1-Year-old Eats My Food; I'm Hungry!

This is crazy. :) My baby is 1.5 years old and eats my food. I snatch food and go in the bathroom, and gulp it down in there quickly a lot of the time. You wouldn't think it would be that hard for a mom to get calories down, huh? I don't get to sit down and eat ever, usually, b/c even if I make something I am up and busy serving all the kids. Before bed I get a bowl of cereal, and I'm hungry!

He simply won't stop, and it does not matter if he is hungry or not. He always wants to eat if there is any food. He does this to his siblings too, who are two older toddlers.
He ate every single bite of my meatballs the other day from a Healthy Choice meal. I know the portion is not huge but that was my planned protein source for lunch to fuel my pregnancy.
I can't always sit down and eat EXACTLY the same thing he is in his high chair. Plus, he still gags on stuff so I have to be careful with what he gets.
I don't know if I am asking for solutions. He'll outgrow it, but have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous?

What can I do next?

I agree with others , tell him no , he has to learn that he cannot take other people's food. Where will it stop?

This is ridiculous. Tell him "no." Is he the boss? He shouldn't be.

Mama you're gonna have to put your foot down! He needs to learn (and hopefully before next baby is born) that he's not the one in charge of the family! Everyone should eat at the same time, and he should be in a high chair so he's not stealing from others. He's old enough to eat what others eat, so just cut into tiny portions for him not to choke. So make the decision to sit and eat when your family does. You need the calories and he needs to learn some baby manners. :) If he is not in the chair when you eat, be sure to tell him no, and sit him on the ground when he tries to climb up and eat off your plate. Even if you spend the whole meal putting him back on his bottom, he has to learn. Be consistent, and don't give in or he'll really test you more. Do this with whoever is eating. He needs to learn his food is on his plate, or high chair tray, and there only. He can ask for more, and you can give it to him, but he can't steal off of others plates.

Yes this is typical behavior for his age, but if you don't deal with it, he won't just magically out grow it. :)

Best wishes!

My 18 month old does the same thing! If my husband or I sit down seperately to have breakfast, snack, lunch whatever she is right there wanting to eat what we eat no matter what she has had. We laugh about it! She will eat green beans from my plate but not her own. Things just taste better off someone else's plate :)

For one hes a growing boy who needs alot. His metabolism is probably high so hes all day. Why don't you make two when you make soemthing for you if you know hes gonna eat it. Let him eat with you than tell him he needs to let you eat. Especially if your pregnant you can't deni yourself food. You also need to put him a meal plan where he eats three times and has snacks inbetween.

lol! you just described my 16mnth old! but he only does it to me, and not my husband. yesterday I had an omlette and even though my son just had a bowl of oatmeal half a banana and half a cereal bar he still wanted my food. this is what I do when I am desperate. i let him eat on my lap. and I put his food on my plate the closest to him and he eats it and I eat my food, oh and I eat my lunch while he is napping.

Wow! What a good eater you have on your hands!! My son is two and hardly eats anything. I kinda wish I was your shoes :)

Anyhow, just offer him something else and tell him it's mommy's food. Good luck.

I don't think your child is the one that's ridiculous mama!!! If you want to eat then you give him a serving of whatever he is eating and then you serve yourself. He whines and cries...it's okay. You want to nip this in the bud NOW or else he will ALWAYS be eating off your plate.
(while I certainly understand giving tastes off your plate, I did it too, there is no way they would be getting my whole meal!)

I've got 3 kids. I am so used to putting their food on my plate so I get to eat my own food. Even if I'm feeding them something different than what I'm having I put theirs on my plate or I put their puffs on my plate or whatever. They do outgrow it eventually. My oldest would eat nothing at all unless it came off my plate for a long while.

My granddaughter is like that! I found that if I sit with her and give her her food and then put some extra of it on my plate along with whatever I am eating when she wants to eat from my plate I dip into the food I put there of hers and she thinks shes getting whatever I am eating. I may give her a bite or two of my actual food but the majority of the time I give her her own food.
If all else fails does she still take naps? If so, eat up then!! : )
Good luck

Agree with Marta. Eating all together is a perfect start.

I'm kinda curious as to why you're eating things like 'Healthy Choice'. Especially while pg.High in sodium. There are far better ways to get protein... Cheaper too.

My kids did this too. We had to start by puttin more on our plat than intended, give the little one an empty plate and show them we are taking from our plate to put the same food we're eating onto theirs.

My year old daughter will eat all day if we let her. She'll eat her meal, and then I'll sit down to eat something, and she's in my food also. I think it's hilarious. I know, I'm hungry too! I think they're just growing so much, and they're so darn curious, they just want everything we have. I had to laugh because I've done the same thing- literally snuck food so that she doesn't see me eating, otherwise she goes crazy and wants whatever I have. I think it's great, but it can be frustrating when we need to eat too! :)

Lol--I run a daycare and I usually end up eating the same thing they eat. Its easier for me and sets a good example for them--once their fed I'll put them back in the playroom and then try to eat there to keep an eye on them...Well soon they are all surrounding me wanting to eat the same darn thing they just had! Very simply I tell them no--including my daughter who I would usually share with. Lol--I tell them its the same they had lots of time to eat and said they were done--Ms. F's turn! Brutal I know! Especially now that I'm pregnant! I tell them its my "hungry bear time" and they need to go play!
