I have a 28 month old who was not talking but speaks ,knows lots of nursery rhymes.he can read picture books on his own, knows animals and sounds, colours etc
When he is hungry or needs something he will try to help himself rather then asking or talking abt it.
Also he never responds when we call his name.
We put him in daycrea for half day 2 months back .There also he never responds when his teacher calls him by name.If we have to call him we just say we are going to put Barney on he will come running.
I am getting little worried.Should we talk to his doc abt evaluation or speech therapy.

What can I do next?

Have them come out to do a comprehensive evaluation. Sometimes what we think are strengths may not be and vice versa. Since you have concerns, they will come out and tell you if they are legitimate or not. Then you can stop worrying if he has a problem or not. Does he engage you? Does he tell you thinks he is excited about or respond appropriately to questions? Do you say his name all the time or not really? When you tell him about something you like, does he act interested? If only for a moment?

I would mention this to the Pediatrician, my nephew was diagnosed with a speech delay at 2 years. He did a year of Early Intervention and then went to the Special needs Preschool in his town. He has other issues along with the delay, so get him checked out. The earlier you get help the better for him.Good Luck! And as a teacher I would highly suggest to get whatever services you can gfet for him do so.

Obviously speech is not a problem but communication is. I noticed the same with my dd right before her 1st birthday. She did not respond to her name and when she can, started doing for herself as well. She also had a flat affect and rarely react to people around her. If any other kid took a toy she was playing with...she simply move on to the next toy. She also took to animal books and shapes and colors.

Have your child evaluated by a neurologist. My dd is dxd autistic and has been in therapy since 17 mos. I am hoping that your child isn't but if he/she is early intervention is the key. It has done wonders for our little girl. She is now 4 and although she continues to have her traits she has made made progress in leaps and bounds.

Two things. Call your nearest childrens hospital, and get an appointiment with a Developmental Pediatrican. This will take many months, but is what you need. For now, get an appointment with a speech therapist and work on what you can until that appointment comes.

Call ECI in your state. They will come out and evaluate, and will most likely provide services, but you should not depend on these to be fully diagnositic nor everything your son needs. The state provides serivices to children so that they are funcitonal, you want more. Once your son is three, the responsiblity for public serivices moves to your school district. Make arriangements for that move prior to his third birthday (contact them three months ahead of time) so that there is no break in services.

Speak to the pediatrician if you need referals. A trip to the audiologist is also in order, and can be done prior to a developmental evaluation.

I'm not a doctor and i don't have experience with that sort of issue but it sounds like you need to talk to the doctor to get your kid be checked for development and hearing as well just to be on the safe side.
all the best.

Dear Shirpa, Have you had his hearing checked? He sounds like he is very smart , he may just need a little help. Yes you should see the doctor and have him examined. Grandma Mary

S. - Do look into Early Intervention Programs in your area. They can do some testing and confirm/rule out any concerns.
One of my friends son who was born as a preemie benefited from it tremendously. They can run testing very early on and the quicker you rule out things and get an accurate diagnosis the better. My friend's son is 3 years old now and seems to be doing quite well.
Good Luck to you!

get his hearing tested. my 2 1/2 yr old is the same way but alittle behind yours and was diagnosed hard of hearing. he only responds to you talking to him if you are infront of him but not behind him. he can hear his dad and one brother but not me and another brother. he ony responds to me if he is sitting on my lap. mine doesnt respond to certain people who call his name he also cant follow directions which is due to he cant hear them. he tries to comply but cant if you tell him bring me the ball he will go to the area of the ball and look around like what am I supposed ot do now??

mine also cant say drink. mama, or things he hears everyday. i tell him drink everytime I fix him a drink and he still doesnt say it. good luck but the sooner you test him the sooner you put your mind at ease or deal with it whichever is necessary.

Absolutely. Obviously he does not have an issue hearing. I think speech
therapy would be a tremendous help. Does he interact with the other
children. With you? Talk to your pediatrician as soon as possible. Good
luck.

If you are thinking about doing an evaluation, you won't feel better until you do it.

He is still young and I don't really see that there is a problem, but I am not a professional. It's great that he knows nursery rhymes, picture words, colors, animals, and everything else you talked about. I know that usually young children will respond to their names, but many time my little one ignores us (she learned it from her father...haha) If you yell cookies she will look up, it's adorable.
