10 Year Old with Bunionettes

My 10 year old daughter has bunionettes on the side of both feet that seem to painful for her. Her ortho said that he did not want to file them down because he did not want to mess with the growth plate. He suggested for her to get sneakers that are wider in the toe area. She has been wearing Stride Rite sneaks up until about three years ago and that is when we swtiched her to Nike. I believe that is when they started growing on her feet. Any moms out there have any suggestions for what type of sneakers that may have a nice wide width in the toe area?

What can I do next?

I don't have bunions but I have flare ups with gout. When I flare up,i can wear nothing but my New Balance 442. It has a wide spacing for laces and you can make them as tight or loose as needed. I love them so much ,, I bought an extra pair!

I have had bunions since about that age. I had surgery at 14 and it HURT. I wear Adidas because I think it helps and has a bigger toe area. I regret having the surgery.

My podiatrist recommends New Balance. Try to find a New Balance store for custom fit and a wider selection of sizes typically not available at sporting goods/big box stores.

For what its worth, I'm told that they give discounts if you say you've been referred by a podiatrist. BTW, it may not be a bad idea to see a podiatrist to monitor the progressive nature of bunion growth.

I'd go back to the Stride Rites if they were working for her before.

I see people say go back to Stride Rite, but if your 10 year old is like mine, there is no way she would go for that. I have bunions that don't bother me (thank goodness) most likely caused by my very flat feet. I had a knowledgeable sneaker salesman (in a running store) tell me that for low arches either Asics or New Balance are the way to go, in case she has the same problem. Good luck.
