Has Anyone Else Had a Diagnosis of a Choroid Plexus Cyst?

I had my 20 week sonogram to check on the baby and was told there was cyst on the baby's brain. My OB said that she will give me another sonogram at 24 weeks to see if the cyst is gone (she said they are usually gone by the 24th week). She didn't seem very concerned while I am freaking out. I have done some research over the internet into it and it usually doesn't turn out to be a problem. So, I am just wondering if anyone else has had this diagnosis or knows someone who has. I am very scared for my baby but am praying that everything will be okay.

What can I do next?

I'm a 29-year-old woman with a large cyst on my brain (approx. 3cm x 7cm). I never even knew I had it until I had a CAT scan following a car accident about 10 years ago. The doctors told me it was congenital and I had no reason to worry. And they were right. I haven't had any problems and would have never known it was there if I hadn't gotten a CAT scan. Don't worry about it.

I had a few when I was pg with my youngest - it freaked me out! CPS are usually harmless, whether or not they *resolve* before birth, but they are correlated with an increased risk of Trisomy 19 (not Down Syndrome, but similar). Trisomy 19 is a really horrible disease but it is very rare. For my age (36), normal risk is 1 in 1000; risk with a CPS was about 1 in 120. So I chose to have an amnio and know for sure. The risk of an amnio causing problems with an experienced neonatologist is about 1 in 700. We did it right then and there when I had my u/s.

Needless to say, my amnio came back 100% fine, and my son was born happy and healthy at 38 wks. Also because I had the amnio, I didn't do any other screening - including the echocardiogram that they like to do in moms over 35. I have no regrets for having the amnio. I don't know what I would have done had we found out he had Trisomy 19, but I always feel that the more info the better.

Hope this helps! Please don't freak out. You should talk to your doctor about the risks of a chromosomal defect for your age with the CPS, and also the corresponding risks of an amnio. I am the sort of person that would have freaked out not knowing, and the two weeks between my amnio and the results were awful. Also we never told a soul b/c I didn't want people looking at my son funny wondering if he was 100%. By the way, he is now 9 mo old, crawling, climbing and standing, says 4 words, and our ped says he is very developmentally advanced.

I worked in the OB/GYN field for 8 years. A choroid plexus cyst is very, very common. I would venture to say that 1 in 10 of our patients found out their unborn child had the cyst. In my eight years at the same practice, I NEVER saw the cyst turn into something dangerous. I know it's hard not to worry but trust your doctor to give you accurate information.

I know exactly how you feel. When I was pregnant with my daughter, noe 3 1/2, I was told at about 28 weeks that there was a cyst on her brain! I immidiatley freaked out! I was so nervous & scared that my blood pressure ended up getting HIGH! I remember not being able to sleep at nights and I think I prayed every single day, every hour. It turned out that my OB had to send me to a perinatologist to do another ultrasound! They did not see the cyst on the baby's brain. They sent me for another ultra sound and nothing was found again! My advice to you is don't worry, as hard as I know that is! Keep praying and just follow your OB's insrtuctions.

My sister-in-law had that during her last pregnancy as well. They said not to worry about it and they would re-check (of course...naturally you're going to worry though). When they re-checked her 4 weeks later, they said it was gone also. So, try not to worry to much until your next sonogram. I hope everything turns out ok!

Yes! I was 37 when I got pregnant with my last child and 38 when I delivered him. Because of my age, I had many, many ultrasounds with a maternal fetal specialist. My son had the Chorioid Plexus Cyst. I don't remember exactly at what point it was gone but it did progressively close and my son was and is a very healthy boy. Thank God! I also had an amnio done and the fluid that was removed was a brown color and my doctor said it didn't look good because it is usually clear or yellow. But again, when the test on the amniotic fluid was performed, everything came back perfect. So she had scared me to death for nothing just because she had never seen brown fluid before which came out to be perfectly fine. Sometimes I think we have to know a little bit too much information in something that should be so natural and wonderful. I hope it all works out for you J..

My daughter had the same thing. Her cyst was 6mm and was gone by the time I had the next ultra sound. My doc sent me to a place that specialized in reading ultra sounds and he said everything was fine. She was born perfect and she is so alert...so trust your doc.

My friend just had a baby last thanksgiving, during her pregnancy her doctor told her the same thing! She was scared and was worried about her baby but the more people that she talked to had heard of someone that they knew with the same problem. her baby is healthy and happy and the cyst dissappeared before she was born.

Yes, it's common. and common as well for it to go away on it's own. They told me my daughter had 2 cysts-one on each side of her brain-and they would check 3 weeks later. They were gone. I think with medical advances today, they can see so much more, and i really feel like it's a part of normal growth in most fetus'. Please don't worry. They always tell you the worst case scenario, but in this case, trust them when they are not worried. It IS common. Don't stress!!!

No I did not, but a close friend of mine did. And just as your doctor wants to check if it is gone in a few weeks, her doctor did the same thing. And it was gone.

Try not to worry too much.

This is actually a pretty common finding and usually resolves without any issue. It can be one of the signs of Down's syndrome which is why your doctor wants to follow up. Your age and other factors put you and your baby at very low risk for this issue to develop. Take some deep breaths and relax. You and your baby are strong and healthy! : )
