My husband and I just found out we're expecting our first child, and am interested in hearing any sort of advice anyone can offer regarding a good OB GYN or hospital in the western suburbs. We're interested in finding a doctor that will be there to walk us through this very new and excited time. I'd love to hear of personal experiences that can help us find the right fit.

What can I do next?

I went to see the midwifves in Park Nicollet (St. Louis Park) for my 3rd baby and for the 4th. I loved them. Couldn't say enough good things about them. I just found out I lost the 4th baby and they referred me to Dr. Nicole Dean(OB GYN) in Park Nicollet. She seems to be very wonderful when we met her, very compassionate and caring.

That's my experience. Hope it helps. And Congrats on the baby, very exciting times for you guys!

If you are interested in a fabulous nurse-midwife - Kathrine Simon at North Metro Midwives in Golden Valley. She has her own practice and delivers and works with the docs at North Memorial. She delivered both our boys and I hope to use her for our future babes. She is so compassionate and supportive and so much fun. I was able to have two natural births just like I wanted, but I know she has delivered in all sorts of situations. I use her for all my personal care as well.

I don't know if you consider Shakopee the west suburbs, but I loved my experience with the midwives at ParkNicollet at St. Francis hospital. Not only were the midwives great, the hospital was absolutely wonderful. We had some complications after our first son's birth, and he had to stay there for a week, and they let me stay in my room there for free, even after I had been discharged.

Oakdale OBGYN is located in West Health on 494/55 and Dr. Christine Sarkinen does an excellent job. She delivered our baby and I would never consider anyone else for the job next time around. Dr. Sarkinen is great at her job and has a normal perspective on things. She was never alarming when discussing possible problems, just factual and practical so that we didn't freak out over "nothing". It is also a huge bonus that she has a good sense of humor and fun personality in general. Oakdale OB has about 10 dr.s on staff and they see patients at several locations (Plymouth, Maple Grove, Robbinsdale-others?). I highly recommend this OB group and Dr. Sarkinen in particular. Congrats on your expected arrival!

I also go to Oakdale OBGYN but see Dr. Leafblad. He's very friendly and thorough, family-oriented, and actually takes the time to talk with you and get to know you. He was also named to Mpls. St. Paul Magazine's top doctor list.
This practice was recommended to me by a friend who is a Postpartum Nurse and has worked with these doctors.

I would definately suggest OBGYN West in the Wayzata Medical Building at 394/101. Specifically Dr. Klingman (if she's still there) When it was determined due to my illnesses that my daughter would be coming almost 2 months premature, I knew that we were in the best hands. This clinic also has an office in Eden Prairie. You usually have the same nurse and the Dr.'s make every attempt possible at making sure they are the delivering doctor.

Congratulations!!

I don't know how far north you are, but I love Dr. Malinda Johnson at Allina Women's Health Care next to Mercy Hospital.

I agree that OB GYN West in Eden Prairie is a great clinic!! I also had Dr. Grootwasink. He is a very intelligent OB DR. He knows what he is doing. I would recommend him to anyone! Fairview Southdale Hospital is a great place to have a baby!

I saw Dr. Grootwasink at the Wayzata OB/GYN office. I think he is there on Mondays and Fridays. He even came in to deliver my baby girl on a Sunday.

I'll add to the advice here and suggest OBGYN West - I see Dr. Sheryl Louie (generally in Eden Prairie, but I've gone to the Wayzata office as well). I'm not sure whether she's accepting new patients, as I know she's highly sought after. I've been with her for nearly seven years. She's helped us with a myriad of issues and referred us on to infertility specialists. She is a fantastic listener and great doctor. Best of luck in your search.

OBGYN West in Eden Prairie is awesome. The doctors are very nice, easy to get a hold of, and explain everything. I had Dr Heegaard for my second child and will again now for the third. They deliver at Fairview Southdale in Edina.

I've been going to OBGYN west for about 2 years now. I work with Dr. Princ, who actually is a fairly new doc (been practicing for 2.5 years). I like her a lot. She's quite thurough in her approach, and seems to be very knowledgable.

I see Dr. Gregg Teigen at Ob gyn west and would highly recommend him. He has offices in Eden Prairie and Wayzata. When I delivered he made every effort to be there. I like that I wasn't just assigned to the doctor on duty. I've been realy happy with the clinic.

I have gone to Diamond Women's Center in Edina (across the street from Southdale) for about 8 years now and really like their clinic... from the doctors, to the nurses and medical technicians, to even the staff in the business office. I usually see Dr. Mary Ann Jacob, but have also seen Dr. Juan Angelats (who delievered our first child). I highly recommend both. They have always been very approachable and willing to answer any questions I had. There are also 2 doctors in the clinc (Dr. Chow and Dr. Wright who have been named in the list of top doctors in Mpls./St. Paul magazine.

Looks like you're getting enough names, but I'd like to add mine to your list. I've seen the Midwives through Park Nicollet. They deliver at Methodist in St. Louis Park. This is our second baby and I'm looking forward to another natural childbirth.
A friend of mine is just starting out with the HCMC Midwives-she has been very impressed with their knowledge, low c-section and intervention rates and knowing that a Dr. is across the hall if complications occur during labor/delivery is putting her mind at ease.
Make sure that who ever you do decide on-interview them. Ask about their c-section rates, episiotomy rates, inductions, % of births they attend, etc. Make sure you tell them what you expect and see if they're a good fit. Switching part way through is easy too-so if something makes you uncomfortable-you're not stuck! It's all about you! Have a great pregnancy, labor and delivery!

Okay, he's not in the western suburbs, but well worth the trip!! My family practitioner, Dr. Daniel Larkin, is an ob. doc as well. He goes to all his own deliveries (most offices just send whoever is on-call). He is young, funny, and is up on all the latest information. He is also certified to do waterbirths. He is at Healtheast on Rice Street in St. Paul. He's really great, and though I moved from St. Paul to the western suburbs between my first and second children, it was worth the drive to see Dr. Larkin again! An added bonus is that he goes to Woodwinds hospital--one of the newest and most beautiful in the Twin Cities.
Best of luck during this exciting time!

OBGYN West is great. Dr. Grootwasink is smartest Dr. I have ever met..."the kind that sees something obsure once in his career and then applies it a decade later" a nurse practitioner there told me...and she is right!

I can very very highly recommend Dr. Deborah Krahl with Aspen Medical Clinic. She works out of the Bloomington and Hopkins clinics :). She's knowledgeable, dedicated to her patients, and specifically went to a small OB/GYN practice so that she could deliver more of her patients.

She was my doctor at a very large practice, and was unfortunately not able to deliver my son when it was his time to be born. We were both upset - but that didn't stop me from following her on to her new clinic - it wasn't exactly her fault!

However - she listened throughout my pregnancy, addressed all concerns - and didn't talk down to me. We disagreed on a couple of points, and were able negotiate agreements that we were *both* happy with when issues came up. You have to love a doctor who will respect when a patient has feelings on specific subjects!

Enjoy your pregnancy!! Congratulations!
