Seeking Advice on What to Eat to Avoid Nausea, Good Exercise Ideas, Too

I am looking for advice! When you were nauseous, what worked for you? I am finding out that avoiding food makes me sicker! Also, anything snug, like a bra, or waistline will make me feel gross too.
I am used to working out a few times a week, and now, I have to FORCE myself to. Do any of you use at-home low impact aerobics? Can you recommend a few?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice. My doc had me take a unisom and b6 together in the evenings, and still I was queasy. The Saltines, maternity clothing, and more bland foods has really helped. I still wish I was motivated more, but since I started eating less more often, I've felt much better. Thanks again, all!

a supplement - Ginger B6 worked WONDERS for me. I used to buy it at Seattle Super Supplements - I imagine it can be bought at most vitamin or health food stores. I didn't have any nausea in the first trimester when I used that.

I am 17 weeks pregnant and still not eating as I am suppose to due to nausea, one thing I have tried is to take a cup of juice with me to bed, occasionally when I feel nauseous I would take a sip and go back to sleep, I found that I would salivate less and my stomach is not so queasy anymore because the juice sorta act as a stabilizer for the gastric acid I was producing and making me nauseous..

eating crystallized ginger made my nausea feel better. You can get it in most food stores I think, but for sure at Fred Meyer and Marlene's (tacoma). Also ginger snaps and ginger ale (sensing the trend?) Crackers in general were on my nightstand all the time and I wouldn't even roll over in the morning without one or two saltines.

For workouts, I like this website...it's a 20 minutes workout you can do in the home with what you have around you (yourself primarily!) the site is www.realage.com/WorkoutCenter/fitness/fpentry.aspx also, if you have On Demand from comcast, they have a lot of exercise TV and there is yoga and low impact stuff, for free. good luck!

Oh the joys of being barely pregnant. I was very sick for both of mine. Ceral just seemed to set easy on my stomach, my favorites were corn flakes, cheerios, kix and mini wheats. Try to find something that sounds good...you have to eat for you baby. Leave crackers and a glass of water by your bed. Eat three of four right when you get up, then sip on some water. Then get up and try to eat something. Luckly for you this part of being pregnant doesn't last long. You asked about aerobics. I did alot of walking with both of mine. It may help you feel better to get out and get some fresh air. It is a great excerise and is as low impact as you can get. I lost my baby fat very quickly and my labors weren't hard either. I know it is because I walked so much. With my second I also took swim aerobics, I needed something to do while my oldest was in swim lessons. Anyway I hope I helped you atleast a little bit. Good Luck!! Enjoy being pregnant it will be over before you know it. Take lots of pictures you and your baby will enjoy looking at them later on.

Ugh! I totally feel your pain. I was unable to eat ANYTHING until last week (I'm 11 weeks now) and too am on child #2 which leaves little time for sickness and choosing foods. I found that I could keep fruit smoothies (mix milk/soy milk with frozen yogurt/yogurt and frozen blueberries and 1/2 banana in the blender) and Luna bars (they are made specifically for women and have all kinds of protein and added vitamins including folic acid) down. You can find the Luna bars in the health food section of grocery stores by the other protein bars. At 9ish weeks I started forcing myself to eat a bit of protein, usually an egg, and I found that if I got that protein in the morning I made it through the day much more easily.

I also started wearing only pants with a stretchy waist which helped with that uncomfortable feeling. You could probably get a loose sports bra to take the pressure off your rib cage too. As for excercise, I just walk. Or try a pregnancy pilates CD. Even taking a walk is hard right now, but it sure does give you energy once you get out there.

Hang in there! And I'll be really interested to see other responses as I too could use some help.

Hi A.!
Oh, I miss being pregnant. Except for the fact that I gained so much weight! Anyways, when I started getting morning sickness I did a bunch of research to find out the best way to help aleviate it. I found out that if I took a B-6 vitamin with my prenatal vitamins before I go to bed at night, with a little snack, that it CURED my morning sickness all together in about 3-4 days. If you try it, let me know if it works for you!

