Removing Silly Putty?

Hello All ~

I'm really hoping somebody can help me! We got my daughter some of that color changing Silly Putty. She is usually very careful with these things, but this one time... she got it on some clothes and I can't get it off. I've tried simply pulling it off, putting ice on it, getting it cold by putting it in the freezer, putting water on it, scraping it off, rubbing it off... none of it has really worked. I've been able to remove some of it, but there is still a thin coating. I do not want to throw away what it got on, so I'm coming to all of you for any advice or tips you might have.

Thanks for any help you can give me!
~J.

Hi J., My sister introduced me to a product called Awesome. You can find it at most any dollar store. It has saved my 5 yr. olds clothes more times than I can count. Just spray it on, rub a little bit and wash.
Hope this helps.

Well, our secret weapon is WD40....I don't know specifically if ti works on silly putty, and it might ruin the clothes? But WD40 gets crayon off walls...and just about anything else... If you use it on clothing, I would immediately dish soap on the spot and warm water to remove the WD40....

We had this situation as well. Try this link: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006051012324
and see if it works for you. Can't tell you how many times I just type in "how to remove gunk" type questions into Google and find great info. What a resource we have out there online!
Hope this helps and you can get back to belly dancing, fire breathing and drumming . . . far more fun than removing silly putty!

J.,

Have you tried anything like WD40 or hairspray? I know WD40 gets out grease stains (like butter or oil) and hairspray works like a charm on ballpoint pen.

Here is what Heloise says: "Using a dull knife, gently scrape off as much of the putty as you can. Then spray a lubricating oil over the area and wait a bit. Spray again and use cotton balls to lift the stain. If anything remains, saturate a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol, blot the area and rinse with water. Still some residue? Apply a dry-cleaning solvent, then launder as you normally would".

I have had my own trouble with silly putty, so I'm anxious to hear the replies.

So the things I have seen that work.

1 - Goof Off
2 - Purell Hand Santizer
3 - WD-40

Alll of course followed by warm/hot soap water.

Good Luck!

J.,
A product called Disolve-It works great. I know you can pick it up at Wal-Mart stores, it's gentle and it smells good. It takes some time-soak & scrub a few times. I used it when my grandson left silly putty on the seat in my car during the summer. It had really melted on!

you may have to live with the stain.. perhaps you can cover it with a pretty patch or something?? I couldn't figure out anything to get it out of my son's clothes when this happened to me.... I learned that clothes are clothes... there will be more! One less thing to wash if you get rid of it. I sure hope it wasn't her special Christmas dress!

I have never had to remove silly puddy, but my husband was a roofer and worked with all kinds of glues, asphault and tars. I started using that orange hand cleaner on his clothes. You can get a creamy one (because most have granuals that may harm your fabric) at the dollar store in Mac. Or at the auto parts stores. You just rub it in and wash like everything else. If it is ground in, an old tooth brush works well to work it into the fabric. It never ran the colors in his shirts, but you may want to try it somewhere hidden first. I have used the actual 'lava' brand hand cleaner on his pants and shirts, but you take a small risk. They clean the sticky stuff out of washers and dryers too. Good Luck hope it works. :)

Salt! I use Sea salt lightly sprayed with water and scrub the helk out of it. It also works for playdought, gum or that stick stuff off the back of stickers. It also works if this stuff gets in your carpet!

Hi J...did you ever get the silly putty stain out??? I'm
J.....I'm new to Mamasource, so I was scrolling back and saw
your request. I use something called SOLUMEL...ever heard of it? It works great and it's non-chemical so it's safe around little kids, unlike WD40 or some of those other cleaners from the dollar store.
Look forward to hearing from you!

People already said this but I agree with ironing it. This works for wax as well. Put something in between the putty and the iron (paper bag) and it should come right off. Good luck!

You might try ironing from the other side of the garment. Put a towel down, then the putty-side on the towel and iron the other side. The heat may transfer the silly putty onto the towel or make it pliable enough to rub off.
Good luck!

Try this. Put a brown paper bag over the silly putty and iron it. If this fails to do the trick you might try asking the company for their suggestions on the web site.

Good luck
