I agree with talking to his Dr. about it. Some medical problems can lead to bad breath. Celiac disease (an intolerance to gluten found in wheat, barley, and rye) is one that is getting more attention lately, but some Dr's still don't take it seriously.

Hi S.,

When it comes to my kids, I don't take any chances. You are asking for advise because you know something is not right....call your pediatrician and get your son checked....you never know...I don't want to scare you, because I don't know you, but I know of horror stories that started out with a little girl having bad breath...it was just the beginning of something no parent ever wants to even think about happening to their children.

In my opinion, better safe than sorry. It will give you peace of mind.

Take care of you and yours,

P.

I would take him to his dentist as well as a pediatrician for a check up. Sometimes GI problems may present with fowl breath. In my dental practice I see a lot of kids, but it is rare that I see one with bad breath. It is probably nothing, but it's best not to chance it.
Best of luck,
I. S.

Sounds like you need to take him to the dentist- he has halitosis.

Make sure he brushes his tongue, as well!

If the bad breath persists, ask your pediatrician about it. Sometimes bad breath can be a symptom of another problem.

I would recommend taking him to the doctor to see if he has an infection that could be causing the bad breath.

Be sure to ask the doctor to take a good look in his nose. When my brother-in-law was little he shoved something up his nose (cereal, I think). Nobody immediately knew about it so it remained there until my mother-in-law noticed his breath began to smell bad. She took him to the doctor who discovered the obstruction while examining him. Bacteria started to grow, causing the smell. If the bad breath is a recent issue, perhaps this is a possiblity.

Have you had a dental check up? If not, please schedule one right away. He should have been going to the dentist from two on. Public schools require that children have a dental check up prior to entry. It could be a dental issue that scrubbing his teeth won't help such as decay. Speak to your dentist about his bad breath. It could be a sinus problem or stomach issues. Either the food he eats or the fact that he isn't eating enough or frequently enough. Your pediatrician could help you with this once you've seen the dentist. Good luck. B. C

Does he have a cold/sinus problems??
I know when my dd's allergies are acting up she has horrible smelling breath.I have her brush atleast 3 times a day and we have tried mouthwash on her(but very little). And she did will with rinsing and spitting.
Maybe contact your child's dentist/doctor and they can help with special toothpaste or something.

Another possibility is that he may have enlarged adenoids. If that is the case, they may have to be removed (which I hear is not a big deal). When you see your pediatrician, ask him/her to check his adenoids. If it's a possible issue, your son will probably get an x-ray & a consult to an ENT doctor.

I agree with Jenn..he may have a sinus issue going on. Without fail, when my daughter starts getting bad breath, it is a matter of less than a week that she has a major cold or sinus problem. I have also heard that bad breath can be a sign of strep throat. Regardless, it warrants a call to the doctor.
Good luck!

I definitely agree with the other girls. A visit to the doctor is a good idea. If there is no medical problem though, don't forget to teach him to brush his tongue when he brushes his teeth. Not brushing the tongue is a major cause for bad breath.

could be a rotting tooth or acid reflux, that's the only two things I know for bad breath.

You may want to check with your doctor about this. That can be the sign of illness. Better safe then sorry. It seems that if he brushes, his breath should be ok.
If is is not his health, then you could get him some mints or breath freshener, or something like that. I don't know what your school will allow him to have though.

Just curious how long it has been since he has had this problem. A friend of mine's child had this problem and it turns out that he stuck a rolled up chewing gum wrapper up his nose and it has decaying and causing the bad breath. You might want to have his nose looked at too. Little boys do weird things. This probibly isn't your problem but it never hurts to double check.
