What's Normal?

Hi Moms,

I am hoping you can help me. My daughter will be 3 at the end of March. The past two evenings she's come home from her daycare with what seems to be discharge in her underwear. She goes there all day while her father and I are at work. She is pretty much potty trained, except for sleeping, and really I know it is not urine because I think her panties would be soaked through, and the day care would change her. So I am wondering about discharge in young girls. It was yellowish, not smelly, and the area itself looks just like it usually does. She is not scratching herself, so I think she's okay.....but I really am unsure about the color (maybe she needs to drink more water...?) This is my first time she's had this like this.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

What can I do next?

I agree with Rachel D. Same happens to my daughter who is 3.5 when she doesn't wipe so great...looks like discharge later in the day but really is just bad wiping.

Could be discharge (in which case I'd take her to the pediatrician), but being that she's only 3, she's probably not wiping herself well enough and the residual urine is dripping in her panties when she thinks she's done. Practice at home, and ask her to show you how she's doing it.

It's normal for females to have vaginal discharge. Even 3 year old females. Their vaginas work like ours, the discharge is likely normal, unless she's itchy or irritated or it smells bad. Discuss with her doctor if you're really concerned though, it's never wrong to address a concern with the doctor

the first thing is to take her to the doctor, also did you talk to the daycare about this?

Maybe be the very start of a yeast infection. You may want to giving her some yogurt (live active cultures) each day or possibly a high quality gummy probiotic.

It could be yeast if it's yellow. Call the nurse line at the hospital and Ask a Nurse. That's be best free advise there is.

My daughter had some discharge once and it ended up being a UTI. Is she going potty more often or having trouble going. You might want to keep an eye on it and see if it continues. Good luck

My second daughter had a discharge one time. It did freak me out too. I wondered how in the world does a baby get discharge. But my sister is an R.N. and she said that it can happen...so I didn't pursue it with a visit to the doctor and it only happened once. BTW: I've always been home with my children full time so I know without a doubt that my daughter was not tampered with.

I agree, my daughter is not the best wiper. She had yellow stains too so I got on her about her wiping, she also kept leaving drops of pee on the toilet seat. Shes 6, so I pretty much leave her alone in the bathroom, but one day I watched her go and when she wipes, she stands up to do it and drops pee everywhere!! I dont see how you can properly wipe while standing up. No wonder she has pee in her underwears.

My daughter who is now 5 has had this occasionally. It could be a yeast infection (though she would probably have itch or rash too), or due to her being in a pull up at night (my daughter still has to wear Pull Ups at night). Just make sure she is clean and dry when she changes into undies in the morning. The other big correlation we have found is Bubble Bath.... she loves using Bubble Bath and I have noticed that she has had this issue mostly when using Bubble Bath in her baths. My friends daughter has had the same issue and can't use any bubble bath. It seems to clear up when we stop using bubbles.
