My daughter has an incredible head of can't-comb-through-it curly hair - VERY thick and unmanageable. She's very preteen and we need prfessional help now! Any suggestions for salons out here in the Danville area? Don't know much out here yet!

What can I do next?

Hi P., I have five children as well, close in age to yours. I like to take my kids to Shear Adventures in Danville. Our favorite stylist is Sheila. She is fantastic with all hair types. If your daughter wouldn't object to a children's only salon I would definitely take her there. Sheila has a tween and teenage boys of her own. She is up with what is trendy for that set. My hairstylist is in San Leandro. She is great, but that might be farther than you want to go. Plus, if your on a bit of a budget they only charge $12.95 for a haircut at American Hair in San Leandro (its right off Washington). My stylist's name is Ann, she is co owner with her husband, she's excellent, don't let the price fool you. Good luck with your move.

Dear P.: Hi. I too have dealt with my wildly curly hair all of my life. I have a great hair stylist that does a wonderful job on my "fro":) The only problem might be that he's all the way out in Antioch. The place is called Whispers Studio and I see the owner. His name is Richard and is a super sweet and fun guy. The other suggestion that you might really want to try is a flat iron along with some products specifically designed to help straighten curly hair while styling. I've tried almost every product out on the market and I can honestly say that they all seem to work equally well. I would definitely say to try one of the less expensive ones to begin with. I would not suggest the same for the flat iron, however. You can actually get pretty inexpensive ones that seem to do a great job, but if they don't have ceramic plates they will eventually wind up FRYING your babies hair :( Try going to a beauty supply store and checking out the different ones and try asking the employees what they suggest. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars but DO make sure that the one you get has ceramics plates and can heat up to at least three hundred and fifty degrees. You'll probably be her "stylist" for a while but before you know it, she'll be an expert at doing her own hair in no time! Good luck and have much fun!!!

Catalina at Victoria Salon in Pleasanton is really good, a little expensive and a total perfectionist, but really worth it,
especially at that age!

Hi P., I work at Di Pietro Todd in S.F. and have lots of experience with hair like ypur daughters. I know the location is a challenge; but we will be opening up a salon in walnut creek. The plan is for us to open in October. So you would only have to travel to the city once.I would be happy to consult with you and give advice over the phone. I think it is important for young girls who are struggling with their hair to get the help they need so they don't grow up hating their hair. Just contact me if you are interested. Good Luck, D.

I too have incredibly thick, curly hair and when I lived in Walnut Creek, I would drive down to Danville to Jerol Salon on Hartz Ave. I used to see Sandy there. Now, I see Dana in Concord at The Mane Gallery. I think Dana listens a little better, and is more talkative and friendly. Sandy seemed a little more formal to me, but both do a good job. I've had Dana do the whole straightening thing for me, and LOVED the way my hair turned out.
