Hiccups - Is This Normal?

My daughter had hiccups quite often (several times a day) when she was an infant. As new parents we were also concerned, but it's totally normal. Every book and dr I've ever spoken to has said it's no big deal and my daughter, who is now 13 months, rarely gets them any more.

Oh God, that brings back memories. Our son (who was VERY colicky) used to get them all the time. In my belly and then when he was born. Nothing wrong with them, except that he used to SCREAM when he'd get them. He hated it. AND, it always seemed that they came RIGHT after the last feeding before bed!

Pregnant now and the little guy in there gets them all the time, too. I can only HOPE he doesn't hate them as much as his brother.

This is totally normal. I had the same concern when my son was an infant and the dr. told me that if he wasn't getting hick ups we should be concerned, but hick ups are a good thing in babies. My son would get hick ups every time we made him laugh regardless of what time of day it was or if he had just finished eating or not.

My daughter gets them all the time. The doctor said it was normal. She gets them at least once a day. Dosen't matter if she just ate now or not.

I actually remember having them when I was 3 and 4 yrs old and I don't recall them bothering me at such a young age. My great-grandmother (who babysat me) always said it meant I was growing. My daughter had them from time to time, but not TOO frequently... seemed like she would go through phases with them.

All four of my kids had this. It truely doesn't bother them as much as it did me, and I am sure you. My second daughter had it like this until she was three!!! One thing that may help is to play with him for just a bit and stop. If he doesn't get all worked up he won't get them, USUALLY. It's hard because they finally interact with you and you have to limit the giggles. But he'll out grow it. I actually miss it! LOL

My daughter kept me up at night with her hiccups before she was even born!
She was a hiccupy newborn. It never seemed to bother her, even when they were so bad that the soft spot in the middle of her collar bone would get like sucked in. It made hubby and I crazy, as it looked and sounded painful.
At 8 months she still does it from time to time, but nowhere near as much as when she was tiny.
From what I hear it is totally normal.

My 18 mo old still gets them when she really gets laughing! I wouldn't worry!

Just like those that posted, I too, had them when my daughter was in my tummy. I called her "thumper." Dr. said it's completely normal, especially when they are newborns. Dr. said they tend to get them more often when they are newborns and then they start to get less frequent as they get older. And, it's true. My daughter is 9 months now and she gets them once in awhile, but not as much as when she was younger. Dr. said they don't hurt the little ones.

My little peanut used to have hiccupps all the time when she was just a bun in the oven. It was so funny to be sitting at my desk at work, and suddenly my stomach would be having these little 'tics' when she would start hiccuping. My OB assured me that was normal. As a newborn she continued to hiccup a lot, and again my pediatrician assured me it was normal. Even now, as a rambunctious, curious, naughty toddler, she still hiccups when she laughs too much. In this case I give her water and stop the frolickng for a few minutes until the hiccups cease. So all in all, hiccupps are normal, and decrease with age.

It's due to an immature phrenic nerve, which matures with time.
