When Is the Best Time to Have Garage Sales?

The people in my neighborhood usually get together to have a garage sale day twice a year, but choosing a date is a hassle. I don't care too much because I live on a cul de sac and hardly anyone comes to mine. But there's always someone who wants a different day because they're out of town, or there's a school carnival, or it's too close to a holiday, etc. What I'm looking for is something easy to remember like the first Saturday in June and October, so they won't argue over the date any more.

What times of year do you find that garage sales are the most successful? Do people actually look in the newspaper for garage sales anymore, or have things like craigslist replaced it?

What can I do next?

April and October. Not too hot and not too cold. Weather can really put a damper on a garage sale. Stay away from holiday weekends. Pick a day and know that it won't work for everyone. I think garage sales are still effective, but they don't last as long as they used to. Start early and once it really slows down, put up a "half off everything" sign and let the stuff go at half price. It it doesn't go in the early, busy times, it is over-priced or it is not in high demand.

The first Saturday of the month when everyone gets paid. Also from 7-12 makes the people come early because they don't want to miss it.
1st Saturday in August could be back to school clothes sale.

Beginning of the month, early in the day on the weekend on a day where the weather will be not to hot or cold. You can put something on Craiglist for yardsales also . If you do Sunday right when people are getting done with church

The first saturday after the 1st and 15th is when people have cash after payday. Also, if you are considering twice per year, I would do it when its cooler, assuming TX is as hot as summer is in AZ. We don't go to garage sales at ALL when it hot out. Good luck!

I would say the first Saturday in the month (spring or summer) and have it early, start at like 7AM. You can also put an ad in craigslist that you are having a garage sale and/or in the paper.

if you are near a military base the 1st and 15th is great because that's payday.

for my area? anytime is a good time!! We had one in January - and of course it snowed the night before - but we got customers!! We sold stuff.

Signs and advertising are how you get people to your garage sale. If you don't have signs directing people then they don't know you're there.

For your development? Just set a date - the first Saturday in June and the last Saturday in September. Then if they want in - great - if not - that's their problem.

Make sure your signs are SIMPLE - all the same color so people will follow the color pattern. ARROWS. Craigslist and your local pennysaver or other newspaper.

Well a lot depends on your school system and area activities. In our area most people avoid the end of May to mid-June due to graduations (college and high school and father's day).

I would think a good time would be the first Saturday of May, August or September.

My BFF and I enjoy going to garage sales. We always start by looking at the ads in the morning paper and planning out our route.

The end of the school year, right before summer is a bit too late in my mind for summer clothes. I think earlier, in the months of April or May is perfect. That way the clothes for spring and summer are put out and sell better. Think short sleeves, bathing suits, sandals, tank tops, shorts, etc....

Then in the fall getting ready for school is on the minds of parents. So, I am looking for garage sales that say "back to school clothes for sale" when I look at the classifieds. That is when coats, long sleeves and jeans will sell the best.

Check with your city. We can do any weekend but there is a weekend that has kind of become an "unofficial" citywide tradition. It is the first weekend of May. Usually when it is finally nice in Minnesota and like others mentioned...first of the month when people get paid.

I do Estate and Garage Sales..

Always first weekend of the month.
Craigslist and we do the newspaper, because there are still a lot of people (older) who do not use the internet.

I also have been purchasing the Sassy Signs.. I found them here on mamapedia.. They are so cute!

We used craigslist. Posted signs at major intersections near our house. April and October are good months.
