Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions for my daughters cough. She has had a very bad cough for the last 3 days to the point that it is waking her from her naps. I have tried the humidifer, saline nasal drops. I have given her some tylenol for a low-grade fever (controlled with it). I called the doctor office but they said that as long a she does not have a high fever, loss of apetite or breathing problems just to cont. what I am doing. Does anyone else have any other suggestions, maybe some homeopathic recepies? It breaks my heart to see her miserable.

What can I do next?

L.,

We liked the Johnson and Johnson Vapo Bath - there's a generic brand too. It's a bath "bubble" that you add and it has some menthol to help open them up. Or try taking a shower with her before bedtime to see if you can sit in the steam for awhile to help loosen things up before bed. (If it seems like congestion.)

It sounds like you're doing everything right, just hang in there. I agree with a prior post that if it seems worse at night, see if you can add a pillow UNDER her mattress to give her crib a little more of an incline. We did this plus rolled up receiving blankets to "wedge" our child on either side so she wouldn't slide. You could put her to sleep in a baby seat or car seat for a few nights too. This was recommended to us when our baby had reflux.

Best of luck!

Sara

Has she had a cold lately? It is possible that this is post nasal drip, as horrible as that may seem. If she is okay when she is awake, you could try elevating her head just a bit. Even raising her an inch should be enough without endngering her. I did this with my d whe nshe was in a bassinet.

If it's really bad and is interferring with her sleeping, the Dr. Sears website has recommendations under the medicine cabinet heading for cold and cough medication dosages for infants. Most of them are now labeled to say they're not recommended for kids under 4 or 6, but he still gives dosages I believe starting at 6 months. My sister's doctor gave her a similar list.

Okay I know this sounds crazy but I put vicks vapor rub on my kids feet and put cotton socks on. It takes about 15 minutes and they stop coughing. I don't know why or how but it works really well. I think for a 7 month old you will have to use the baby vicks vapor rub as the normal one is for 2 years and older.
