I have no clue what the "in" thing is, and I definitely don't want to look like I haven't a clue. I'm going to a formal wedding in VT next weekend. I'm wearing a forest green long skirt with matching shirt/jacket type top. I'm planning to wear black heals, what color/ type stocking do I wear (sheer black, opaque black, suntan, nude (I think nude is a no no)? Help! TIA!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

For those that are interested, I've decided to go with a taupe or as close to skin tone (not suntan where it's too dark and not nude where that can be too light in color). I've got 4 or 5 pairs packed (that's the only thing packed right now and I leave for VT in the morning, LOL!). Thanks for all of the responses ladies!!!

If the heels are open toed all you need is a good paint job on the toe nails! Otherwise I would go with sheer black. Have fun!

No black heels. EIther charcoal gray or a shade of silver. No stockings, especially if you are wearing a long skirt. Dark green and black is too dark for this occasion.

I would go with panty hose that closely matches your skin tone. This way if you do get a run it won't be as noticable. I would also get 2 pair and keep the extra pair in your purse or glove box in the car.

I am baffled by this issue as well.

Everyone tells me that for dressy events, I can absolutely not wear stockings of any kind (particularly nude stockings-- OMG they would be torn off of me by my more fashion current friends) Bare legs they say are a must! (of course I do live in California)

If your legs don't show because you're wearing a long skirt -- I would go with bare (unless you're freezing -- then I don't know what to suggest).

But if they do show -- I'm stumped (except nude color seems to be a no no in my circles as well) I personally think my legs look terrible without a stocking of some kind -- so would love to get some additional input from the gals out there . (I've been told "Well put some makeup on your legs to smooth out the look"! But it doesn't do enough!)

For daytime business =- is dark opaque ok? Or what? I'm completely clueless What's a gal to do who doesn't want to flaunt skin?

The no-stocking look has been going for a couple of years now. If you watch "What Not to Wear" you have seen and heard about it.

This has stumped me, too. Some women do not need to wear hosiery for their legs to look good. Many of the rest of us need an extra boost for our legs. At my age, my bare legs are definitely not a treat for anyone to see, and they do not add sophistication to any outfit!

You could experiment. Since you're wearing a long skirt and black heels, buy a pair of lightweight (!) black opaques, and another pair just as sheer and as close to your own leg color as you can find, whether it's called nude or not. Try them both on with your whole outfit and see what looks best.

Then go with that choice, and keep breathing.

I don't know how this bare-legs trend started, but when I was younger lots of women wore hosiery in that suntan shade, even though it was far from the right shade for them. Their legs didn't look tanned (especially when the rest of their bodies weren't); they looked awkward. Maybe this whole thing is a reaction to that orangey color. But I'll be glad when the trend has gone!

Sorry for the risque looking photo poses but I did a search for black striped stockings so you could see what I was talking about. If your going to make a fashion statement I would go with something black with a pattern. If your wanting to look more classic and eleganat I would go with sheer ... personaly i would pick nude. Think Sex and the City's character Charolett would wear something classic and lady like. Cari's character would have worn something with a bold color...like yellow or even tone it down with just the black pattern.

I truly had the thought that " I totally do not understand todays fashion. Nothing matches...floral print skirt with lepord shoes?? " So I am warning you I am not the best to seek this advice from.

Just did a google image search for "fashion green dress with stockings " looks like skin tones or blacks...some bold purple/blue too. look at those and choose what you would be most happy with. fashion is a lot about feeling good and confident with yourself and your own style. - also dont go too crazy and take away from the bride and her day. Have fun!

No, nude is NOT a no-no! Nude/suntan/taupe - whichever most closely resembles your own skin tone is always best. That being said, it will probably be chilly in VT so I think you could get away with a sheer black - but ONLY if you're wearing black shoes. Opaque is definitely a no-no! Enjoy the wedding!

I haven't worn pantyhose in a long, long time. Is this a dressy outfit (like silk or taffeta) or more like a suit (wool, poly)? I still don't know what I would say, but it might make a difference in answers. I'm leaning toward sheer if anything at all. I always go bare-legged.

i also heard over the summer (when it did make some sense) that hose are out, bare legs are in...but...um in october in vt?? that just seems ridiculous to me. go with the weather, if it's warm enough and you're comfortable, by all means go bare legged. whatever you feel is appropriate...although i never liked the look of dark black tights with black heels...that's just me. maybe lighter black or gray. but i am no expert lol. (says the woman who feels it's silly to go out bare legged in vt in october...hehe!)

you can blame this one on the florida thing...i lived there recently for about 5 years (came back a couple years ago) and NO ONE wears anything on their legs. because it never gets cold enough! it was hard for me to get back into the cold weather groove as well.

The weather in VT might be cold. Formal, then sheer. The general rule is to usually match the stockings to the shoe, especially if it's a covered toe. Any department store, hosiery depatment has samples for you to see the actual cast how sheer the stockings are. I love donna Karan brand, they are very sheer you can barely see the color. Have fun at the wedding. If you have any additional questions, please pm me.

Few extra tips, pack a clear nail polish just in case you have a run.
Donna Karan control top is a great smoothing panel, so if the stockings are ruined cut them of and keep the control top pc.

If you decide on bare legs, bring a small container of baby powder. I hardly ever wear panty hose and always put baby powder in my shoes first - it absorbs sweat and odor and also allows your feet to slide in (as if you are wearing hose). I sprinkle in a bunch, shake it around to cover everywhere and dump out the extra. Sometimes I have to wipe a bit of white off the edges once I have the shoes on.
I would NEVER wear black hose, I don't think they look good on anyone and remind me of old Italian aunties. I would always go with something that matches skin tone. And indeed, bring multiple pairs since they snag easily. I have a friend who bought a smooth simple garter belt and buy fancy stockings and feel super sexy wearing these. You simply put a short panty over the stockings and garter so you can go to the bathroom easily.

From my observation of women and hosiery anything goes. Most often I see bare legs much to my surprise.

Since you are going to Vermont I'd say the fashionista's would be wearing Fall and cooler weather clothes. If you are wearing a skirt and some of your leg shows then wear a stocking that is a little darker than nude. A lot of people don't wear them anymore but to a formal affair I would notice if someone neglected to put them on. A mid tone would blend in and not be noticeable like nude, which is often a bit lighter then skin and is therefore very obvious.

With a dark green I would not choose to wear black due to it being such a contrast. Then skin color would blend in well and not stand out. You can always wait until you get there and see how others in the community dress, say at the mall or in a nicer store that caters to others than the young adult/older teen. If they are all in shorts and tanks due to Indian Summer then you may need to rethink the dark color and go bare legged.

Always match you shoes (sheer black in this case) or your skin tone. Taupe might be nice with green.....

Are your shoes open toed? If not and you want bare legs, get those little peds that don't show at all but will feel better than barefeet in your shoes.

I'd go with a color that closely matches your skin tone. It will give the illusion of not wearing "hose" along with the reality that you do have class. "Hose" does make your legs look better -- check out Princess Katherine... she wears hose and her legs look terrific! That said, you are going to VT -- it's cold. You'll be very glad you've got something - even if it's sheer - covering your legs.
