ok well we recently moved to chesterfield & i haven't found a ped. yet so if any one has a good one that would be great. But my main issue is that my 18 month old swollowed a penny thursday night. I called poison control & our doctors office from back home, they said give it 3 days to pass. But today is the beggining of the 4th day and still no penny, im almost possitive i haven't miss it. I have checked every time, but nothing. Has any one else gone through this and how long did it take to appear? Hes not in any pain and he has been eating and using the bathrrom regurally, so i don't know if i should rush him to an er or walk in some patient care. Please help, thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

i took him to the doctors last night, they did 5 x-rays, and didn't see it anywhere. I guess i missed it, but thanks to everyone for the comments. R.

If it makes you feel any better, my mom still has the penny I swallowed. It's taped to the inside of her jewelry box. I'm 51 years old now, and never had any kind of digestive problems from it. Give him an oatmeal-raisin cookie (fiber)or two to help "push it along".

Hugs

Hi R.,

My son was almost 3 when he swallowed a penny. The doctor told me to take him to the ER for an x-ray to make sure it wasn't stuck or blocking anything. It was OK and the penny passed in a couple of days. I was told that they do an x-ray any time you think they swallowed anything to make sure there aren't any obvious complications.

Good luck and happy hunting! :-)

Well a penny would be close to the same color of his bowel movement so it could be very easy to miss if you were actually going through it with your fingers. more than likely if you haven't missed it, it will pass very soon, but it could be that it already has. If it is a big worry for you then I would take him to a place that can do x-rays and they will be able to take one and see if the penny is still in his system and where is it in case it got stuck somewhere. And that will help ease your mind.

I don't really have any advice for you on that situation other than When i was samller i swallowed pennies on several different occasions and each time my nother rushed me to the emergency room and each time the doctor on call sent us away with the davice that it would pass and just to check my poo. you would think that i would know better but i wasn't in diapers still so my mom broke out the old potty and i had to go in there where she performed a check after each visit, but they always did pass can't really give you a time frame but they always passed maybe this can just be a reassurance soince I cannot respond with any advice.

R., this is funny not what happen to your son but the story itself. when i was a little girl i use to swollow my money my dad would give us that was to keep my brothers from getting it from me. well i swollowed some money oneday and when it did come out it wasnt the same color it was when it went in. moeny changes colors and if you dont look close enough you will miss it. give it a little more time and as long as he isnt getting sick and cant go to the bathroom than he is fine. dont let him use the big potty let him use a small one so you can look at it and see when it comes out. you will have to move around in it( i know that is nasty) but you have to to make sure it comes out.

My daughter swallowed a barrette about the size of a penney when she was little. I didn't realize at first but assumed that it happened because one minute it was there and the next it was gone. I called our advice nurse and she gave the same advice you got.
My daughter had a fever that night I assume was from the foregn object in her. She passed it the next day and was fine.
If it has been this long I would definitely see a doctor. It could be stuck some where. Good luck!

Hi R.

Dr. McDonald Johnson who is at Commonwealth Peds. located in Colonial Heights is an excellant Dr. My son is 8 and she has been there from the beginning. She is by herself and the staff is great. Her number is ###-###-####. The penny should pass, but regardless, you need to contact someone locatly. Hope this helps

hi R. i am an preschool teacher of 6 years and you would not believe the onjects we would find in dirty diapers. anyway i would give it another week and give alot of apple juice to help soften her stool that way it would be easier to pass. i would not worry too much just watch for any discomfort or fever. believe me this is soo normal in children her age i'm sure she will pass it and she will be fine okay good luck.

Swallowing a penny will not harm your child. And by this time, trying to give him Ipecac, or have his stomach pumped won't do anything but make him miserable. It would already be in his bowels. I swallowed my mom's necklace when I was 16 months old, and she didn't get it back for 10 months. I suffered no residual damage or side effects. Kids swallow silly things all the time. Calm down. As long as it isn't poisonous don't worry about it! If you freak out about every little thing, so will he.
