My 2-year-old's hair is rather long, and when I leave it down it get's really frizzy and sticks out everywhere. I've been pulling it back every day, but it's starting to break off and get damaged from being pulled tight, and if I leave it loose it just falls out of the hairband. Does anybody know of any products I can use that will keep her hair from getting huge when I leave it down? She has wavy hair (I have super thick curly hair, and she got my frizz but not much of my curl!!!!) I don't want to use regular gel on her hair, because I just don't think a child should have a bunch of crunchy products weighing her hair down. Any ideas would be appreciated1!!!!

What can I do next?

I'd suggest consulting a local hair dresser/stylist.. A friend of mine had the same problem and a stylist was able to "layer" it so that it was easier to "tame".

Hi S.,
I know exactly how you feel about kids hair as well as those products out there that might harm her. Some, if not all, use formaldhyde in their products, even Johnson & Johnson. I would use only "Natural" products on her as well as yourself. Maybe a good deep conditioner that you let stay on for like 45 minutes or an hour while wrapped in plastic, then wash out and rewash with a "Natural" shampoo and leave in conditioner.
Health Food Stores are an excellent place to start for those products. And, not to plug my business, but I am connected to a place that has "Natural" products for kids, adults and pets, as well as cleaning products for your house to help keep everyone healthy. If you would like more info, just send me a message and I would love to share it with you.
Peace & Blessings,
M.

I do not know of any specficly for kids and curls, but I use Garner fruitesse this is great stuff....if you want to go salon then Biologe (sp?) is even better for long curlie hair. However being your kiddo is two and prolly gonna get soap in his eyes ( our five year old still hate washing his hair). Then maybe go with a product for styling....myself have natural curlie hair have been through a millon products the BEST product I have found so far is from .... CHI - Silk Infusion, it sells for 18.00 small bottle and the lg is 32.00. You use just a very small amount while hair is dry running fingers over hair when wet, after it drys some might need to reapply a little more. I know it sounds kind of spendie but I bought the large bottle and it has lasted better part of six months.

also my soon to be 3 year old has curlie hair like mine though not long he also uses this product in his hair.

Mousse. The hair doesn't get crunchy like hair gel, but will control it the same way.

I would try a leave-in conditioner, braiding her hair (without securing it with a band) at night before bed, and using a de-tangler. De-tanglers work wonders on my kiddos, and they make them especially for kids!

I condition my DD super curly hair and use spray gel if we are going out. I just put a little on hand and work it in. If we are out and her hair is really mess which is alll the time I will just some lotion not a lot and very little actually and smooth it down. I also let her hair down at home. Get her a silk pillow case too it keeps her from getting her hair in tangles and really messy. I have also bought my DD some hairbands that have like a handkerchief like thing. I found some at the disney store for like $1 the other day. Aslo don;t use rubber bands or those with metal. Use scrunchies or ribbons instead.
Hope some of this helps...

Hi,

My hair became very wavy after having my daughter. I am used to very straight hair, so I tried Sunsilk shampoo and, to my amazement, it really works. They have an anti-poof and an anti-curl - I think it's called anti-curl - you'll recognize it. The anti-curl works best. It doesn't totally take out all of the wave, but helps. Having said all of that, it is adult shampoo, so you would have to be careful not to get it in her eyes.

I hope that helps,

M.

Stop by the local health food store and get a pump bottle of 100% aloe vera gel. Just a squirt after you towel dry but before you brush will help and it's not sticky or gooey. After about a week, you'll notice how much softer and more managable her hair is even without the aloe. When it's dry, you can rub some on your finger tips before braiding or pulling her hair back and it will help catch the "fly aways". There are a million products on the market, but this simple (natural) gel works better and without any petroleum or harsh chemicals. Good luck!

PS - double bonus - aloe is great for sun burns, bug bites, rashes and chapped skin :)

My neighbor, who is also my hair dresser gave me something called silk fusion, or something like that. It comes in a gray bottle with a red top. My daughter has super curly ringlet hair like Shirley Temple. This product works great. It makes her hair soft, shiny and there is no frizz at all. People have actually commented on how nice her hair looks. You can get it at salons, it's not for kids but for adults, so you can use it on your hair too. You only need a pea sized amount to rub in her hair. I ran out a few weeks ago and have been using kids detangler, it works, but isn't as nice.

There is a new baby shampoo with conditioner made specifically for curly/wavy hair, it works wonderful on my nephews hair. I think it's made by Johnson and Johnson.

have you tried anything for african-american hair? my kids are biracial (i'm black, husband is white) and my kids both have super-curly hair. my son's hair is thicker and coarser than my daughter's and i have to condition it every day. i never ever use gel or anything like that. i use coconut oil most nights on him, right after bathtime when his hair is wet. sometimes i use soft 'n' pretty creme conditioner if his hair is really frizzy. on my daughter i just use a little coconut oil at night and it is easy to brush in the mornings. i shampoo their hair with loreal kids--there are different types and i use the one for curly hair. it is wonderful, their hair is easy to comb when wet, no tangles, soft & shiny. great stuff. good luck!

Hello my name is angela and i am a hairdresser i am not sure if your still needing some advice but there are a few thangs i suggest first is with ponytails make sure there is no metal on them and not just rubber ethier it should help with the breakage. Also finding a good taming shampoo and cond. will help even if its not for kids also i dont recomend layers for so young just keep it nice and trimed every 6 to 8 weeks and that also helps a lot. Also there is a product called biosilk can be used for the hole fam and you dont need much at all and can be used for wet or dry hair but if you have anymore ?s please e-mail me and i can make some more sugestions.

Try some mouss. It's light weight and won't weigh her hair down. A friend of mine is a hairdresser and she suggested this to me. You can dry it or let it air dry. Also, try to use those coated bands that won't pull hair. I had a few bangs cut on my daughter because she won't always wear a pony-tail or clip. I hated her hair always hanging over her eyes.

Hello Sahm, I suggest using baby oil, just a very small amount of baby oil will keep the body in her hair but tone down the frizz. You can also try johnson johnson baby lotion this will also tone down the frizz in her hair. Hope this helps you.

I am not sure about the frizz but I do have something that will help strengthen her hair so it won't break so easily. I and my 6 yr old daughter have been using Revlon Synaplex Complex 2 in 1 leave in conditioner. It has really kept our hair in great shape. It is a hair detangler and conditioner. I can only find it online.

I use Thermasilk Mouse which doesn't weigh your hair down but you will probably have to dry it w/a diffuser to keep it from frizzing.

Good Luck....if you want to try the Revlon, email me and I will find the website for you.

My daughter's hair is the same way! We use a foam that we picked up at the Toys R Us hair salon. The foam is lightweight, and doesn't leave it crunchy. It takes the frizz out and holds it out of her face. I love it!

Mix water and regular conditioner half and half, apply and comb through while her hair is wet. You can braid it or leave it down. You'll have to wash it every other day, but it works.
