21 Month Old with Croupe That Wont Take Dissolvable Pills

My daughter has croupe and got a steriod shot in her leg this past Saturday. The doctor sent me home with 2 oral pills to give her on Tuesday. The pills dissolve in your mouth and taste like grape. My problem is my 21 month old daughter will not take the dissolvable tylenol pills that taste like grape, so she more than likely wont take these pills. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get her to take these pills? And how long is she going to have this bad sounding cough? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I am a nurse and deal with adults who won't take pills, or can't, on a regular basis. What we do for the adults who just don't want to (not adults with reason, but adults with dementia), is we put them in applesauce, sherbert, or ice cream. Dissolving them in large amounts of liquid would work if you knew she would coooperate and drink it all, otherwise you will not know how much she actually got. Best of luck and I hope that she gets to feeling better soon.

I am really suprised that the doctor gave pills to such a young child! I know they are dissolvable, but even getting them to take those is a pain at that age! My daughter has always loved taking medicine for some reason (hey- I'm not complaining) but I haven't tried pills yet- we still do liquid tylenol and stuff because she's only 2. But anyway- that's neither here nor there since he's already given you the pills to give to her...

Does she like appplesauce? You could grind them up in the applesauce but you have to make sure the doctor says it's ok (you never know what can affect the effectiveness of medicine) and you have to make sure she eats it all. Or you could dissolve it in some juice?

Hi, here is a little information on croup.
http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_vir...

Make sure you have a humidifier in her room when she's sleeping or playing. It really helped us out! We have the same problem with pills and flavors. Ask your doc if you can dissolve the pill in liquid without losing the effectiveness. We were able to do that with medication that my daughter had to take. We dissolved the pill in a tiny bit of hot water (just enough to melt it) and poured it into her milk or juice. I hope your little one feels better soon.

I suggest crush it up and put in in a small amount of juice in her sippy cup. this way she will get most of the medication into her body...hope this works!

My son had croupe when he was just over a year old and actually, he had it twice within 4 months. We didn't have to give him any pills or dissolving pills, but we had liquid to give him. However, now he has to take Claritan every day and it's dissolvable and he doesn't like to take it either. I have found if I bribe him with something (like a cookie or something they really like) he will take it for me. I will even tell him that if he wants to go bye-bye, he has to take his medicine. He is very good at taking it when you put it this way. (BTW, he is 22 months old) My doctor told me as long as you can get it in their mouth, it will go away fast. You may have to just hold him/her down and force it in their mouth. I had to do this with my son before the bribes worked. Good luck and I hope it goes well for you. Oh, the cough should go away in about a week to two weeks. Sounds horrible, but it will go away.

That's weird, my 2 year old daughter got croupe when she was about a year old and the doctor never gave her anything! (Navel Hospital) Just told us to use a humidifier and prop her matress up. I remember the best thing we did was give a nice warm bath with the Johnson's vapor bath twice a day. I think it lasted about 4 or 5 days. Good luck!

I have a six year old daughter and she was just diagnosed with the same thing on Sunday night. The doctor didn't give me pills though but liquid instead which is also grape. Maybe you can try dissolving the pills in little water and see if she will drink it that way.

Hope it works out.

Hi,

My two younger children have had croupe quite a bit. My doctor always gives me liquid medication and I always put it in their drink, because they do not take medication well. Try asking your doctor to give you liquid medication instead. When my kids would get a croupe attack, I would go into the bathroom and steam up the bath and just sit there until they start calming down. You can try an air ionizer in her room as well. Vaporizers don't work when they have croupe. Hope this helps somewhat.
