2 Year Old Being Put Under

My daughter will have to be put under on Wednesday. This will be her first time and I am quite nervous. She will have to be cleaned out and have a rectal biopsy and then a colonoscopy (I posted awhile ago about her "poop" issues) Has anyone else had this done? What should I expect before and after the anastetic(sp)? Any responses would be great. I know this has to be done, but I hate the thought of my daughter being put to sleep. She will be 2 on Friday

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the great advice. Emilys procedure was yesterday. She was really cranky beforehand, because she wanted something to drink. Her procedure wasn't until 2 so that was a long time to go without being able to eat or drink. Anyways she quite upset when they put her under but she woke up fine. Tired, but hey, thats to be expected right? The procedure itseld went well also. She had some problems with bleeding from the bioposy and they had to call in a suregon to stitch her up but she is fine now. hopefully we will get the results on the 27th at her next appointment.

My son had to be re-circumcised. The doctor bragged that he could do it in less than 30 seconds but he screwed it up! Anyway, this led to an 18-month old going under. I also had a son get ear tubes and the same one have an umbilical cord hernia fixed. What hurts the most is being with them when they get the "funny" medicine and then handing them over to someone else who carries him away to get put under. Nothing is going to take your mind off what is going on but having someone there to talk to helps the time pass faster.

Our 15 month old daughter just had surgery a couple weeks ago for ear tubes. The nurse carried her out of the pre-op room and carried her back in 20 minutes later. She was awake and alert and quite happy... other than being hungry (no food for 10 hours). No drugs ahead of time... she carried her blankie and had her pacifier. No shots, no IVs, no needles of any type - just the mask. They said she might be cranky for awhile afterward but she wasn't. No crying, not even a whimper. It was all very fast and very easy. I'm not sure what the big deal is... I wasn't really worried about the surgery... these docs do it all the time and the end result is that my little girl was happy (and sleeping!) again. Your kids take their cues from you. If you are nervous, they will be, too. Be upbeat and treat it like it's no big deal and they'll do the same.

My daughter has been put under anesthesia 2 times and my son already once!!! I think it is really worse the younger they are!!! My daughter was under at 8 months and again at 17 months. It is so h*** o* the mother when they go to take them!!!! It seems like forever that they are back there but it is not as long a it feels. At the 8 months age she was so out of it. They actually carried her to the waiting room door to get me because she was so thrashing everywhere and screaming!!! It was so horrible that I wanted to cry and I was by myself!!! It was like she couldn't use her muscles and hold herself up......like a bunch of dead weight!!! So Crazy!!!! Then when she was 17 months old it was a little better....but they tend to be very fussy after the wake. The Dr's will tell you-"yeah they'll be fussy"-But that doesn't even explain it!!!! They usually will let them drink liquids after they wake which they seem to be really thirsty. I know both times with her they let her have apple juice or pedialyte. My choice!! So I chose apple juice. Now my son was 2 months old when he was put under and when he woke out of recovery they started wheeling him down the hall to the pediatric floor for admission and I heard him before they even came out the door. I said there's my baby!!! And I was right!!! Then like I said they usually are so hungry and thirsty where they wouldn't let them have anything before. My son was breastfed and as soon as he got to the room I tried to nurse him.....but he was so mad that it was a chore to get him to....then finally he would calm down then not.....anyway he ended up throwing all that he just ate right back up on me!!!! Covering ME!!!!

So anyway be prepared for: 1. Very Fussy!!! 2. Very Thirsty!!! 3. Could Vommit 4. Just give lots of cuddles and love!!! Then they will sleep for a while after all of that and will sleep most of it off....they be almost normal again!!! It took about a 2-3 hour nap and she was just fine!!! Which they can't eat a big diet that day either, in case of making them sick!!! Hope this helps!!! Take a Bottle or Sippy....which ever you use for the drink...the cups they are used to...ALSO TAKE A FAVORITE STUFFED ANIMAL OR BLANKIE!!!! They actually let them go with them the whole way and not to be so afraid!!!!

My son, who was 2 1/2 at the time, had to be put under for some dental work. It was scary for the both of us, I have to admit, but overall the procedure went well. The only thing that didn't go to great was the drug they gave him before he went down. It was given to him to help him "relax" when he woke up. Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect. He woke up extremely upset and just really wasn't himself. It took quite a while to get him to calm down. Eight months later he had to be put down again for his tonsils to be removed - this time without the relaxing drug. Everything went beautifully. He woke up fussing just a bit but nothing out of the ordinary. Once I got to him he was fine. This may be something you want to ask the doctor about before the procedure. Good LUCK!

