Could It Be a Hernia?

We just noticed a bump between the scrotum and anus when we changed my 7 month old son's diaper this morning. No fever or redness, but a noticable lump on his left side...feels harder than right side. I will take him to dr. on Monday, of course, but wondering if anyone has experience with this type of thing -- could it be a hernia?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Swollen area turned into more of a targeted bump than a whole swollen area. Went to dr. and it's most likely either staph or strep - they did a culture but it's not leaking, so we may not know. Little guy has to go on antibiotics - I'm bummed about that but it could fester & spread. (yuck!) Thanks, everyone, for your help!

Glad you're going tot he Dr. My daughter had one that did not "correct itself" so had a hernia op. just before she was 3. With boys it may be different because of the genital area. Bless you and your baby boy! (Ps. Surgery was outpatient -- in @ 5AM and out by 10AM -- with no complications).

Could very well be. Have both of his testicles descended? You can gently check each side of the scrotal sack to see if each testicle is indeed there.

Possible. Also possible it's his testes, or a BM. Or a cyst, or a few other things.

Good call on the Dr. :) If you get very worried, remember...the nurse advice line at your local hosp is "open" 24/7.

They can also tell u if it's something to treat at home, wait for an appointment, or run to the ER. My son actually presented the classic symptoms for a twisted testicle, which we found out 8pm friday of a 3 day weekend. The nurse advice line sent us to the ER...and BOY I have never never been seen faster. "Stat! A baby boy with something wrong to his balls!" Talk about USHERED through the male staffed ER. <laughing> Turned out to be a highly virulent infection, NOT a twisted testicle. It theoretically COULD have waited 3 days. But apparently while day one was numb, after that it would have been screaming pain. So we got the piece of mind, and my son got out of the pain. Whew!Close one!

I have not experienced that, but I'd think Hemroid before hernia,...? Good luck with that ,....I hope you little one is okay.

When our now 39 year old son was 20 months old we noticed the same thing. It did turn out to be a hernia. He had surgery and it corrected it. However, when our now 30 year old son was a toddler, I noticed the same thing. It turned out to be a swollem lymph node. This was much more simple. It was caused by having had a cold or infection. We just had to wait for it to subside. Good luck with your precious little boy.

Yes it could be a hernia. My son had one as a baby and was operated on. I never even found it- the pediatrician did ( I think it was the 1 year old well child check). No problems after surgery. Best of luck to you and your family.

I'm wondering if it's a lymphnode that is inflamed because of a recent infection - maybe a cold or something. I'm curious too, so if you could send me a message on what the doc confirms. Thanks!
