I wrote in a previous question yesterday about my 20 month old. She is running temps now of 99 and is a little cranky and appetite not so hot. I took her to pediatrician on Monday. She said ear with ear infection 3 weeks ago still has fluid but not infected. My question is when they have fluid left over on the ear from previous infection and they get ANOTHER cold are they at risk for the infection coming back because of MORE fluid? I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is YES. I'm concerned about being around other kids because i am afraid of her getting another cold! We have birthday parties to go to this weekend, etc. and I am nervous about her attending. We live in a new york city apartment and we are getting cabin fever! BUT, i am reluctant to take her to our playroom , her classes, playdates because i am concerned about ther getting another cold! ANOTHER Ques: when the pediatrician says she should not be around other kids 24 HOURS after having a fever ( i know this is to protect THEM) does that mean fevers 101 or greater OR any fever being she has been running 99. thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Well, I can answer one of your questions which is that doctors don't consider 99 to be a fever whatsoever. 99 could happen simply from your daughter being hot.

Hey Kate,

I did not see your previous post but wanted to let you know that any fluid drainage from an ear is an infection. My son (8) has had ear problems his entire life (3 surgeries, lost hearing twice, ruptured ear drums twice). He was the kid that was never "sick" with a cold but always had ear infections. So I think his ears are where the "colds" took hold. I would make sure your daughter is 100% before taking her back to a community playroom - but playdates at your home sound reasonable. Concerning your birthday party this weekend - if it's family gathering - by all means go. Otherwise I would play it safe and just veg at home until she's back to feeling normal.

I've wondered the same thing. After the antibiotic is finished I prefer to go back to the doctor but they don't suggest that. I made a post about play groups, etc. not sterilizing their toys etc. and the board chewed me out (as usual LOL). But the reality is whenever I don't send her to play groups she is healthy, when we go back a couple days later she's showing cold symptoms. So I'd rather not go to unstructured centers that don't have a sterilization policy. 99 is not a fever but I'd still monitor it as thought it were.

Pay attention to her behavior where her ear is concerned that's how I am able to pick up on my daughter's symptoms. She has sinus issues that I have.

yes your risking the infection coming back. you need to get the fluid delt with. it will affect her hearing. she is more at risk from the cold wind or water getting in her ears than exposure to other kids. make her constantly wear a hood. like it or not no exceptions. in my opinion the fever would have to be over 101 kids run fevers due to teething ear infections etc. just because she has a fever doesnt mean she is contagious. especially if she still has ear issues please gether to an ent speech therapy sucks and her not responding to you cause of ear infections suck. if you dont do this early this is what you will get into. avoid it at all costs. err on the side of caution better to intervene than not. i have had 2 kids go through this and i am speaking from experience. the fluid will effect her speech she is hearing like she is under water.
