Seeking Salon with Asian (Japanese) Haircutters

I just met a delightful family that moved here from Japan and they're looking for a hair salon. The husband was told by a salon stylist that she did not wish to use her scissors on his hair because it is so coarse that it would dull the scissors. Honestly, I've never heard of anything like that, but I think he was pretty embarassed. So the family is looking for a salon where Japanese hair is "OK". Anybody know a good place in San Rafael or Novato? Thanks so much.

L.,
I wish I knew a salon for you, but I had to respond in shock that someone would be so insulting to say something like that! Unbelievable. That means he turned the Japanese man away?! And I thought we lived in the most liberal/peace loving part of the country.

Unless there was some sort of miscommunication, the hairstylist was completely out of line. Any stylist should be able and willing cut all types of hair. She may have been worried that she wasn't good with his type of hair (heavy straight) and made up an excuse. Scissors get dull. You sharpen them. Half my family is Asian and we have no prob with dull scissors!! I love Joe Hamer in Petaluma and they have plenty of international experience. I would also mention making a trip to SF (even Japantown) for fun or a stylist. That might be more comfortable and familiar. Please let your new friends know that their experience is not typical!

Hello, I am Japanese who asked to L. about hair salon. I'm sorry,I forgot to say to her that my husband was said it in Chicago, not in here. (As a result he could be put hair cut, but he wasn't happy.) The people in Marin(california) is very very kindly and friendly, so I LOVE this place.
Thank you for your respond!! I am going to some salon you recommended for me.
I always thank L. and who live in Marin.

Hi My husband is Japanese American and gets his hair cut by Marcia Day in San Rafael. She does a great job! www.marciaday.com, ###-###-####.

Also more in the budget range would be the hair salon in Red Hill Shopping Center in San Anselmo...they are very nice and do a good job.

seems like either the scissors or the haircutter is dull, perhaps both.my hair is extremely coarse, and i've never been told it's a problem to cut.
