First Time Tampon User

My daughter was caught in a tight spot in school during her last mentrual cycle where she had to use a tampon for the first time. She is still a virgin and did not know how to properly insert the tampon. She suffered through the day with the tampon until she was able to get home and change to a pad. She is now experiencing minor itching and irratability. We both think it may be from the tampon. I don't use tampons either, so I can't be too sure. Has anyone ever experienced this type of problem? I'm afraid to take her to a Gyne for fear of her being hurt from the tools. Can anyone offer help or suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your responses to my inquiry. They were all very helpful but we tried using the vaseline as Ellen P suggested. It worked. I also think the irritation may have come from her using body sprays. I suggested she stop spraying her under clothes and use the vaseline and the irritation went away. I'd also like to thank each of you for your assurance on the OB Gyn visit. When it's time, I will encourage her to relax and also keep those thoughts in mind for myself as well.

Yes, it very well can be from a tampon, especially if it was the first time she ever used one. She needs to practice using one when it is not her period. She was probably tensed-up and anxious to get it inserted correctly and it probably wasn't inserted properly.

When she DOESN'T have her period, have her practice. She'll go through a few for practice. The insert will give her a picture of how to insert it. She can use a little lubricant (when practicing) if she is dry. If it is inserted properly, she will not feel it at all. Kotex (purple package - I think is the regular) is really easy to use for a young girl.

As far as going to the Gyne - different issue. Are you thinking that she needs to go for this issue? Using a little lubricant will make the irritation go away - even using a little vaseline for a day or two. As far as tools at the dr., just the act itself of the exam may be a bit embarrassing for her but I don't think there should be any cause for concern about the dr. using the tools. Sometimes there is a little spotting after the exam and the more relaxed she can be, the easier the exam. Any good dr. will be thoughtful to a nervous patient and help them relax - perhaps a female gyne, for her first visit, may be preferable. Good luck.

take her to the ob gyn. It could be non tampon related, but even if she is a virgin she should still have a checkup everyear once she has started her cycle. If she inserted one wrong or used a to big tampon she could of increased infection risk.

Ok. This is funny now but it wasn't then. When I was younger I tried to use a tampon while my mother was asleep. Like your daughter I was a virgin and did not know what I was doing. I was miserable for weeks afterwards. Later I found that there was a small piece of cotton from the tampon lodged under my clitoris. once I removed it all of my irritation ended. I hope that your daughters problem is as simple as mine was. Needless to say, I don't use tampons either. Good luck to you.

I read all your advice that you have rec'd and agree with most everyones advice.
Take her to the OB/GYN it is so important these days for her to be seen as early as possible. Talk to your daughter and see what she would be more comfortable w/a male or female doctor.
I'm currently in a medical class right now and just got done learning all about the female reproductive system and it would not hurt for her to just be seen. As far as the irritation is concerned thats all it may be for right now but it's not worth not paying attention to something that could be more serious in the long run. Good luck and another piece of advice if your not sure of a good doctor post another question on here with some advice for a doctor. I live in the Oak Lawn area and have a wonderful very patient doctor that I have already recommended 6 girls to and we all love him.

Best of luck to you and your daughter.

If she is 14, she does not need to have a gynecological visit UNLESS the itching/irritability persists. Typically girls do not need to visit a gyn until they turn 18 or at the onset/prior to sexual intercourse (standard recommendation of the ACOG - American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology). At the same time, the 'tools' the gyn uses will not damage her. Yes, she might be uncomfortable at the thought of visiting the gyn but who wasn't their first time? Women often hype it up to be worse than it really is, and that increases the anxiety during the visit. Increased anxiety leads to muscle tension which makes it difficult to do the exam.

Just have her keep you posted on her symptoms. If they persist then yes, you should take her to see a doctor. Don't hold off just because you're afraid she'll be hurt. If she has some sort of vaginal infection, she needs to have it seen and treated by a professional.

Once you get your period, you should be going to the gyne no matter what your age or if you are a virgin. The tools will not hurt her. Find a doctor that you are comfortable with telling that this is her first time to the doc and about the tampon and about the symptoms she is having. Rather than having the symptoms escalate into something worse by not taking her, you should take her. The first time I went I was 15 and we did tell the doc all of the above and she was very very careful and very understanding.
