15 Month Old Speech - Irving,TX

looking for some advice on my 15 month old daughter. She only has 3 words total and I was reading the other day that they should have 3 or more words other than mama and dada by this age. Should I be concerned? She is already on the list to be evaluated by ECI for some feeding problems and just didn't know if this is something I should bring up to them while they are here.

What can I do next?

Go ahead and bring it up to them when they evaluate her. It may not be an issue at all, but that way you will know their thoughts as well. My son has been seeing a speech therapist from ECI for about six months. He did not start until he was over 2 years old, but the improvements have been dramatic. Good luck!

If it's any consolation, my 15 month old daughter doesn't "talk" at all. At least not with out prompting. She will say "Mama" if you coach her but that's it. Sometimes she'll say "Uh-oh" but she mostly just points and says "Uh ah ah ah ah." We always make sure to show her the object and say it's proper name (cup, blanket, eat) but she has yet to try to mimic us. I brought it up at her 15 month appointment and our pediatrician didn't seem to be worried. I'm sure she'll re-evaluate at her 18 month and see if her speech has improved. I'm interested to hear what some of you responses are.

The feeding problems and her only being able to say 3 words may have a connection, especially if they are both caused by an oral motor problem. I'd definitely bring it up to them. Hopefully they would ask about this but, if they don't, I'd definitely make a point of mentioning it so that you can make sure that you get ST and/or OT services for her.

I don't think it could hurt to bring it up, but please don't rush to label your baby with speech problems that will follow her for years to come. Some kids just don't have as many words as others. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about it, when they do that month by month milestone stuff, it is so hard to be accurate with every child. If you are concerned though, bring it up. What can it hurt?

I wouldn't worry at this age but since she's already being evaluated, just mention it. I know at their 2 year checkup the Dr's touch on the speech topic. If the Dr thinks there might be a speech issue, he/she would recommend a Speech Therapist. I don't think that's needed at her age yet.

Bring it up. Eating, chewing, moving food with the tounge to the back of the mouth, swallowing, nursing, etc. are all motor skills that prepare children for speech. Having a feeding issue could cause a speech delay, or both issues could be caused by the same issue. Either way, catching it early is best.

If your daughter has an issue that EI agrees to treat, take your daughter to see a private therapist too. EI is there to help your child be functional when she gets to school, they are not there to be everything she needs to maximize her development. Sometimes that happens, but you should not count on it. Find out if she needs more from a private therapist and suppliment what you get for free with private services.

Good luck!

I'm a private speech path and a mom of 4, and although I don't want you to be alarmed, the best advice here is to go ahead and bring it up. By itself, I would have recommended to just give her time. However, with the presence of feeding problems, you'd want this to be on the radar. As someone else mentioned, it would surprise me if this wasn't part of your conversation during the evaluation, but be prepared to throw it out there if the evaluator doesn't bring it up. If the diagnosis calls for a speech path to work with your girl, the focus would still be on the feeding issues and oral-motor work, as this very well may improve her ability to form words as well. if you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me. I would bring it up but not worry about it yet. if she had tubes it will take her longer to talk. you might get her ears checked if she doesn't have tubes. dont panic yet but make sure there is not a medical reason for it like her ears. my oldest did this we put tubes in his vocabulary went up about 150 words in a week. my youngest is saying less than 20 words and has tubes but I am thinking now he is hard of hearing. it runs in his dads family heavily. I still am not real worried about my 2 1/2 yr old just slightly concerned and in december am getting his hearing tested and him in speech. I see the need but still not real worried yet. I realize some kids are jsut lazy and talk late. so I stay calm till december when I get a for sure from the doc.
