I have a question and I am quite embarrassed to ask anyone around me. I gave birth to my daughter 11 months ago. I have never breastfed as the hospital in Oregon ruined that for me. She has been formula fed since day 1. Here is my problem. I am lactating again after 9 months of being dry, and also it burns when I go to the bathroom. Is there any connection? Is there any one that knows why? A dr can't even answer it for me.

I would definitely try a different doctor! Just to be sure you don't have a bladder infection starting...it is very painful when you urinate, usually, and this can cause serious problems.

You didn't state if you wanted to try breastfeeding or not. This would be a great opportunity to do so, but I don't know how willing your daughter would be to partake, and she probably has teeth now which could be tricky. If you don't want to be lactating, you can do the usual stop breastfeeding tricks, such as another respondent mentioned.

Good luck!

I'd get a second opinion. But you don't need to be embarrassed. Whether they are separate issues or related, all sorts of changes happen to your body after giving birth that nobody really talks about which makes us feel like there is something unusual going on when they happen to us. But an experienced doctor will have seen and heard of everything.

That's really awesome that you are lactating again. Now you can have the opportunity to breastfeed if you would like to! I recently learned that frequent nipple stimulation is the primary causative factor in lactation. Even a woman who has never given birth can lactate and successfully breastfeed simply by pumping frequently. Hormone changes that occur within the first year postpartum can cause a multitude of symptoms as many have already mentioned. Regardless of whether the two things are related your doctor should be able to suggest or prescribe something that can help ease any discomfort you are having, if he cannot, it would be a good time to seek a second opinion or go to a gynecologist rather than your regular doctor. It typically takes a full year (or longer for some women) to fully recover from carrying and birthing a baby so the fact that your daughter is 11 months old and you are recently having unique symptoms is not strange at all so don't let that worry you. If you decide you would like to breastfeed for a bit or provide your daughter with expressed breast milk in her bottle there are prescription medications that aide in breast milk production as well as natural supplements like Fenugreek. If you do not want to breastfeed at this time then avoid any kind of nipple stimulation, wear a tight bra at all times, and apply cold cabbage leaves to your breasts.

Please go to your doctor you may have a bladder infection.
If you are lactating it may be whatever they gave you to dry up your milk has left your system or you have the hormones that produce milk active again.

Hi M.. My number one question would be is there a chance that you could be pregnant again? May explain the milk production.

As for the pain during urination, I would definitely see a doctor for a possible urinary tract infection (UTI) or bladder infection. Maybe you have already done this in which case I am at a loss to explain the pain.

Good luck to you!

Sounds like it could be a bladder/ uterine infection..maybe thrush? It may simply be a yeast infection. I would eat lots of yogurt (at least one single serving a day, maybe two) and for the "burning when you pee" problem, cranberry juice also works. It might still burn for a few days though. Also Apple Cider vinager is a good one. It is nasty to try to drink, but you can soak in a tub, or use it topically similar to a douche or a sitz bath (I don't recommend a douche with it as it can burn a bit). But soaking in it and actually just having it on your skin can help make it so bacteria cannot live there that cause the infection. If your breasts are itchy or anything, same applies to them. Soak a warm cloth with it and lay it on your breasts. The pores will open up and the apple cidar vinager does its job. (Changes the P.H. Balance of your body somewhat so that the bacteria cannot survive in it.) .You can drink the stuff, but suggest that you add lots of honey, and water it down to two tablespoons per cup of water. It's a sour sour dose but it does work fairly quickly. I have a friend that recommends cranberry pills for this type of thing as well...it does work but you need to take a lot of them and they make you have to go to the bathroom a lot! Those are some natural ways to take care of problems like this. If the burning persists and or if pain occurs in abdomen area, for more than five days definitely go back and get them to check for UTI and kidney infection. They can do a urine test for the infections and the results usually come back the same day. Good luck..feel better!

I would ditto a different doctor :)

LOL...Just think, all that burning while peeing right after giving birth might not have been the watermelon through the mail slot. Oy. :P

It would make sense that they're connected with a ton of reasons ranging from dryness to a yeast infection caused by changing hormones to a UTI (caused from changing hormones or a yeast infection). Course, it could be totally unrelated, but history has taught me that if something FEELS related, it usually is.

I know i've lactated BRIEFLY (we're talking for an hour or two here and there...or whenever I eat edamame beans, go figure), and not had the burning question...but, that's a super brief time frame.

Hope you find a) an answer and b) relief!

I had something similar and my dr. said it was dryness and irritability caused by lack of estrogen when your body produces milk. She then prescribed a topical estrogen cream that cleared it up in a couple weeks. Maybe you should try a different dr.?

My 2 cents...

1) I haven't breastfed for 2 years and 9 months, but I can still express milk! (When I asked my doctor 2 years ago, they tested my hormone levels and determined everything was fine...testing by your OBGYN may be worth peace of mind).

2) I switched to Dove Sensitive Skin soap (I thought I was suffering from yeast infections but the over the counter treatments were not working - OBGYN doctor figured out soap was causing "burning" irritation).

I only have one thing to add, and it wouldn't relate to the lactation ... burning pee can be from too much acidic food intake (I noticed it because of my kids-in-cloth-diapers, but then noticed it also applied to me ... acid pee is just something that was part of mu reality, but now that I've stopped it, what a nice relief!). Orange juice, and all fresh citrus, were our main triggers, and as long as each kid was in diapers, I eliminated those items entirely from our household. Now I occasionally buy oranges ... but really, only rarely.

(I had also read something about that time, about our American diet being too acid, so I think I made quite a number of related changes, in addition to oranges ... but you'd have to Google that ;). I don't remember it anymore, they are all either habit or dumped by now ;).)
