Newborn with Hiccups - Lisle,IL

I have a 1-week old baby girl. She gets hiccups once or twice a day and sometimes they seem pretty strong -- although they don't typically last more than 10 or 15 minutes. Is there anything I can do to help her get rid of them? It probably bothers me more than it does her and I'm not worried about her health...just curious if there is a trick to help relieve her.

What can I do next?

My daughter got them really bad...we ask her DR and he said babies will cough, sneeze, and hiccup to clear their throats. I would give her water and pat her back which seems to help. "What to expect in the first year" is a great book on a bunch of general items...they say hiccups don't bothers babies at all.

A tiny bit of gripe water in a syringe usually did the trick for my son. It's water with fennel and ginger--you can get it at the drugstore. It's supposed to be for colic I guess but I always used it for hiccups.

We had this issue too.

If you're not nursing, you can give a very small bottle of formula because that works just as well as the nursing. Just a couple of sips to stop the hiccups.

Otherwise, not a big deal. They sound really bad but don't bother them much.

I second the nursing. My second had hiccups all the time and that always did the trick.

Yes, the hiccups will bother you more. Nursing is good. They will eventually subside. My daughter even used to get hiccups in utero. Weird sensation!

Congratulations!

Hello Erin,

This is pretty normal. This happens when baby is digesting food and system is not setup. It will subside with time.

Congrats on your new baby!!
