Ok I only had morning sickness once so I didn't try anything...but when I was preg I got food poisoning on Thanksgiving and I also got the rotavirus (don't let anyone tell you that adults are immune)...anyways the Dr prescribed me Zolfran...it is expensive but it worked and it doesn't make you drowsy!

I hope you feel better soon.

I was deathly sick with my first baby so I was on a lot of medications.

But these things did help a little:

Chewing long lasting flavored bubble gum.
Sucking on Lolly pops/hard candy
Crackers
Small meals

Stay away from:

Red sauces
Acidic foods and drinks
Avoid strong smells
Avoid over eating
Avoid heavy meals such as steak
Avoid too much lettuce...takes a long time to digest and WILL come back up.

Note: Be aware of the texture of what you are eating and is it going to be easy to come back up! Crab is horrible when coming back up just let me tell you!!!

Ginger-ale or ginger cookies worked for me. I tried the candied ginger too, but it was too strong and made me sick.

Good luck, and congratulations!

V.,

first, congratulations... you are in for the best ride of your life! being a mommy is amazing! i had my first in october, and she is already almost 10 months old... i can't believe it! i totally know the boat you are in. i was so sick the first 17 weeks of my pregnancy. mine lasted all day everyday, and i lost tons of weight... i know its no fun. but just when i thought i couldn't do it ANYMORE, it just stopped one day. i know right now it feels like you'll be sick for the rest of your life, but it really does get better. sadly, there really isn't anything that "cured" the sickness for me... but some things did help:

-make sure you're eating about every two hours. i would get really nauseous suddenly if i waited too long to eat.

-saltines, pretzels, potato chips, french fries... anything salty will help cut it

-chick-fil-a lemonade was my saving grace! regular minute maid or country time lemonade is too sweet, but chick-fil-a's is super sour and it really helped. i lived off of it.

-ginger ale, ginger snaps... they even have ginger altoids... ginger helps calm your tummy.

-sometimes when you get that nausea-attack you get almost hot and tingly... there are these pressure points on the inside of your wrists, and someone told me to run cold water over them. so when i would feel like i was going to throw up, i would turn the faucet on cold and hold my wrists under it. it actually did help... also to hold a cold wet rag or ice pack or something on the back of your neck... it cools you down and kinda helps with the nausea.

-try taking your pre-natal vitamin at night before you go to bed instead of in the morning... they have so many vitamins and minerals that can make you nauseous... mine definitely did!

-eat something small before you "wake up" in the morning... keep some saltines or pretzels or something by your bed and nibble a little before you get up and start moving around.

-no orange juice in the morning without food!!! especially with your pre-natals! something about all that vitamin C will make you fell sick.

-since its summer, and so hot, its easy to get dehydrated and over-heated and that will make you sick, too... drink lots of cold water and take it easy.

-also... i found that the "boost" chocolate protein shakes were great... almost the only thing i could keep down besides applesauce and saltines. smoothies from smoothie king or something like that were a good way to get some nutrients, too. but the protien shakes were recommended by my doctor since i wasn't able to eat anything. and they are yummy, too... like chocolate milk.

i was so worried that my baby was going to be mal-nourished because i couldn't keep anything (and i mean not ANYTHING) down, but remember, your baby is going to take all the nutrients he/she needs from your body, so as long as you're taking your pre-natals, you'll be fine. you're the one that's going to suffer... the baby will be great! :)

i know its hard, but this will be over before you know it! hang in there... i hope some of this gives you some relief. please let me know if you have any more questions.

good luck,
S.

Pop-ice's and other popsicles are great. I am even getting sick on water, and anything carbonated gives me horrible gas pains. Chewing on the ice works well though and the flavor makes it easier. I am also eating lots of bread... the good bakery stuff. It's about the only thing that doesn't make me sick. Good luck, and congratulations!

Sea-Bands helped me a lot. They are wristbands that put pressure on a pressure point on your wrist. They look really dorky but they helped me get through the day. I bought them at CVS. Also, anything with ginger helped me. Ginger tea, ginger ale, ginger altoids and ginger snaps helped the most.

this worked for both my mom and i. hot chocolate and lightly buttered toast. both she and i were sick around the clock...mornigng sickness my tush...lol. it was nice and comforting for me too. also, as sick as this will sound, but if i got sick anyways it didn't taste as awful coming back up, and that also made it easier for me. i know half the time i ate anything, i was also thinking of how bad it was gonna be coming back up and i think that made it even worse. but anyways, the hot chocolate and toast helped settle my tummy alot.

I had extreme morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidarum) with my son and the only thing I was able to keep down besides ginger ale and saltines was a smoothie I found on some morning sickness site. One cup of each of the following ingredients in a blender: apple juice, plain yogurt, vanilla soy milk, frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, peaches whatever you prefer) and a tbsp of honey to sweeten. It was yummy, had protein, and really perked me up.

