hi, my daughter is 1 1/2 and just recently over the past month has started doing this weird thing with her eyes. 1st she starts to squint (which i know she doesn't have a problem with her eyesight because i can be in a totally other room, and if she can see me, and i have something in my hand she wants, she come running even when i'm trying to hide it). after a couple of minutes of the squinting, she starts to close her eyes and move around, whether climbing up and down the chair next to me, or walking around. she bumps into everything, and laughs when she does it, and has a smile on her face THE WHOLE TIME. i have no idea if this is just a stage they go through, or if i should talk to her dr. about this. i know they do weird things, and test themselves in weird ways, i'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed that their child has done this kind of thing.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

well, i'd like to thank all for the responses...as it turns out, i payed close attention to when she would do the weird thing with her eyes...turns out EVERY time was when she was ready for bed. now it makes sense to me...i do it too, just usually i'm rubbing my eyes to keep myself awake, she would just close and squint her eyes lol. oh, and now, months later, she's just starting to do the close and squint of her eyes when she's around ppl she doesn't know, and doesn't want to be bothered with them. she's such a character i tell ya! thanks again~

my dd would do (and still does sometimes) a similar thing. she will put a blanket or shirt over her head and walk around and run into things. she does it very slowly and doesn't get hurt...but it's as if she's preteding to be blind. also at mealtimes sometimes she'll squint and close her eyes and eat with her eyes closed.

i posted a similar post on babycenter.com and got many responses saying it was normal at this age...

Sounds like she's playing and having a good time. My son started squinting and even poking himself in the eye, right after he watched a baby Einstein video that teaches body parts. he thought that was funny, because he knew it was an eye. She's exploring herself and her surroundings, and is amusing herself. Enjoy it.

My son is 22 months and he closes his eyes and walks around bumping into things and laughs, all the time. He's been doing it for a while. It's just something they do. Hope this helps.

It sounds like your little girl is learning and experimenting with her body. I could be wrong, but it sounds like she is just being a normal toddler. :)

My son started rolling his eyes in the back of his had at around the same age. The doctor (neurologist) spent an hour with him and he was able to catch the episode in the office. He called it a childhood "tic" and that it was most prevalent in boys. He didn't have to have any additional testing but this is something that I would definately bring to the pediatrician. It has since subsided and I ahven't even thought about it until seeing your posting. Good luck!
