18 Month Old Squinting

I agree that little kids can just simply do weird things.

It's good that you will be following up with the pediatrician. But, I'd like to share something deadly honest with you.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and I vividly remember walking around as a child with my eyes half shut because I thought people would think I was Chinese.
The blonde hair would never be a clue to the contrary, right?

I was just noticing differences in the people in the world around me and "experimenting".

Fortunately, I got over that phase and my mom didn't drag me to a neurologist or psychiatrist. I was just being a weird and imaginative little kid.

I also alternated closing each of my eyes. I noticed that if I closed my left eye, I could see one thing, If I closed my right eye, I could see something different. When I opened both eyes, I could see everything in the middle at once.

For what it's worth, I was found to have a very high IQ in spite of my little weirdities.

I wouldn't worry. Follow up with the pediatrician and perhaps get an eye exam just to be on the safe side.

Your little one might do lots of funky things before it's all said and done and be perfectly normal.

I would keep maybe a diary to detail when he seems to be doing it the most. Is it when he is looking at something far away or up close, while he's watching tv, reading...I think you get the picture. Also, does he appear to have headaches? Since he is so young, he may not be able to indicate that, but if he seems upset for no reason, maybe try and figure out if that could be a problem. If he does or he gets upset or agitated, try and watch for a trend of occurrence, meaning does he do it after he has been squinting a lot.

It may very well be a phase in that he is learning how to use those different muscles and how things look differently when he does squint. But since I have worn glasses since a very young age and 2 of my 3 children do, I think it is worth trying to look for patterns and definitely talk to your dr about it. But U don't think it is anything you need to make an extra appt for...waiting until the end of the month should be fine, unless he seems to get headaches, then for his comfort, you may want look at getting him in earlier or look for pediatric eye doctors.
