Seeking OB GYN Who Cares

I still haven't decided which hospital to go to, so now I have a new question. I want an OB GYN that will do a transvaginal ultrasound right away, to make sure everything is ok (I had a miscarriage last time, so I'm concerned). I know some places only do one ultrasound much later, and that's all you get. I really don't want a place like that. The place I went in Maplewood when I was pregnant with my son was one of those one-ultrasound places, but the place I went in Hudson was great, I got an ultrasound every time i went in, and it really seemed like the doctor cared. I'm in south Minneapolis, and would like a place that's close (S. Minneapolis, Edina, uptown, or St. Louis Park would be ideal). Thanks!

What can I do next?

I went to Park Nicollet Midwives in St Louis Park (its called Meadowbrook, it is located at the Methodist hospital) and loved them. They are very caring, spend so much time with you. I had Kaisa Johnson and she was amazing. Hope this helps!

I see a really great clinic called Obstectrics Gynecology and Infertility. I have had 2 ultrasounds and I am 12 weeks. I won't have another one until 24 weeks, unless I request it. They did one at 6 weeks and again at 8 to make sure the baby is growing appropriately. They are a believer in Progesterone suppositories/shots if you have low progesterone levels to prevent miscarriages (which some clinics don't do). They are really caring, both the doctors and nurse practioners. They are also very knowledgable since they deal with Infertility patients. They have a practice at West Health in Plymouth and in Edina off of France. The doctor's deliver at North Memorial and Fairview Southdale hospitals. They come very highly recommended from me. I also recieved them as a recommendation from the Mamasource board. Hope this helps!

I went to the Burnsville office of OB/GYN Specialists (they have an Edina office too, I think), and they were wonderful. There was one doc in the group I didn't particularly like, but he wasn't all that bad, really - just different personalities.

I had an u/s at 10 weeks to date the pregnancy - they didn't even peep when I asked for it, just made me aware that insurance might not cover it (which they did). I didn't get an u/s every time, but I got 2 from their office & they checked fetal heartbeat each time. I'm sure if you're concerned, they'd be willing to give you the reassurance you need/want. I have a feeling if they'd had concerns with finding the heartbeat, I would have had an u/s right away.

They are wonderful people - I can't say enough nice things about them. The doc I see regularly has been pestering me to have another kid for the past 3 years since I "am so good at having babies!" :) It was a funny thing to hear, but at least I knew he remembered that I had an uneventful pregnancy & very quick birth.

Good luck!

Hi M.,

I am so sorry about your previous miscarriage, I hope everything works out GREAT with this pregnancy!! I too had a miscarriage before getting pregnant with our daughter Montanna (will be 4 in July). I had the most awesome OB with my pregnancy, you will need a referral from your primary care or such to go there but it is worth it if you can get in. I went to Minnesota Perinatal Physicians at United Hospital, but there is a sister clinic at Abbott (I have not been to). I saw David Burrus MD, but all the doctors there are great too. Because I was so high risk with lots of complications I saw most of the doctors in the clinic at least once or many more times LOL! Some of the ones I really liked were... Diana Danilenko MD (did my emergency C-section), Subhashini Ladella MD (I saw her the most when I wasn't seeing Dr. Burrus), Richard Bendel MD (did my amino). There is so much more I could tell you about them, but here you can check out the website and see if they would be helpful for you. http://www.unitedhospital.com/ahs/united.nsf/page/perinat...

I did have ultrasounds everytime I went in for an appointment to check for the heartbeat and such, plus the "big" ultrasounds that are more indepth every few weeks or so until Montanna was born 6 weeks early.

Email me anytime if you want to chat!!

Generally your insurance company dictates how many ultrasounds you get. The doctor has to have a medical reason to justify multiple ultrasounds (they are not cheap). I had several with all of my pregnancies. I was high risk and had unexplained bleeding, 2 miscarriages, 2 premature girls and my son was born May 3rd at 37 weeks. I am also a nurse and know that, unfortunatly, the insurance you have will very often dictate your medical care. Good luck.

My family doc in St. Paul is great! They have an ultrasound right in the office and he refers patients to the hospital ultrasound whenever there is a question about the baby's safety (lessened movement, bleeding, pain, ect.). He may be a bit out of your way, but he is very knowledgable and INCREDIBLY personable. I delivered with him with my first baby. Now I live in Bloomington and decided to make the drive to have him with my second! To top it all off, he goes to all of his births!! (unless he is out of town, which rarely happens) Most places just send whoever is on-call. His name is Dr. Larkin at the Health East clinic on Rice St.
Best of luck finding a good doc.

I go to Southdale OBGYN. They have two offices...one in Edina and one in Burnsville. Lots of doctors, so you are likely to find someone that you like there.

I also suffered a miscarriage, so the next time I got pregnant, they did two Hcg blood tests (to make sure the numbers were rising properly), and two ultrasounds (one at 6 weeks, one at 8). So, I'm sure if you have concerns, they would be able to help you. My insurance covered all of that, thankfully.

Good Luck!

I would highly recommend the midwife practice at Fairview Riverside Women's Clinic. They are willing to do early ultrasounds and they told me I could come in to listen for the heartbeat if ever I was nervous. They are fabulous all the way around! If you would prefer an OB over a midwife, I would still recommend the Women's Clinic. I can't tell you if they'll do early ultrasounds, but I have heard good things about them in general.