This time I'm having little, to no morning sickness, but when I am sick, I eat only really cold food. Cold food doesn't really have a smell so it's easier to get it down. I usually eat a vanilla yogurt or a slice of cheese. Anything that has some protein in it. Since this is your first baby, and you don't have to get out of bed immediately and attend to another child, I'd keep some crackers by the bed and eat that before you get up. Oh and try the preggie pop drops...they've worked for me. You can only get them at motherhood or destination maternity though. I've heard vitamin B6 can help too, but ask your doctor first.

Congratulations!!

I had bad morning sickness for about the first 16 weeks. What worked for me was: 1) keeping gingerale ( room temp & semi-flat ) and saltines by my bed. Before I got out of bed, I would drink about 1/2 a glass with a few crackers. 2) keeping food in my stomach throughout the day, even if it was just a few crackers or something, but keeping my stomach from getting "empty" helped to keep the naseau at bay 3) I kept those starlight peppermints with me always, b/c if for someone reason I did get to a point where my stomach got empty & I started feeling sick, sucking on 1 or 2 of those helped until I could get some food. and lastly, 4) I wore a motion sickness bracelet that I picked up at CVS or someplace like that.

Between all those things,I was able to manage through it.

Good Luck!

Hi V.! Congratulations on your pregnancy...how exciting! I feel for you, as I also had extreme "morning" sickness (which lasted all day!) with both pregnancies. I think the key is to try to keep something in your tummy by eating what YOU can keep down. Every body is so different, and what may work for one person may not work for another in this area. I would sometimes find The Food that I could keep down, and it would be something different the very next day (my poor hubby...I sure kept him on his toes!). I did find that starchy foods, in small amounts, were helpful...saltines, cereal, potatoes. Also, some form of protein worked for me...I'd try to get a yogurt down each morning/afternoon. The other suggestions for smoothies are great, also. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi V.,

Congratulations!

I suffered for 23 weeks with extreme morning sickness (or all day sickness as I liked to call it) and I tried everything. Fortunately my doctor told me it was okay to take a half of a B6 vitamin with half of a tablet of Unisom (Unisom is okay to take during pregnancy because the active ingredient is what's in Benadryl. I don't know what that combination does together but I would take it at nighttime and I would be able to get some relief when nothing else would work. It definitely helped to get the nausea to subside for awhile at a time. You might ask your doctor.

Hey V.,
I was nauseous alot with my second pregnancy and believe it or not, coke and apple juice (not together clearly) really helped. Also, my sister is 10 weeks pregnant with her first baby right now and she has morning sickness much worse than I did. She said that a friend gave her a preggy lollypop and she said that not only did it taste good but it helped her too. I think you can get them at maternity stores or just go online and look. Good luck. It will pass soon so keep that in mind.

Here are some ideas that worked for me: mint gum (Orbitz mojito is my fav), sucker or hard candy, juice, drink cold water, deep relaxing breaths, calm music. Keep in mind that your body is doing this for a reason and it'll be over before you know it!

Good luck!

Pretty much you have to keep it simple. This is the time when you discover that foods you have hated in the past all of the sudden have an appeal to you. And food that you love might be the worse thing you can possibly swallow. But, like another comment said, avoid strong smells. I wouldn't go to restaurants at this time. It's only for a little while. I've always been allergic to eggs, but when I was pregnant, during my first weeks, I craved them so bad, and my body was able to handle it, after those few weeks, I tried it again, I was all of the sudden allergic again, go figure! It's one of the things about pregnancy that you will never forget, so have fun with it!

I saw someone mentioned ginersnaps--those worked the best for me to but you have to be sure and get ones with real ginger---they have them at Walmart but you will probably have more luck with genuine ginger at Whole FOods or Central Market

Bless your heart, I feel your pain. Here are a few things that worked for me,,,,, hot tea, crackers (saltines), Sprite (clear carbonated drinks). Do not eat a alot of greasy or heavy things at dinner, and try to get a lot of water in you before bed to avoid dehydration. Hope this helps you, trust me it will all get better and be worth it in the end!!

Congratulations. The morning sickness will pass. Hang in there. Raw carrots sometimes worked for me. Other times, peanut butter.
And then there's always saltine crackers.

Time is really the only thing that will make it go away. Just eat what you can stand and avoid things with strong odors. We had to banish eggs in our house for the enture length of both of my pregnancies because the smell would make me nauseous. I also ate/drank a lot of fresh smoothies. Not the store-bought kind you get in the yogurt section. Real ones, from Smoothie King, or made at home in the blender with fruit and yogurt.

It helps to keep SOMETHING in your stomach because you'll be more sick feeling if you're empty. Snack often. I kept sprite or a water bottle and graham crackers or cereal bars by the bed for first thing in the morning, or for in the middle of the night when you get up to go to the bathroom.
And you probably know by now that it's not just "morning" sickness. It lasts all day! But it's often worse in the morning because it's been a long time since you've last eaten. That's why the middle of the night snack is a good idea.

Congrats!

Congrats new mommy to be! I didn't throw up throughout my pregnancy, but I dry-heaved (which was almost as bad) all the time, w/o warning. The only thing that helped me was to eat a light snack every 2 hours. I've heard of ginger being good as well. Hope this helps!
