I am the mother of a Beautiful 14 month old baby girl who has no interest in walking on her own. Need advice on ways to get her to want to walk on her own. I have talked to the dr who says its nothing to worry about, but being a 1st time mom I worry. She climbs all over place and will walk with you holding her hands if she is in the mood. Other than that she gets around walking on her knees. Any tricks?

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

Have you considered chiropractic care for your daughter? It may be possible that she's out of alignment and it's simply to painful for her to try walking.

I am a huge fan of chiropractic care. It keeps my family healthy and boosts our immune system. I see a great chiropractor on the south side of Oklahoma City. It's a husband and wife team. Dr. Mollie saw me all through my pregnancy and adjusts my 2 year old son (He has seen her for the last year) and she adjusted my newborn at just 6 days old..and she gets adjustments once a week. Dr. Mollie, specializes in women and children.

Anyways, if you need their info..let me know.

I agree with what others have said... every child is going to do it at their own pace, at their own time, when they are ready! I have an 18-month old son who isn't walking yet, but I am not panicking either because he is developmentally delayed some due to his syndrome. I know he can do it though because he walks GREAT holding on to just one of my hands, pushing a toy, etc. He stands up without support all the time... so I know that it is just a matter of time.
Give her time... she'll be zooming around in no time and then you'll wonder why you were so anxious for her to walk. hehe

Savor it while you can! Sometimes the first child loves to take awhile longer - and as a first time mom, that makes us anxious...but then the second and third come around and you just want them to stay little as long as possible - and then they walk early! A girlfriend of mine has a happy, healthy baby that didn't walk until 18 months. Your little one will be just fine...just enjoy these last quiet months - cause when she starts walking - the world at your home will REALLY change! :) Blessings to you!

I really wouldn't stress about it. My son didn't start walking until 15 months. Now he's 18 months and practically running everywhere. She'll do it on her own time ;) Just keep encouraging her and giving her postive reinforcement!

my daughter did that too (walked on her knees) She took her first steps on her first birthday but only because we were coaxing her. We used cherrios and placed them around the table and then across the table etc and it seemed to do the trick! Good luck!

Hey A.,

My first walked at 10 months and was the busiest little boy ever! I was exhausted! Then, his 15 month younger brother was born and he walked at 11 months. I just THOUGHT I was exhausted when there was just one of the little toddler monsters running around...now there were two of them running interference for each other! Baby boy number three came along and he didn't walk until 15 months and I was praising God! Don't rush your babe to grow up. Savor every moment and milestone along her beautiful path...as she accomplishes it on her own time schedule. And, trust everyone else on this post, ENJOY the time now because you pretty much know where she is at all times. When she gets completely mobile...look out! :)

A., If I were you, I would try my best to take my Pediatricians' word for this and not worry about it too much. I know how easy it is to look at what other children are doing at the same age as your child and compare...but it really isnt possible to accurately compare one child with another. Even within the same family...one child will be an early walker, one wont, one will sleep through the night one will be a night owl. Just enjoy your daughter in each stage as she grows...my "baby" is now 23 years old and starting Graduate School...it seems like just yesterday that she was just taking her first steps!!! The key is in your description of your daughter...beautiful and energetic...sounds great to me...enjoy her..she will walk when she is ready and when she does you will be longing for the day that she was stationary!!! LOL

Does she have a favorite toy that you could hold and make her walk to you or maybe stand her in front of you and get her to take a few steps to you on her own....i know its worrisome but my son was lazy and didnt walk til almost 16 months, he is 13 now and never slows down, my daughter walked by 10 months, so every kid is different....more than likely one day she will see something she wants and take off walking for it.

A.,

I have a very active 17 1/2 month old little girl and am pregnant with number 3. When my daughter turned a year old I paniced because she was not walking yet. My dr. told me that she has the ability and she will when she is ready. She started walking at about 14 months old. I spoke with a friend of mine who said at anywhere between 12 and 18 mo0nths is normal. If she is not walking by the time she is 18 months old; then panic. Please keep me posted on her progress. My e-maill address is ____@____.com. I also have a myspace address. The URL for that is momofsweetkids.

My son was a knee walker too! Both of my children were born very prematurely so I tend to have a very relaxed outlook on development with my kiddos. They were also both 18 months old before beginning to walk. My son walked on his knees for at least a month before actually taking a step. My advice is to be patient and do not push her because when she is ready she will do it. We put cowboy boots on my son over memorial day weekend and that is when he decided to walk and he has gone non-stop since. With my daughter she had to be barefoot to walk when she first started so I think each child is different and prefers diffent things. We have one of the cars that can also be used as a push toy and that helped some. We had to put a brick under the seat to weigh it down at first because it went too fast so you might try something like that. I would not suggest using a walker ever. The professionals that come out to work with my little ones are totally against them and say they actually delay the process. I hope this helps you.

don't worry about it; she will walk when she is ready; my son is 16 months old and did not start walking until the day after his 15 month birthday; he was 6 and 1/2 weeks; i don't know if that had anything to do with the walking timeline; some babies walk at 9 months, some at 18 months

What everyone is saying is true, every child develops at a different pace. The only thing I would be concerned about is if she acts like it hurts to walk. When I was that age I wouldn't walk because my ankles hurt. By the time I was 2 I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Don't let this concern you, it probably is nothing...just keep a close eye on her when she is walking, this is not something that a pediatrician would necessarily look for unless there is a family history.

Good luck with your little girl.

Listen to the doctors! I was 15 months before I walked. There isn't a true timetable on a lot of things, so don't worry about them. I was in a lot of "things" when I was little, like a swing, bouncer, johnnie-jump-up, etc., and so I wasn't strong enough to walk as early as some. Also, they say that they are busy developing both gross motor skills, walking, and intelligence, so if they walk later than some, it's because they are busy developing their mind!!! She will walk when she's ready. In the meantime, enjoy NOT needing to chase after her constantly!!! :)
