I heard that if you put a drop of vinegar or hot sauce on the kids tongue they will quit saying those types of words. I havent tried this yet, i want other moms opinions on it.. and today my sons step-mom ( who I cant really trust) said someone that works with defacs said you could have your child taken away by doing that.. its only a little vinegar or hot sauce and i'm saying just a drop; just enough for them to taste it..has anyone tried this? time-outs dont work with my son, neither does talking to him about it..so rule out both of those with your responses please... i know what works and doesnt work for my son and neither of those work for him, i havent found anything that works for him yet, need suggestions please

So What Happened?

Thanks for al the advice given. If I decide to use this method of punishment ( hot sauce or vinegar) prob vinegar will be used cause it will only taste nasty and not burn his tongue, but if I decide to use this I WILL NOT let anyone know about it especially his step mom, or his dad, it will just be between me and my son and maybe my family.. although my mom is against it.. but she baby's him alot! So far so good no bad words today, but it is only a matter of time before my son says something he isnt suppose to..thanks again everybody!

We use to use lemon juice in a little squirt bottle for my aunt's little ones when the bad words would slip out, or when bitting happened. I couldn't tell you about legalities but I know she had foster care kids under her roof at the same time... Good luck with this! Jess

Tiffany,
You did not mention where your son learned this language...That's very important. First, you need to monitor who he is around and protect him from hearing or seeing anything that is harmful to him. This will prevent him from using profanit (if he doesn't hear it). Remember children learn from what they see and hear not not what you tell them to do. You are your child's first teacher. You must model the behavior you want displayed.
I hope I helped. I could not comment on disipline without first dealing with the cause of the problem. Try this I beleive you will get better results than using the methods your currently using. Solve the cause of the problem and you won't have the problem

I say I like this idea, if I ever have to use it, I will give it a try myself :) I can't imagine you should have anything to worry with it getting you in trouble unless the step mom is thinking about trying to get you in trouble, if so she might say or do anything to make that happen.

Have you tried timeouts or anything else? What do your parents say about this? When does he say them...anger or just thinks it's funny?

My son now responds to being sent to his room - since he is very social at age 5. BUT prior to that being effective, we have a paddle - like the ones teachers USED to be able to use. We started spanking our child betw age 1 and 2. Not very hard - but enough to get his attention. All kids are different - my 2 year old is reduced to tears by a verbal scolding!! Best thing is to not have any "bad" language in your home. Your child should not be exposed to people or any tv shows that use bad language. When I occasionally mess up and say one- I immediately apologize to my son and tell him I was WRONG to say the ugly word and I ask him to forgive me. I want him to understand that we all make mistakes but it still isn't acceptable. I also try to be calm and matter-of-fact about it. the more they know they are getting a rise of out of mom - the more fun it is to them. good luck. L.:-)

Tiffany,

The best way to rid this behavior is using positive praise. The other methods have not worked because he is conditioned ( numb) to those methods of punishment. First you must get to the source of where he is picking up this bad habit, It can be handled that way. Most likely it is another person, music or television. Carry around a book of stickers, for example your sons favorite character. When you don't her him say a bad word, give him a sticker, and verbalize how proud you are of him." Mommy's happy when you don't say bad words, that's why I'm giving you a sticker. If you consistently give him praise throughout the day, probably no more then 3 stickers a day, he will understand the meaning behind your praise. This can be used with potty training, instead of stickers, put a chart on the wall and reward with stars/happy face. Sometimes you have too praise one behavior, to get rid of an behavior. I truly believe this will help you. Caution: Do not over emphasize the reward, he will forget the importance of why he is receiving a reward. I hope this will work for you.

Sincerely
Mrs. Thomas

I havent gone through this yet but I am sure I will. The only thing I can tell you is 2 yr olds repeat everything. So make sure no one says those words around him. Another thing is it sounds like your son has a split family. he also may be trying to get more attention. He probably doesnt know how to deal with two different houses yet. My ex husband and I split before my son was a year. We have worked together from the begining for the most part and our son hasnt acted out to badly.

I think there is a lot of stuff that people say DFACS will take your kids away for, but they are wrong. I mean, if DFACS took kids away for stuff like that, why are there kids out there that are abused and beat to death? I don't think a little vinegar or hot sauce would hurt your son, but I don't know if it will help either. Most kids continue this kind of behavior because they know it will get a response. If you just don't react when he says the words, he will probably stop sooner than if you put hot sauce on his tongue. And he is at an age where he will repeat anything he hears, and he is experimenting with different words, so if he gets a reaction out of you about these words, he will say them just to get the reaction.

By the way, we put hot sauce on my now 17-year-old daughter's thumb because someone had told us that would make her stop sucking it. No luck, she loved the taste of the hot sauce. So she tells me that she still sometimes sucks her thumb if she is really upset or if there is a thunderstorm at night. I can't understand why, but I guess it won't hurt her.

I believe 2 years old is too young for such treatment. Worse case, your son may even start distrusting you. I have a "vey active" 2 year old boy as well, and the only thing I've seen calm him down and make him do other things is distracting him, or even sitting down with him and just singing to him, reading to him, or showing a little extra love.

I agree with the other mom who said he is just repeating words he is hearing around him- start with the source and make that exposure stop, then you will hear him repeating better words.

how about you call your local DFCS and ask someone there if you can use this method if you are afraid of something happening. But this is the method some of my friends have used in the past I really never had to use it but knock on wood there is one more coming up in the ranks... if they say nothing is wrong with it then use it.
