My 5 year old daughter is having her tonsils and adnoids removed in less than a month. I just want to hear about your child's experiences so I can prepare myself and my daughter. Any complications? What foods should I buy? Any after effects? Did it help?...
Thanks in advance :)

What can I do next?

Ha LOL !! My daughter just had this done on the 10th of Oct and she is also 5. We bought a TON of Popciclyes and yogurt and puddings anything that is soft and not hot!! Stay away from HOT things have plenty of Ibprofin avail. She will probably be sent home with a Rx for Tylenol w codine This was very important the first 48 hours, thats all I gave her, also if you need a refill or find that the Ibprofin isnt doing it dont be afraid to ask your dr for a refill!! I had three refills because she was in a lot of pain and the regular Ibprofin wasnt doing it for her. All she did for the first week was lay around, no running no jumping or any type of fast moving for 3 weeks, that could possible burst open the the coderized blood vessels in their throat and could cause you to take her back in to have them redone/closed up!! No good!! My daughter was back to school within 2 weeks but under restrictions as far as playtime/ recess / gym class went. If you have any other questions email me at ____@____.com I would be happy to help!! Good luck

My son was 2 when he had his surgery. I did the same thing as Amy as far as the food and giving the tylenol/codiene as directed for the first 2-3 days (even if he wasn't in pain). I was expecting him to be in a lot of pain for at least a week or two, but after the first couple of days, he was back to his old self only better.

My 4 year old had his tonsils/adenoids removed a few months ago and I will warn you that day 4-5 may be worse for your child. The pain is usually worse due to scabbing, etc. Just stay on the pain meds or rotate tylenol and pain med throughout the day. After a week or 2 you'll have your energetic child back:)

Both my children had very good experiences with tonsils & adenoid removal. We went to Children's West. Wonderful staff! Only downfall was that they kick you out quickly. My son was vomiting all the way home, which was 45 minute drive. Bring a favorite toy, doll, etc. along for your child.
They will need to drink lots of liquids and eat soft food. Yogurt, jello, gogurts, ice cream, popcicles, juice, and soup. Good luck!

Both of my kids had their adnoids removed, my daughter was 4 at the time and my son was 11. They did just fine! Just be prepared on what to expect and make sure you talk to your daugher about what to expect, I found that very important to my daughter. Just do the soft foods, popcicles, and the medicine and she should be just fine and better then ever!

Hello J.,

My son just had his tonsils and adnoids out in March. It was necessary due to his apnea. I am glad that your daughter is a little older and can understand the importance of drinking. My son did not and had to be put back into the hospital for rehydration. It was not a lot of fun but I think it was due to his age as he is only three. I would say it was a good week before he was back to his old self. Good luck to you!
