My 19 month old daughter tripped over something and busted her lip open. There is a cut on the inside and the outside. It didnt bleed for long and she seems fine with it. My mom and I decided it doesnt need be be handled at the ER because its not bleeding anymore and I dont think they would do anything for it. My question is what to use to keep it clean? Its awfully swollen and she is letting us put a cold cloth on it now and then. Any suggestions!! Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well we didnt take her to the ER, and her lip healed up naturally. I didnt clean it with anything but cool water and it never got infected. No scar or anything... Im surprised it healed up so fast! Thanks for all your tips!

I wouldn't use peroxide on it... the bottle I have says not to use on children under 2 years of age.. Plus, on a post I made asking what mothers use to clean sores one mother pointed out that it takes the ability to heal away from the skin... I looked it up and it's true.

I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as it shows signs of healing. Now, if in a couple of days it is still 'fresh' looking I would get it checked out... or if it scabs over and that keeps tearing open, then stitches may be in order. Other than that, maybe find some mouthwash that has no alcohol and apply it to the cut with a cotton ball to keep the inside clean, and a bit of neosporin for the outside.

I have had 9 brothers... PLENTY of split lips in our family!!! LOL! The only one that went to the ER was the one who nearly ripped his lip OFF (Long story there...) We have had a few instances of teeth going completely through the lip, and they always healed up just fine.

Been there,,done that,,went to the ER and they did do xrays to make sure her teeth, jaw and neck were fine. They couldnt stitch anything cause it was her lip, but said if it had been under her lip they would have done steri- strips,,long skinny band aid tape to hold the cut together. We were told to mix water with some hydrogen peroxide and l have her sorta pour it on her lip letting it dribble into a bowl several times a day to try and keep it clean. It didnt sting or hurt so I hope your daughter doesnt have pain. Ive used peroxide for cuts on myself and soaked full strength and never had it hurt. It will swell, and might leave a lump. Our daughter still, 25 years later, has a lump in her lower lip and gives her a more full pouty look,,so, shes not too upset about it now..lol

she will be fine.... if the cut isnt bad enough for stitches, then just give it time. please dont use peroxide, thats crazy to put her through that pain. i would just keep it clean with a wash cloth when i wash her face. just watch what she eats, some things will burn it..... also, if the outside cut is far anough from her mouth i would put a little neosporin on it, to help prevent scaring.......

my sweet little boy was coming down the slide at chucky cheese's one day & somehow stumbled around & busted his stinkin' lip! i felt horrible! he was aobut your little girl's age i'm pretty sure. anyway, all i remember doing (just a few months ago, but you know how mommy brain is!) is scooping him up & holding him until he didn't cry anymore. i had blood & tears all over my shoulder, but he wriggled right out of my arms & kept playing. i NEVER even considered taking him to the ER. he was acting fine just like your DD is. i TRIED to put cold on it, he wasn't having it though. i kept it clean & was gentle w/it, but i didn't put neosporin, peroxide, or anything on it. that's such a sensitive area but it seems to heal naturally. i wouldn't do a thing, unless of course it worsens, which sounds like a rarity on here so far. i hope she (you!) feel better soon. happy mamas day! :)

if she has an open would (if the tooth broke through the lip) she NEEDS to be seen even IF the bleeding has stopped...she will NEED to get stitches to get the wound closed....

If it is from the inside on one side and NOT totally through the lip - this is gonna suck and hurt - peroxide on cotton balls to keep it cleaned.

Either way - I would take her to the Urgent Care to ensure her teeth are not loose or damaged and to get the wound stitched up.

Lips heal quite quickly, but warrants stitches if it goes through the vermillion border (edge of the lip) so that you get a good cosmestic look. The inside needs nothing most likely. Cold compresses will definitely help, and let the dentist know...she may have loosened teeth if it was that big an impact.
