Panties in a Bunch

Hi there! I have a question for all of you with daughters. My 5 year old has recently had a BIG problem wearing panties/underwear whatever you call them in your household :)
She is complaining that they are "sticking" or just "touching" her front region. (that's what she calls it). She wiggles, pulls, complains, whines, tries on 15 different pairs and nothing is right. I have several sizes of underwear in her drawer for her to choose from. One day the larger ones work and another day not. She asks if she can go "commando" (that's what I call it, not her) but I say that it is not sanitary due to the fact that she is in skirts most of the time.
Is this just a crazy phase that she is going through and we just have to grin and ignore it?
Has anyone else had their daughters do anything like this?
Thank you for your advice!
S.

I say boys boxer briefs or girls boyshorts too.

I, like Rachel D, was (and still am) a tomboy!!! I prefer the boyshorts with the elastic around the thigh as well as the waist.

I personally know that if I don't have the elastic around the thigh, my nether regions get hungry and start to eat my undies!!! NOT COMFORTABLE!

S.:

Try the boxer shorts...make sure they are 100% cotton - she may have a sensitivity issue to synthetic materials.

I LOVE going commando!!! If she wants to do that - make sure she has a pair of "biker shorts" that's what I put on under my skirts and dresses...just in case! :)

Any way - try several different styles - boxer briefs (I THINK they have style for young girls...) have her go with you so she can look at the different styles and see what she likes....

GOOD LUCK!!

Maybe biker shorts under her skirts instead of the undies...or boyshorts. Good luck!

Not my daughters, but I was that kid ;) I really just wanted to wear boxers r boy shorts because that' what my little brothers wore (I was the biggest tomboy!!)... Try boy shorts, or even boxers (if you can't find girlie boxers, just shop in the boys section)... Also, make sure her pants/shorts aren't too tight in the crotch area... I know you said she wears skirts, but maybe on bad pant experience is the culprit here? Is the area red or anything? Maybe she's got something more going on than just discomfort from the panties. OR what about letting her pick out her own panties? She may be more prone to wear them if SHE picks them. Good luck!

My daughter has her panties in a bunch, her socks in a whad, her pants in a twist, sleeves in a bined, the list goes on... :)

I deal with it the best I can. She changes her clothing item a billion times till its right, or screams and throws a fit cause her sock is touching her toe wrong.

I can't really offer advice, but I can offer sympathy. Hopefully you can swith underwear brands and find something that fits better. I buy Hanes bikini briefs for my daughter, they are a little thicker and fuller, plus they are cotton so they seem to lay against the skin better.

Make sure that she is rinsing really, really well after her bath or shower. She could have some external irritation that she's confusing with her underwear bothering her.
Try a different type of underwear all together. It might sound weird, but I actually wear little boy boxer briefs. They may make them for women, but the Hane's little boy size fits me. They don't ride up, there are no panty lines. When we were moving, I found a package of unopened ones that my son had long since outgrown and I tried them on. I was sold.
You know you can't let her go pantiless with skirts.
I would rule out a rash or irritation and check to see if the seam in the underwear is touching where she says it bothers her.

"Little Suzie came in from playing outside and had an ice cream cone. Her mother asked her where she got it and she said the little neighborhood boys gave it to her...all she had to do was climb a tree and they gave her the ice cream.
Suzie's mother said, 'Suzie! Those little boys just wanted you to climb the tree so they could see your underwear!'
Suzie said, 'I know that, Momma, but I tricked them. I wasn't wearing any.'"

Best wishes.

She may be dealing with some sensory integration problems. Is she hypersensitive in any other areas? If so, an assessment by an occupational therapist might be helpful.

If it's just undies, I second everyone else's comments: try leggings, boxers, or anything else that covers the subject. At our house, the rule is "cover your butt". As long as this rule is met in some fashion, I'm satisfied.

I suffered personally with this issue growing up. Constantly needing to "pick out" my undies from my "front region" I hated it, it was aweful and all my mom ever did was yell at me for doing it and telling me to stop. I remember having the issue well into 5th grade with no relief. I honestly cannot tell you what might have helped or what caused it to stop. I know they kept brining me in thinking I had an infection or some other issue but no luck. I know that I snuck out of the house many of times commando cause it felt so much better! if you can help her find some way around it I would try because I know I wish I could have found a way to stop. Don't have the issue anymore and couldn't be more happy about it. Boxers might be worth a try, I do remember my most happy days were when I didn't wear undies at all!

I agree with Shane, make sure she is rinsing clean. Sometimes left over soap can make things itchy down there. Also you may want to consider changing laundry soap. My daughter is extremely sensitive to Tide - cant use it at all.

My 5 y/o will 'sneak' her panties off before getting dressed so that she's not wearing them, then I don't notice until later LOL She also complains of her vulva being itchy often - with and without panties - but no odor or discharge. My daughter's underwear fits her fine too... so it's not size that is the problem. I don't know ;)

Make sure they're 100% cotton - maybe she's supersensitive to synthetic material. My kids hate anything that has a seam or itches - so socks, underwear, any clothing that touches their skin has to be itch free - and that can mean anything. It is not easy!

Could you get her some of those spandexy sort of shorts to wear under her skirts/dresses? With those, she could go commando. They're mid thigh to upper thigh length (Not quit sure for a 5 year old) and on the order of boys' boxer briefs. Many girls like to just wear skirts, even when we don't think it's warm enough (I can relate-they fit a lot better than many pants, but I can't stand being cold, where it doesn't seem to bother young children) and when they're that young and younger, they're very active indoors and out and really need more covering than just underwear provide, especially at circle time at school, when they're expected to sit 'criss cross, applesauce'!
Good luck, 'panties in a bunch' is right up there along with 'sock bumps' and tags as far as clothing annoyances go...