I kept a little baggie of Cheerios (various flavors) with me at all times. At the slightest sign of queasiness I would munch on those, the sick feeling would go away and I never once threw up due to morning sickness. I also read to keep some plain crackers by your bed with some water and to eat those before you got out of bed.

This is what helps lessen the nausea when I was pregnant. What worked for me was cold food and no meat, if I could smell it it was off limits (lol). I would eat oranges out of the fridge, snack on yogurt and at night I would try to eat cottage cheese. From what I have heard if you eat a high protein snack before you go to bed it's supposed to help you not feel so nauseous in the morning. Fresh fruit really worked for me just so I could keep something down. Also, I suggest eating jello in the morning (especially if you know you are going to get sick) its not so h*** o* the body when it comes back up lol.

Peppermint candy canes are good for nausea. Anything peppermint, even tea. I always use it if I've got it, it works great.

I remember those days all too well. I took a "tube" of saltines with me everywhere I went and just ate one or two at a time throughout the day. You may want to try some of those shakes for diabetics...not diet shakes, but ones that are meant to supplement people with diabetes, I think that they are called Ensure....as far as everything feeling tight and making your feel gross, totally had that and lived in overalls for awhile. It helped immensely, b/c the only place that there is something with any pressure is on your shoulders and that isn't really pressure. I also bought front closure bras, which helped too, but I am not very well endowed, so I could do that easily. I also drank lots of Gatorade and that made me feel better for some reason, never really knew why, but I craved it all the time and so I drank it. Good luck and feel better.

I am about 8 weeks pregnant with my second child, and find that if I keep something in my stomach at all times, it helps with the nausea. Even if it is only a handful of crackers, or a yogurt. I get the same way if I don't eat. I just feel sicker and sicker and nothing sounds good.

I was fortunate enough not to have any real "morning sickness" issues with the exception of early morning nausea. I found that as long as I ate something, generally bland, I would be okay. I worked with kids and a lot of times thought I could make it to work and eat breakfast with them if I was running late, which was always a mistake, because worrying about throwing up on the freeway is not fun. Plain cheerios in milk or dry, and saltines seemed to work best for me. And if the smell of anything makes you nauseous, don't eat it!

As for the waist band thing, someone recommended overalls which is good, but also try a simple house dress, they are very basic and comfy. Motherhood maternity has had some cute ones (they are easier to come by in the summer) or if you are inclined to sewing or know someone who is, there are very easy patterns and then you can pick the style and fabric. I don't have suggestions for the bra thing, but hopefully taking some pressure off your tummy will make the bra seem less bothersome?

The only thing I can recommend for exercise is swimming but if you have to do it at home I realize that doesn't really help, sorry.Good luck!

When I was pregnant I found that plain, buttered white toast worked for my nausea, and getting that little bit into my stomach made it possible for me to eat more later in the day.

As for exercise, I found walking to be the simplest thing to stick with.

And if your bras feel too snug, you may need a different size. You also may just be either bloated or oversensitive (I went thru the same stuff).

All these advice on the crackers and bread is great. The ginger tea advice is good. (That's pretty much a homeopathic way of treating stomach aches and nausea) I would lay off the aerobics and not force yourself into anything. Listen to your mind and body. Swimming and yoga is really good for exercise. You have received great advice.

I had the same probs ginger tea is good I ate turkey sand. because they were low in flavor and smell and also cucumbers if you are having trouble motivating right now you may not want to push aerobics till a little later when you feel better they do have prenatal palates and yoga which are good and when you start to feel better belly dancing is supposed to be really good for you. good luck it will get easier the second trimester.

I had morning sickness and nausea with all my pregnancies, so I can sympathize. Most of the time the only things that worked for me were saltine crackers, with or without the salt and almonds. As for exercise walking is always good. and loose fitting clothes. Hope that helps.
