Hey Gals! So my 4 year old son has his yearly cold, and its bad. Recently, he had his 4 year shots and for the first time the dreaded flu shot. Almost 2 weeks later he is super sick. He has been running a horrible fever, along with this horrible cough that makes him gag so bad that he throws up whatever he eats. I took him to the doctor and they gave him antibiotics. I am a working mother, and I cant really miss work, and I have no one to watch him while he is ill. I need some home remedies to help with a cough, and I dont want to give him cough medicine obviously. What else do you ladies do at home that gives fast relief for our little ones?

Try a cool mist humidifier and elevate his head when he sleeps. You also alternate tylenol and motrin (talk to the pharmacist or doctor about dosage). Try giving him teaspoons of honey for the cough. That should be soothing for him.

I know that work can be tough to miss, but hopefully they understand that your first priority is your little one.

I just read the last two posts and wanted clearify some of the stuff that was said. Do NOT put vicks under your childs nose, look at the directions and it will tell you that it may cause breathing problems. Also they do NOT use mercury any more so there is no reason to be alarmed but it is always a good idea to resurch the pros and cons of immunizations and make your own informed decision about how and if you you want to do them.

For your doctor to give your son the flu shot along with the other shots should be a crime. The amount of mercury and inflammation causing ingredients have probably damaged his immune system (I hope not causing too much in problems) and it is unable to work properly. Please be using Motrin or some other children's remedies instead of Tylenol as that will put the immune system into further disarray.

If this were my child I would get Vitamin D3 and give him up to 5,000 mg a day along with Vitamin C, Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamin E and Selenium. Go to Henrys, Sprouts, or Whole Foods and talk with the person in the supplement/nutrition area and ask for recommendations.

The flu shot does not work for 99% of the population. For more information on this, go to:
www.russellblaylockmd.com (Swine Flu Data section)
www.mercola.com
www.naturalnews.com

AND please get some probiotics for your son asap. He has a double whammy going on with the shots and the antibitics and probably shouldn't have even been put on them as they don't work for viruses.

Sorry you are going through this. I feel for you and your son. I've been there and I've seen the damage. Vitamin D3 is the most important thing we all should be doing during the winter and when sick.

The number one thing he needs to get better is REST! Camp him out on the couch in his jammies under a snuggly blanket and keep him very hydrated because of the fever.

Honey for the cough, garlic and soup for overall well being and rest, rest, rest.

if he is able, gargling with warm salt water is good... prevents colds from hitting or getting worse. But have to do it several times a day.

For his cough though, you gotta make sure, it does not get worse... or that it is not Bronchitis or Pneumonia, Pertussis etc.
Coughs can originate from post-nasal drip, or the chest....

My kids have never ever gotten "sick" from any shots nor the Flu vaccination. They get the nasal mist for that.
Vaccinations, per the Flu, it takes about 2+ weeks for the body to even build up immunity to it. So, in the meantime, a child/person can get sick with other ailments... since germs takes a few days to incubate in the body, to then become... a sickness in the body and symptoms actually appears, outwardly.

Keep an eye on his fever... it can reflect the cold/illness itself... or a secondary infection, for example.

KEEP him hydrated, since he is throwing up. Just little amounts of fluid... periodically. When sick like that, the body cannot take in fluids, all at one time.... dehydration can occur if he is not hydrated...

Illnesses like this takes time to run its course. BUT, if he develops worse symptoms/new symptoms/worsening symptoms/worsening fever... take him to the ER or Doctor again.....

Did they say what he has????

Cough medicines... will only serve to (1) suppress the cough or (2) help the mucous to come out. It does not 'cure' the cough. Just ease, discomfort and symptoms.

I also heard that putting VIcks on the soles of the feet, then wearing socks, helps coughs. I don't know...

Who watches him now? Since you work? Even when not sick, who watches him??? Or does he go to school?
He can't attend anything being in the condition he is in... and since he has a fever. Maybe try calling your local hospital.... in my State for example, a hospital used to have a "sick" daycare for children... who are sick....

Sleep... also helps the body heal. Sleep is restorative and helps the body to fight off things.

all the best,
Susan

Triaminic Cold and Cough works well for my kids. its the purple one for nighttime that we use so they can rest. 1/2 dose of what is recommended for the youngest age on the bottle (i think its 6 years old). I have a 3 and 4 year old and it does wonders for their cough. The honey and humidifier are great ideas also.

he has to work through it, there is no quick fix, but you can try cutting out dairy completely. This may help him to not have so much mucous. Also, try finding an herbalist or naturopath where you live. They have some great non-drug remedies that will help your little guy through this.

My 3 yr old and I have had that cold too and the cough is horrible. We tried chestal with her (whole foods cough syrup) and it helped. My MD said no cough syrup under age 4 so maybe you have children's OTC options for your little one.
My MD also said the vicks run on feet then socks too but we haven't tried that.
Good luck!

Avoid the flu shot or the mist next year. There are much better ways to avoid getting sick than those toxins. Chiropractic adjustments will help tremendously. Your son is not too young. I got off all asthma meds by going on a regular basis. When the neck is out of alignment, the sinuses do not drain properly. That starts a chain reaction off. It is amazing how quickly it can help heal respiratory illnesses. Steam will help. Vicks is petroleum based and should never be used on the skin. Use essential oils. I love oil of oregano. It is very strong and needs to be diluted into a carrier oil such as jojoba or olive oil. Apply this to the bottom of his feet. You can also put it on his chest. you can get it in capsule form and take internally also. It is a food stuff so you don't need to worry about taking too much and it works better than antibiotics due to its antiviral properties.

Massaging the bottom of his feet will also help immensely. You can get a book on reflexology or just look on line. The pad under the toes reflexes-sends healing energy- to the chest. There is a reason foot massage feels so good. It is a full body massage including the organs. Apply light even pressure with the side of your thumb. This will help with the cough. It may appear to make it worse initially, but it is just loosening things up.

Get Queen Helene's Mud Masque. Here's a link to show you what to look for, you can get it at any drug store. Apply a nice thick layer on his chest and sinuses. It will break up the mucus. Leave it on until it dries and falls off on its own. It can be a bit messy, but boy is it great! The major ingredient is kaoline clay and it has tremendous drawing power. It is great to have on hand and can be used to draw out slivers and toxins from insect bites. You can also just get kaolin from a ceramic supply store.

Make sure you give him a probiotic to counteract the antibiotics. No sugar, no dairy, no eggs. Nothing drags down your immune system like sugar and keep in mind that juice is loaded with sugar. A small glass of oj is ok, but no more. Herbal teas are a better choice.

I use baby vicks rub on her feet and put socks on her. she seems to rest better within 20 minutes. My friend's have tried and said it failed but it seems to work for me everytime. (as recent as last night) I rub the excess on her chest and a swipe under her little nose.

good luck it sounds tiring and stressful...
