helps nuetralize the urine a little and can help ease the stinging. (an old trick I learned when having urinary track infections)

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. I too am very sensitive down there. The best soap to use is plain Ivory, they now have Ivory w/ aloe which I like better. It will provide fast relief & won't dry her out too much down there that can create friction & chafing. Also, you should try to invest in a shower head or something to put on your faucet that helps with hard water. This too can cause irritation. Do you wash her hair while she's in the bath? If so, her shampoo may be irritating her. Wiping & drying off really good will also help w/ irritation. I hope this helps & good luck.

Yes -- I would take her to the pediatrician..

Also, check a few things -- is she taking a bubble bath.. what soap or body wash is she using in the bath (it may contain ingredients that are irritating her) .. are her underwear all cotton crotch.. check your laundry detergent -- most brands contain harsh chemicals... It may be as simple as switching out a few items. Hope this helps..

I would take her to her pediatrition. I had that same problem with my 7 year old not too long ago. She was also burning when she was going to the bathroom. I took her to the doctor and she didn't have an infection but the doctor did noticed that my 7 year old played with herself alot(I guess discovering herself)and probaly just irritated it. The doctor explained to me that this was normal but to talk to her about it and to make sure she didn't put anything where it was not suppose to go. I hope this helps you.

My six year old complains of this now and then and I've had it checked out a couple of times and it's been negative for infection. I bookmarked this article at one time...

and it pretty much spells out what her pediatrician said. Be sure to click on "prevention and treatment" at the bottom of the page.

Sounds like a mild UTI- see if she will drink Cranberry juice. The Cranberry/raspberry has a sweeter taste and may be more acceptable while still getting the all important cranberry into her system. SW

Hi J., yes, I would take her to the pediatrician, and better yet, to a urologist. I had several UTIs when I was a little girl, so it's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck, and I hope she feels better.

If she's still burning even after taking all the antibiotics, then have your pediatrician refer her to a urologist. They will check her for rashes/itching, fever, blood in the urine, abnormal urine odor, STD, drainage/discharges between urination and more. Urologists can also tell if there's a kidneystone present (she'll have back pain).

Your pediatrician can run some of these tests (they'll definitely do a dipstick) but it depends on your insurance as to whether or not the costs of the test will actually be covered as some of the testing is very specialized.

There's a reason she's burning and a urologist will find it for sure. Some antibiotics won't work at all if there's an allergic situation present. You also might want to cut her back on the sodas and put her on a water and fresh citrus diet (no sugar) to clean out the kidneys. My urologist highly recommended this (I get kidneystones) to prevent kidneystones and to remove calcium deposits all along the kidney area including the bladder. The citrus will help to break the baddies up and move them out of the system quicker.

Hi J.,

Hope your daughter is feeling better now.

If not, I had some thoughts that might be helpful.

I have found that condition is sometimes caused by bubble baths. Just an idea...

Also, cranberry juice is excellent for urinary tract infections. Not sure if a 7 month old could drink it.

If natural solutions don't help, I would suggest taking her to the pediatrician as this can be quite uncomfortable.
