13 Month Old Waking at 5:30 - Tucson,AZ

Hi moms!

Since 9 months of age up until recently my son would sleep 11 - 11 1/2 hours each night (sometimes 12). Our routine is very good and very consistent. We start dinner between 5:30 - 5:45, then bath, then books, then bed time at 7:00 and he wouldn't wake until 6:00 - 6:30 (again, sometimes 7:00). However, two weeks ago he started waking at 5:30, talking, giggling, etc. I am not picking him up until after 6:00 in the hopes he falls back asleep but no such luck.

Could this just be a phase? Should I maybe push dinner to 6:00, then bath, then books but still keep the 7:00 bedtime? Again, he used to do this and be just fine up until two weeks ago. Could it be teeth, getting older?

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Is the sun rising earlier lately? That might be a factor.

Good for you for not picking him up right away. It's a safe place for him to have his own quiet playtime. And it lets you listen to him giggle and talk and think 'Oh he is so adorable, so smart, so cute. I'm so thankful for him.' Put some books in his crib after he falls asleep at night, in the morning he'll have something to look through.

If you decide to change your bedtime routine, I think it's best to do so by 15 minute incriments, maybe pushing it all forward 15 minutes one week, then another 15 minutes the next week. This way, it's not a big difference.

Yes, it could be teeth. It could just be a phase. Like I said, it could be the sun. Are his naps longer lately? Maybe he's napping too long, so then not sleeping at night as long? I wouldn't worry. If you're tired, you might try going to bed a little earlier yourself so you can get your beauty-sleep. Sounds like you're doing a good job keeping things consistent with him (which kids love). I'm sure you'll make the right decisions with this too.

Sounds like a phase to me. As soon as you figure out their schedule, they change it! Just go with the flow!

In my opinion if you can just push the bed time back later. Sleeping that long straight is pretty good so if you want him to sleep in later I would push the bed time later. The older they get the less they sleep and we had to push our daughters bed time back so she would sleep later, she is now 3 andgoes to bed at 830 and wakes at 8. What ever works for your schedule and routine. Hope this was helpful.

My 13 month old did the same thing! I discovered that it was her molars coming in (all 4 at once!) and as soon as one or two broke the surface, she was back to sleeping from 7:00 to 6;30 or 7:00. So in my experience, this may just be a phase. Hang in there!!!! and good luck!

D., everything with little ones is "just a phase". Little kids are usually early risers because life is exciting and they can't wait to start the day. Take the early morning time and use it for a cuddle. He'll go back to sleeping later again. He won't be rising at 5:30 forever!

I think what I've learned with my 2 1/2 year old is that nothing really lasts forever. So, the awesome schedule won't last forever, but neither will the horrible schedule. It seems that right when you get things figured out they change it on you, which goes for naps, nighttime sleeping, behavior, etc. Anyways, I feel your pain, my 8 month old daughter wakes up pretty early --- like sometimes in the 4 o'clock hour. I think though that keeping the nighttime routine the same is important, I wouldn't change that.
Good luck.
