1 Year Old with Cough/runny Nose... When to See the Doc?

My son has had a clear, consistant runny nose for what seems like weeks... the post nasal drip is making him cough. He was just at the pediatrician a week ago, and I had asked her about it. She said those symptoms paired with his crazy drooling and the fact that he has 4 canine teeth coming in, that he's probably getting over a cold and that this is due to teething. He does not have a fever, and is acting completely normal... until this morning. He doesn't really want to eat. Now he MAY be coming off a growth spurt, OR maybe his throat hurts? It's not red or anything. I just feel like the poor little guy has been coughing and snotty for forever... I am going to call the pediatrician in the morning Monday... or does this sound like something to get checked out sooner? Usually, with coughs and runny noses, there's nothing that can be done, and since he doesn't have a fever I'm not sure if it's even worth my time, but I know laryngitis is going around (not that he's been exposed to anyone with it, to my knowledge)... what would you do??

What can I do next?

Colds sometimes take a couple weeks to go away. Laryngitis is a bacterial infection and would probably accompany a fever. If hes playing and eating ok and not very fussy with no fever, hes probably fine. If hes having troubles sleeping, or not wanting you to lay him down, I would go have his ears checked.

I took my DD in and they said throat was red but ears were fine, just to give fluids. Kind of a wasted trip but I felt better knowing it wasn't an ear infection.

I would give him PB8 (an excellent/complete PRObiotic rather than an ANTIbiotic)...it's cheap and maybe give him 1/2 capsule each night (we open it and dump it in our kid's mouths almost every night) and see if that helps. Also, if you are giving him dairy, this can do it as well. Maybe get the PB8 and stop the dairy for just 2 weeks and see? Dairy, despite what the dairy council would sell you, causes increased mucus production.

We don't do a lot of dairy and give PB8 to our kids haven't had so much as a runny nose in about 2 years.

I agree about getting his ears checked for an infection or fluid. Other than that, run the hot shower water before baths so steam the room up. Vicks Vapo mixed with boiled water in a bowl in bathroom while he's bathing is good. Get a cool mist humidifier for nighttime sleep every night in the wintertime. Make sure to clean it once a week b/c of mold. My 1 yr old just stopped eating as well, it may be due to the age and learning new things, like walking. My dr. says not to worry unless her weight falls which it hasn't. Keep an eye for weight and make sure he's getting enough nutrition in other ways- milk or yoghurt, etc...Hope he feels better real soon!

At the age of 30, we just found out why my daughter has had a drippy nose and too frequent infections of the sinuses and upper respiratory. In her case, it wasn't allergies. It was vasomotor rhinitus. When I looked it up, it was fascinating and answers some questions about my and my sister's clear nasal drip that comes and goes -- and h;ow our worst times are those at the change of seasons. Examine this to see if you see a match.

Also know that tehre are scary things that can cause a cough so don't hesitate to ask hard questions. Like, could this be caused by any form of cancer or any serious disease. Make them think hard.

Also know that many doctors misdiagnose as they're in a hurry and expect you to come back if their suggestions don't work. Don't accept a "just live with it" diagnosis as it could result in a "just die of it" ending.

Keep the humidifire going-air out your house-just in case there are viruses lingering-and maybe he should have his little ears checked today..........good luck-I was alwaysso sad when the children were sick-still am, really, but in the olden times-we went to the doctor the first time they sniffed because it usually meant ear infection-and that can make them cough.
