Hi to all my fellow moms out there. I am in need of some assistance. My A/C has just stopped cooling. It still is working cause it turns on and and I feel the air come through the vents, but there is no cold air coming through. Another thing is that the outside unit fan is not spinning, but I can hear it click like it wants to turn on. Does anyone have any idea what it can be or suggest a company and/or tech friend that they may know that can help me out? Our house is about 4 years old and I live in the Pearland/Manvel area. Very close to Shadow Creek Ranch. I would appreacite any feedback. Thank you!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies!!! You saved me from stress and worries. Yes, the house is 4 years old, but we bought it from the first owner. I had not thought about a warranty, since it was not part of the negotiation when we bought the house. I called the builder and sure enough the A/C is still under warranty. I was so excited and my nerves from the amount of money we may have had to dish out has gone away. Thank you for the advice!!!

FYI to everyone, Freon does not just evaporate. If somebody comes and tells you that you need freon, ask them to find the leak. Any thing refrigerated has a sealed system and freon can only escape if there is a hole somewhere in the system. If somebody comes and "zaps" your a/c, refrigerator, freezer, etc. with refrigerant, they are not as competent as you think, the freon is leaking out from somewhere. Don't get ripped off, by people who don't know the whole science involved, there are many a/c companies with inexperienced technicians.

I hope you got this taken care of already, but we use a company called Weeks. (www.weeks-service.com). They are based in League City but always make it to our place in Pearland in a reasonable amount of time (same day). I also highly recommend buying their service plan - they come out twice a year to check your heat/AC and you get top priority on service calls (they were at our place within the hour once when our AC went out) and a discount. I don't work for them or anything, but we've always been very impressed. They never try to sell us anything unnecessarily and are always very helpful in ways to save money on electricity, etc. And they never creep me out when I'm here by myself and they come to do their work. I hope this helps - a neighbor of ours went with someone else and she spent like $15,000 on a new AC unit that broke within the month! Yikes! Nothing worse than having your AC go out in Houston!

Sounds like you just need freon. Don't know how to spell it but it is what makes the air cool in your car too.
Good luck.

I would concur with the freon. We have to get ours rezapped every year. One easy way to tell that you need freon is the lovely layer of ice around the connection from the a/c unit going into the house. :) I've heard good things about Weeks, and then with our AHS insurance, Brown A/C came out and they were really nice.

The repair man said that a/c units lose about a pound to a pound and a half of freon a year, so maybe make a note to have someone come out every year to check it and refill so that way you don't have it go out in July... or during hurricane season.. (happened to us when we had to evac for Rita - so fun)

If you mean your home was just built 4 years ago, I would contact your home builder and get THEM to mandate the fixing of the air conditioner. It should most certainly NOT go out within four years. It's probably nothing big - freon or something - but you shouldn't have to pay to fix something that was supposed to be brand new.

Hi, M.,

I wouldn't let anyone but Weeks Co. out of Leagaue City touch my A/C. We've been doing business with them for about 20 years, one A/C unit and one furnace. Honest capable people.
Best of luck,
M.

Sounds like a freon problem. Just call any A/C company and the can fix it for about $50 plus whatever they charge to come out to your house.

Hi M.,

Here are some things you or your spouse may want to check:

1. Check the breaker box and make sure the A/C breaker is lined up properly;
2. Check the outside unit to ensure ice is not around the unit, if so, it needs to be cleaned; or
3. The freon level in the unit may be low which is why it is not cooling.

I was referred to this guy and I always contact him with regards to problems with my A/C (similar to the one you described. The company is Maintenance Unlimited. Contact - Jessie Carrington, ###-###-#### or ###-###-####.

Good luck!

Hi there,

It sounds like you ned frion gas. You can call Weeks airconditioning service. we have used them for 4 year and they are great. Just don't fall fo rthe scam that most a/c companies are trying to do... you probably do not need a new coil...

hope this helps