My son was put under at 13 months to correct a hernia. They also suggested that we bring a toy/blanket or something familiar to make him more comfortable.

They first gave him a dose of a 'relaxer'. This made him very happy and relaxed. The doctore then took him from me, and moved him in to the OR where they actually put him under. It was a long hour, but once he started crying in the recovery room I got to go back. He was still very sleepy, but was awake. Daddy and I stayed with him there at the hospital for several hours until he could dirty a diaper.

Post surgery he did great. He was very sleepy the remainder of the day, but by the next day he was up and ready to go.

My daughter had general anesthesia, but for plugged ducts. she was about a year old. and did great. They did suggest that if she had a doll or something security-wise to let her hold that, since you're usually not allowed in the room. she was a little groggy for about 1/2 a day. And wanted to cuddle a lot afterward, but that was it.

My son was put under to have a re-circumcision when he was 16 months. Trust me that it is going to be a lot harder on you then on her. Right afterwards she will probably be really really scared and just confused. My son was panicked until he saw me and then I was able to calm him down right away. My big suggestion to you is to ask if you can be in the room when she is still waking up instead of waiting until she is fully awake to come get you. TRUST ME is will be a hell of a lot easier on you and her if you are there right away and she is not waking up to some strange face. Also make sure you take her favorite blanket or doll for her to hold and a good book for you to keep you mind off it during the procedure. Having your baby have to go though something like this heart wrenching but you have to remind yourself that they do this kinda thing all the time and she will be fine. That’s what helped me get though. Sorry if any of this scared you but for real try to get back in that room before she is totally awake. Good luck!!!!

My son had a ileostomy for three and a half years. He had bowel perforations, staph, and gangrene from it. It's SO scary, I know. If you have a doctor you can trust, that helps. I know your little girl had this done yesterday, I;m sorry i didn't see your post in time. Good luck, keep us posted!!

Hello M.,
I'm an anesthesia provider in Nebraska and I just wanted to let you know that most children do very well. It is nice to have a security item (blanket, stuffed animal or toy) that will make them feel more comfortable. The OR staff are usually very good at dealing with children. Some facilities will allow you to go back with your child, but do this only if you can handle watching. Some children do very well, others will give a bit of a fight. There are some oral medications that can be given to make the child drowsy before going back to the operating room, but I find that the children wake up much more disoriented and restless. Try to schedule your procedure for as early as possible (first case is best) because you have less time waiting in the pre-procedure area. Your child will probably be a bit off that whole day (some exceptions are out there) but it's best to not plan too much for the rest of the day.
Good luck, feel free to email me with further questions!

My son went under twice at both 2 and 3 years old for tubes in his ears. They didn't give him the happy meds beforehand, just took him back and put him under. It didn't take long, but they warned me that most kids wake up pretty discombobulated and thrash and scream until it wears off.

He did exactly that, I was glad they warned me or I probably would have freaked out. They calm down fairly quick, she will be fine!

Hi! My daughter was put under when she was about three years old. She was having an EEG done for seizures. They wanted her out so that she wouldn't move. First of all, it was very hard to watch, because she was so out of it, she looked dead. I cried. The worst part was on the way home. I was by myself. They should have told me to take someone with me. She was completely unable to control her body. So, here I am trying to drive and trying to keep her from bumping all around in the car. She would try to hold her head up and then it would just fall over. It was horrible! The best advice I can give you is to make sure someone goes with you, not only for support, but for the ride home, too. Good Luck! God Bless You!

Hi M.
My son was 2 and put under to fix a hernia. He is our first child and neither my husband or I had any surgery ourselves. I agree with another parent it is harder on the parent than the child. We went home 1 hour after the surgery and he was up running around and eating(we even called the doctor to make sure that was ok) I think the younger the child the easier the recovery.

I didn't see your last post but my oldest had a rectal biopsy when she was around 2 they were checking for hersprungs(spelling?) disease. She did fine. They gave her some meds oraly to make her "drunk" then when she was nice and happy they took her and did the procedure. She did have to be intubated and we had to wait till she was breathing on her own till we could see her. I don't know if it's the norm or not the intubation I meen. She has had a couple of other surguries since then and has done fine everytime. She says it doesn't hurt you just go to sleep and wake up all better. If they are haveing you do the cleaning out part with enimas. I recomend doing it in the bathroom and sitting her with support on the potty. Otherwise you will have a huge mess. The bonus for me with that was it helped her realize what the potty was for. But it was heartbreaking not being able to feed her. I fasted with her cause I just didn't feel right eating when she couldn't. And a happy meal was our first stop after it was over. Good luck and I hope everything is okay.
