Blinking Eyes "Strongly"

Hi moms - first, just so you know, I am asking his doctor about this, but wanted some quick thoughts here. My 2.5 year old has started blinking his eyes "hard" the past few days, like he is trying to clear them (not a great description; sorry). He's not rubbing them, so I don't think they itch. My husband is concerned that it may be a sign of a vision problem. I'm wondering whether it is consistent with allergies (for folks with allergies, do you blink a lot when your eyes itch?), though I haven't seen other symptoms in him. Would love to learn your thoughts on this. Thanks!

It sounds like you might be describing a tick. This isn't a huge concern, but should still be checked out. Does it seem to get worse if he's stressed out?

You need to see a doctor. I hate to even say this but the first thing I thought of was Tourette syndrome.

A neighbors 5 yr old son did this and they thought it was a tick and it turned out to be high blood pressure. Once he was treated for that it went away. Good to see the Dr.

My son did the same thing at the same age. My husband took our son to both the eye doctor and the peditrician. They both said it was very common at this age in within months it would go away. Sure enough it did. I was scared it was somethng serious. What I also noticed, was he did it more when he was watching TV. (Which wasnt much at this age) but what I think triggered it, was he used to watch the Baby Einstein videos, and the little caterpiller in the beginning would do 2 hard blinks. My son would blink at the same time and then continue this for the whole video.... once I noticed this I wasnt as nervous. I hope this helps! It could be a few things but once the doctors does the checkup you will know more. Good Luck!

It could be a tic, but you really need to have this checked out by a doctor. It wouldn't be Tourette's if there's a tic but no vocal component to the behavior.

I agree about the tic issue - perhaps research motor tics and ask your doctor about that possibility.

Of course it could be lots of other things too.

Good luck.

My son did the same thing at about 3 years old, sometimes he would do it and sometimes he wouldn't. I did notice that when we talked about it in front of him he seemed to do it more. I had his eyes checked and they were fine. His ped said that this is a common thing around this age, I guess they develop funny habits/tics and then it just goes away. It did go completely away just a few months after it started.

Also google" Magnesium deficiency", a symptom is blinking. Weird I know, but I did try to give my son more magnesium rich foods during that time. Not sure if it helped, but it didn't do any harm.

I wouldn't worry too much.

It might just be something he's discovered that he can do and control. If you've given him a little attention for it he's liking that attraction. My oldest did this when he was about 4, we started calling him "Winky"... but it went away as quickly as it came, ran it's course in about a week.

My daughter was a little over 3 when she started doing the same thing. I took her to the doctors, specialist, eye doctors, you name it I did it. After all the doctors visits her pediatrican prescribed her some allergy medicine to take once a day so we started it, by the next day her blinking had went down tremendously then to nothing. She still does it every now and then, when she starts I give her the allergy medicine right away and it stops. After a couple days of her allergy meds it doesnt happen for a couple months. Hope this helps! I had no one to turn to when this happened to my daughter,l thought something was seriously wrong with her.

This could just be a habit. I was a lot older than your son, but I totally remember blinking my eyes hard as you are describing when I was school age. It was just a nervous habit that I couldn't control. I just had to blink my eyes. Eventually I stopped doing it. I was just talking about this to my husband the other day because our oldest who is six has little habits too.

It might be a vision problem or allergies like you said. My daughter was older than your son and we noticed she was blinking and then squinting when looking at things in the distance. We took her to the eye doctor and she indeed needed glasses for distance.

You are doing a good thing by taking him to the doctor. Just be sure to tell him when this is happening (ie: watching tv, reading a book or just all the time).

My son did the same thing when he was about 3. I believe it was a nervous habit and he did outgrow it. I called the doctor too and got some allergy eye drops but none of that really helped. He had to outgrow it. It only took a couple months for him to stop.

I'm sure your son will outgrow it.

I get allergies, as does many other members of our family. To answer your question, none of us blink hard. There's a lot of rubbing and squinting, though.
