So What Happened?

Everything went great! Thanks for everyone's feedback. The worst part was when he came out of the recovery room. He was pale and totally out of it. But, it has gotten a lot better! Thanks everyone!!

M.,
My son had this surgery at14 mos. Truly, the most difficult part was keeping myself calm and trusting that all would go well. I stayed calm for my son and with the support of my husband. It went fine. I also took the nurse's advice and told my son goodbye in the "holding rooom" while my husband walked him the next few feet to the door and handed him off to the o/r nurse. This made for an easier transition for him and he was fine leaving with teddy bear in hand. Once home, he mostly just slept and we applied ointment until bandage fell off. Pretty easy all and all, considering. Also, our one and only surgical experience thus far (he's 2 now). PS, it helped me feel better talking to the anesthesiologist pre-op.

My son had it done when he was about 18 months old. The doctor didn't want him to have it done until he was older...

Anyway, my son had a catheter in place for a week to help the repair take hold. we had to use a double diaper method during that time. We cut the regular size diaper and then resealed it with medical tape (it was soft) so the catheter could still work and not crush the penis. The outer diaper was a larger size and went over the altered diaper.

My son did just fine and played as normal until the cath was out. The hardest parts were immediately after surgery, changing the diaper (keeping the ointment on and all that), and the the removal of the cath (ick!!!).

Everything is normal now and we've had no problems! That was 6 yeats ago, too!

GOOD luck!

Hi M.,
My son had this done. He was about 1 years old, if you can beleive it I didn't discover it until then. Thankfully it went well and it was pretty smooth. He was circumcized at the same time so recoop was not soo bad. It depends on degree of hypospadia too.

I will keep you in my prayers cause I know any surgery is stressful and even more so this kind.

My guy was 12 mo. old when they did it. They didn't want to do it sooner b/c of the anesthesia. I guess they want them to be at least a year old if they can help it.

Anyhoo... the hardest part is putting the ointment and keeping it clean. If your little man is like mine, he'll hardly even notice. Anesthesia does lead to constipation. Make sure to talk to your doc about what you can do if that happens. Your guy is most likely not on solids yet, so blueberries are out. Perhaps flax oil? Talk to your doc. Best of luck mama. It's not as bad as you think. :)

My son had this surgery at 3 months of age and he did fine . They did it at Cooks downtown,
We took him in and he had a GREAT male OR nurse that prepared him and us . They gave him a little shirt and a vanilla flavored paci . They weighed him told us it would take 90 mins I think . They call you half way thru in the waiting room . (this was a year ago)

We left him with the nurse and went to a huge waiting room full of other parents . He was done quickly and the dr came to talk to us and then we went to the recovery area . That was the worst part . Made me want to cry for the poor baby . He was really pale and not very responsive but it got better and as soon as he took a whole bottle we went home .
with pain relief ointment . He was fine after a couple days .
Good Luck !!!
