Cut on Lip

I fell yesterday and cut both the inside and outside of my lip. The inside hurts and is red and swollen. The outside of my lip has a white scab on it and it keeps having a yellow disharge. Is this normal? It figures that I am meeting everyone in my husbands office tomorrow......sigh.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon. I figured if I wait any longer, I will be in the ER on Thanksgiving! Thanks ladies!!

I would call your family doctor if you can. Have you tried something like Neosporin to help it heal faster? If not, I'd try it. It can even help overnight - great for the meeting tomorrow.

Ouch -- sounds painful! These are actually signs of normal healing, and it's not likely you have an infection (unless the area is bright red and feels appreciably hotter than the surrounding tissue). If the yellow discharge is fairly thick and pasty, it is most likely extracellular matrix proteins, fibrin (for blood clotting), and cellular debris mixed with white cells activated by the clotting/healing process. BUT, if the discharge is more liquid-ish and pustulant looking, or if the yellow color is getting darker and edging toward green, it is possible the wound is infected. Just to be on the safe side, go see a doctor and have it checked out.

In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry. Just pat around it gently with a mild soap, and pat it dry. Try not to disturb the scab. You can apply a topical antibiotic like neosporin or polymyxin to the OUTSIDE injury (do NOT put these in your mouth) if it is low enough on your lip to not get inside your mouth. If not, most mouthwashes are good disinfectants and reasonably bacteriocidal.

The Lysterine is good but not the Peroxide. Also to numb it try Orajel or Anbesol. It is iinfected which is why you are getting puss. Keep the outside of your lips moisturized with cocobutter. It will heal soon but not in time for tomorrows meeting the people. I wish you well though.

Well, if it is really bad see a doctor. Right.
But HYDROGEN PEROXIDE will really make a big difference.

Dilute it first. You can try 50/50 or 80 peroxide/20 h2o.
It will bubble, squeeze the cut to get the yellow discharge out and dissolved (could hurt a bit, but worth it). Just keep adding new peroxide solution.
You can do this as often as you want.
As you know the mouth heals so quickly - you might be able to reduce it to a very small boo boo by tonight.

hydrogen peroxide saved me when I got a splinter under my nail a few months ago - totally took the pain away when it sat in the peroxide solution.

I bit the inside of my lip last week and again peroxide helped a ton!
Good luck - happy holidays!

The yellow discharge, redness and swelling are all signs of infection. Please have the cut seen to as soon as possible. Hope you heal quickly!
